The best suggestion would be to take an existing arena, such as the clawtop arena, and use notepad++ to modify it.  You have to start to learn somewhere, so may as well start at the beginning instead of jumping in near the end and getting all excited/upset because you can't do it.  Most of the veterans on here started off exactly where you are, but they had the time and patience to actually sit down and learn what they were doing.  It takes time to learn how to modify an arena - I've been around a LOT longer than you have (as in, I was a senior member on the original RA2 forums), and I still haven't got it down yet.  But, if you're not willing to be patient and  learn, there's not a lot of people who will bother helping you.

Cool, Duck.  Nice to see people diving in....
Input is appreciated. :)

One of the most difficult tasks is finding 3d studio max 4 or 5. both the legal and illegal routes are now difficult.

Deka hecto kilo mega giga tera femta atta FALSE. Only for the last month 5 persons here from the forum are happy owners of 3DstudioMAX5, because of me. If anybody need it PM me. ATTENTION : It won't run under Vista !!!

BTW, when we speaking now, meanwhile the people that have it are 6 now...
Nary, i dont think you will find it in a torrent from where you can download it. Even if you find one it will not have seeds. I have had mine from a long long time, thats why i have it...

Right I understand that this topic is quite ancient in internet terms but I think it would be best to post here rather than make an entirely new thread for more or less the same subject.

I use 3Ds Max 8 and I'm having a crack at arena editing before I make the full dive into creating an arena from scratch presumably in a similar manner to how components are made. I decided that replacing the saw blades in the Robot Wars with the angle grinder bumpers would be a good start so... I selected the sawblade text in the gmf file and replaced from *Mesh to the space above *BACKFACE_CULL with that of the exported model of the grinder under the display and collision but when I tried compiling the file it resulted in a constant stream of errors and upon loading the arena in the game, it crashed.

So, what Am I doing wrong here and is there a similar method of getting it working in arena? I understand that there is a more visual way of editing arenas as Wham has posted a screenshot of the editing process when he lowered the arena walls but I have no idea what it is and how to use it. Also before it starts sounding like I'm badgering everyone, how do I resize the arenas as I think the RW arena is also far too large to look accurate.

Yep, was able to lower the walls:

I don't know much (well, anything) about arena editing, but I am aware modders do a lot of resizing work in Excel, and I believe those screenshots you posted are just RA2 with the collision meshes on (F12 I think?), so no editing there.
