Aceuplink Survivors....
« on: June 05, 2009, 01:54:48 PM »
Hello everyone,

I was sitting here at my desk remembering back to the days where Aceuplink was the center of the RA2 universe. Allow me to introduce myself to the general population of this forum....

I'm MAD Scientist, former moderator of the AU Forums, builder of the DEEP Blue series, innovator of the Project Trinity glitch, and former RA2 junkie. I stummbled upon this forum in my quest for what became of this terrific game and the former forum-friends that I did battle with years ago. I have since discovered that the rich history of this game has been erased by our dear old friends @ RadioF's forums, whom have edited most open source information on the game and has claimed most of the credit for the progression of the community. The old real evidence of what AU did for this game can still be found in a FAQ @ gamefaq.com (which credits everyone that rightly deserves it).

I do recognize some old names on this board, I'm curious where a couple old friends are though....

I what wondering if anyone knows what became of:
- OMEGA
- MiniDJBeirne
- AW
- TDS
- JFranco
- Be0t

While I am not in the know, those guys are probably gone. Check with someone who hasn't been inactive for 2 years.

'Sup Mad?

Only one on the list I've talked to anywhere near recently was AW. He was at RoboGames last year with Carp and a few bots.

Wow, I checked some of the stuffout, and I'm kinda interested as to how the RFS guys (Now known as GatorAIDS) tried to remove AU from history? You seem nicer than they describe you.
Put this onto your signature if you were part of this crappy fad in '03.

Assuplink was never the center of the RA2 universe. The official forums were.

AceUplink was essentially the Soviet Union during the Stalin era. If you disagreed with somebody like say, TDS (aka DaStompa), you would be banned or have your posts deleted/edited. It was a pretty terrible place.

The one redeeming factor of AU was the Battlebots AI pack. That was truly a piece of art...for its time.

I talk to beot every now and again. Still a very odd fella.
AW pops on aim once in a while but we never talk.
mini posted at RFSHQ a few months back(RFSHQ is now deadish)

Out of all the AU staff I respected mad the most, he was a decent bot creater.  he developed many techniques before we started naming techniques.
Shame that you still have a grudge against  RFS.

GOOSE it's good to see you friend!

I assure you I have no grudge, I did however read some of the former postings on the RSF forums about a year after AU went down in flames, those guys were not fans of myself nor ANY of the staff @ AU. Whatever, it's history now... I didn't come here to start a fight or whatever, to tell you the truth Jeffery's post actually made me giggle a bit. Truth of the matter was that AU actually enforced rules and kept order, something that Justin's forum did not, thus it was a safe haven for anyone that felt "wronged" by AU. Furthermore the only real gripe I had w/ Justin and the funky bunch was when they bombed my cellphone w/ 500+ text messages via AIM to SMS and caused me a hefty phone bill for the month and when I called their fearless leader at his home he nearly pee'd his pants, is that the RFS you are talking about?

It's funny to me that no1 else really had as much hatred towards AU as them... and all of a sudden after AU was gone after due to numerous back-end attacks diverting traffic to his site (cause there was no other place to go) by RFS goons...

Quote
Using his notoriety, website traffic was successfully diverted to RFSHQ. In the early months of the website's development, articles were written that highlighted "frauds" done by AceUplink staff members. When the community began to pick up, Radio F Software hired a staff comprised entirely of previously banned or disgruntled AceUplink users and began to abuse loopholes in AceUplink's administration system to cause trouble. In 2005 AceUplink tanked, not because of the quiet attacks from RFSHQ, but because of a hosting contract expiration. Because of its size, RFSHQ kept afloat by assimilating smaller websites on the verge of closing. One such site was Robot Arena Reborn which hosted a database full of every modification to date for Robot Arena 2. Once the files traded hands this database became the main attraction of RFSHQ.

Directly from Wikipedia.
and then they seized and compiled all the faqs/resources and started to be posted around the web after they were conveniently edited to exclude AU mod/member names. One of the last surviving un-touched faq is at gamefaq, take a look for yourselves.... http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/589525.html

....but I digress.

I really wanted to see where this game was in this day and age, how far the designs have progressed and maybe link up w/ some old friends.

More importantly I'm in the process of recovering my old HD and releasing everything I've built and skinned. Stay tuned maybe it'll be ready this weekend

Wow man, those are sweeeeet. It's funny I never stacked or any of that non-sense, I was so anal about my designs I always skinned openings in the body so I wouldn't have random weapons jutting out... hahah

Hopefully I can finally get DEEP BLUE out to the public.

Well howdy doody, looks like you're still alive and kicking - and **** you too buddy. :) It's not MY fault that I took it upon myself to collaborate with some incredibly intelligent and like-minded modders of the game to lay down a format to build upon the game in numerous ways. Myself and my "cronies" created AI expansions that, at the time, revolutionized the Robot Arena 2 modding community.

AceUplink managed to make a BattleBots AI pack (extremely well modded I give you that much, it was beautiful) that ranked up there with "nice to look at but goddamn impossible". What did AU do for the community, really? You all released some modifications but nothing that really gave way to build upon things in the way that myself, Disturbed, Goose, and Starcore decided to take further. In fact, in an ironic kind of way, you led us all together. You can claim a piece of that credit for yourself because without AceUplink there probably would not have been any RFS AI Pack, Starcore AI Pack, or even the DSL mod to blow the game wide open.

If it gives you any solace, Radio F (which began in 1995) disbanded in 2008. I retired from RFSHQ in June of that year to pursue my life where I left off when I hopped on the RA2 bandwagon. I have gone back to being a furry/scaly writer and artist and found a special Mrs. RFS to share the happiness with. I've also ditched the "Radio F Software" moniker and I go by "Dracophile" now - a username that took me 7 years to replace the "temporary" RFS with, but one that personally fits me a lot better. You have full permission to laugh at me if you will because I know I deserve it, but I've done a ****ton of growing up since AceUplink. I rubbed a lot of sh** in your collective faces for no real reason and I am most likely wholly responsible for completely ****ing your website up in every way imaginable. I realize it got to the point where registration was basically blocked off because I had about 3 new accounts a week that went under the radar.

Yes, I did start RFSHQ to completely and absolutely ruin AceUplink. I was out to "do better than you", and that's exactly why we opened on February 12th, 2004 - your domain's "roll over" date (we became the comedy site on May 9th, 2004). When the site opened I was looking to hoard everyone who was banned or disgruntled with AceUplink so that we could build a community that would out-class yours. A little while into the RFSHQ timeline I realized that this was pretty ****ing stupid and I stopped. RFSHQ was an experiment, a joke, and some strange project that took on a life of its own and perpetuated itself on a conglomeration of mostly negative things. The proof is in the pudding, RFSHQ tried way too hard to be like Something Awful and it pretty much blew apart. I created the website with hate in mind and when I wanted to make something out of it I was always reminded of the ill-intent that made the place.

Things could have probably ended a heck of a lot better, but from the beginning I kind of felt like I wasn't wanted there in the first place once I had seen that AW and the others were like "wow ANOTHER mod, and it's THIS guy?" Kind of disheartening to an extent. Sim, AW, and TDS could have handled my resignation a little better than they did, and I probably could have done without throwing a complete bitch fit on the forums that lasted Nth months. It was a cluster**** on both sides, if I knew now what I knew then.

I hold no grudge with you, MAD, or anybody else at AceUplink; but I realize that you probably would still like to see me eaten alive by wolves or something and I honestly don't blame you. The reasoning behind my demeanor at AceUplink is both lengthy and personal, and I'll spare you the insightful monologue (that I'd rather not be public information anyways).

I'm sorry.

PS: I apologize for ****ing up your telephone, something you wanted to blame on me when it wasn't actually my fault in the first place - but that's a conversation from 2003 and water under the bridge. I work for Miniclip.com now and I have since been harassed and threatened by troublemakers who see ME as a "Nazi" and have my contact information and haven't been shy about calling me and saying bizarre things. What goes around comes around, I got what was coming to me.

PPS: We inherited the download database from HackerX's and Nanaman's RA-Reborn. Anything they did to the files was their own idea, we just took up hosting them. We didn't strip anything from any tutorials.

PPP?S: Don't call me Justin, Anthony. Really. :(

P4S: Can I just say "snipe1040" and we can all just laugh and forget about this? :)
The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.
