Title: Aceuplink Survivors....
Post by: MAD Scientist on June 05, 2009, 01:54:48 PM
Hello everyone,

I was sitting here at my desk remembering back to the days where Aceuplink was the center of the RA2 universe. Allow me to introduce myself to the general population of this forum....

I'm MAD Scientist, former moderator of the AU Forums, builder of the DEEP Blue series, innovator of the Project Trinity glitch, and former RA2 junkie. I stummbled upon this forum in my quest for what became of this terrific game and the former forum-friends that I did battle with years ago. I have since discovered that the rich history of this game has been erased by our dear old friends @ RadioF's forums, whom have edited most open source information on the game and has claimed most of the credit for the progression of the community. The old real evidence of what AU did for this game can still be found in a FAQ @ gamefaq.com (which credits everyone that rightly deserves it).

I do recognize some old names on this board, I'm curious where a couple old friends are though....

I what wondering if anyone knows what became of:
- OMEGA
- MiniDJBeirne
- AW
- TDS
- JFranco
- Be0t

While I am not in the know, those guys are probably gone. Check with someone who hasn't been inactive for 2 years.

'Sup Mad?

Only one on the list I've talked to anywhere near recently was AW. He was at RoboGames last year with Carp and a few bots.

Check http://s10.invisionfree.com/Drowning_City_Forums for Omega (leftovers of ARC...Advanced Robotic Combat)
MiniDJBeirne showed up here not long ago, as have a couple others.
Klichka showed up and helped a little on the WIKI https://gametechmods.com/RA2wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Wow, I checked some of the stuffout, and I'm kinda interested as to how the RFS guys (Now known as GatorAIDS) tried to remove AU from history? You seem nicer than they describe you.

Assuplink was never the center of the RA2 universe. The official forums were.

AceUplink was essentially the Soviet Union during the Stalin era. If you disagreed with somebody like say, TDS (aka DaStompa), you would be banned or have your posts deleted/edited. It was a pretty terrible place.

The one redeeming factor of AU was the Battlebots AI pack. That was truly a piece of art...for its time.

I talk to beot every now and again. Still a very odd fella.
AW pops on aim once in a while but we never talk.
mini posted at RFSHQ a few months back(RFSHQ is now deadish)

Out of all the AU staff I respected mad the most, he was a decent bot creater.  he developed many techniques before we started naming techniques.
Shame that you still have a grudge against  RFS.

GOOSE it's good to see you friend!

I assure you I have no grudge, I did however read some of the former postings on the RSF forums about a year after AU went down in flames, those guys were not fans of myself nor ANY of the staff @ AU. Whatever, it's history now... I didn't come here to start a fight or whatever, to tell you the truth Jeffery's post actually made me giggle a bit. Truth of the matter was that AU actually enforced rules and kept order, something that Justin's forum did not, thus it was a safe haven for anyone that felt "wronged" by AU. Furthermore the only real gripe I had w/ Justin and the funky bunch was when they bombed my cellphone w/ 500+ text messages via AIM to SMS and caused me a hefty phone bill for the month and when I called their fearless leader at his home he nearly pee'd his pants, is that the RFS you are talking about?

It's funny to me that no1 else really had as much hatred towards AU as them... and all of a sudden after AU was gone after due to numerous back-end attacks diverting traffic to his site (cause there was no other place to go) by RFS goons...

Quote
Using his notoriety, website traffic was successfully diverted to RFSHQ. In the early months of the website's development, articles were written that highlighted "frauds" done by AceUplink staff members. When the community began to pick up, Radio F Software hired a staff comprised entirely of previously banned or disgruntled AceUplink users and began to abuse loopholes in AceUplink's administration system to cause trouble. In 2005 AceUplink tanked, not because of the quiet attacks from RFSHQ, but because of a hosting contract expiration. Because of its size, RFSHQ kept afloat by assimilating smaller websites on the verge of closing. One such site was Robot Arena Reborn which hosted a database full of every modification to date for Robot Arena 2. Once the files traded hands this database became the main attraction of RFSHQ.

Directly from Wikipedia.
and then they seized and compiled all the faqs/resources and started to be posted around the web after they were conveniently edited to exclude AU mod/member names. One of the last surviving un-touched faq is at gamefaq, take a look for yourselves.... http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/589525.html

....but I digress.

I really wanted to see where this game was in this day and age, how far the designs have progressed and maybe link up w/ some old friends.

More importantly I'm in the process of recovering my old HD and releasing everything I've built and skinned. Stay tuned maybe it'll be ready this weekend

Wow man, those are sweeeeet. It's funny I never stacked or any of that non-sense, I was so anal about my designs I always skinned openings in the body so I wouldn't have random weapons jutting out... hahah

Hopefully I can finally get DEEP BLUE out to the public.

Well howdy doody, looks like you're still alive and kicking - and **** you too buddy. :) It's not MY fault that I took it upon myself to collaborate with some incredibly intelligent and like-minded modders of the game to lay down a format to build upon the game in numerous ways. Myself and my "cronies" created AI expansions that, at the time, revolutionized the Robot Arena 2 modding community.

AceUplink managed to make a BattleBots AI pack (extremely well modded I give you that much, it was beautiful) that ranked up there with "nice to look at but goddamn impossible". What did AU do for the community, really? You all released some modifications but nothing that really gave way to build upon things in the way that myself, Disturbed, Goose, and Starcore decided to take further. In fact, in an ironic kind of way, you led us all together. You can claim a piece of that credit for yourself because without AceUplink there probably would not have been any RFS AI Pack, Starcore AI Pack, or even the DSL mod to blow the game wide open.

If it gives you any solace, Radio F (which began in 1995) disbanded in 2008. I retired from RFSHQ in June of that year to pursue my life where I left off when I hopped on the RA2 bandwagon. I have gone back to being a furry/scaly writer and artist and found a special Mrs. RFS to share the happiness with. I've also ditched the "Radio F Software" moniker and I go by "Dracophile" now - a username that took me 7 years to replace the "temporary" RFS with, but one that personally fits me a lot better. You have full permission to laugh at me if you will because I know I deserve it, but I've done a ****ton of growing up since AceUplink. I rubbed a lot of sh** in your collective faces for no real reason and I am most likely wholly responsible for completely ****ing your website up in every way imaginable. I realize it got to the point where registration was basically blocked off because I had about 3 new accounts a week that went under the radar.

Yes, I did start RFSHQ to completely and absolutely ruin AceUplink. I was out to "do better than you", and that's exactly why we opened on February 12th, 2004 - your domain's "roll over" date (we became the comedy site on May 9th, 2004). When the site opened I was looking to hoard everyone who was banned or disgruntled with AceUplink so that we could build a community that would out-class yours. A little while into the RFSHQ timeline I realized that this was pretty ****ing stupid and I stopped. RFSHQ was an experiment, a joke, and some strange project that took on a life of its own and perpetuated itself on a conglomeration of mostly negative things. The proof is in the pudding, RFSHQ tried way too hard to be like Something Awful and it pretty much blew apart. I created the website with hate in mind and when I wanted to make something out of it I was always reminded of the ill-intent that made the place.

Things could have probably ended a heck of a lot better, but from the beginning I kind of felt like I wasn't wanted there in the first place once I had seen that AW and the others were like "wow ANOTHER mod, and it's THIS guy?" Kind of disheartening to an extent. Sim, AW, and TDS could have handled my resignation a little better than they did, and I probably could have done without throwing a complete bitch fit on the forums that lasted Nth months. It was a cluster**** on both sides, if I knew now what I knew then.

I hold no grudge with you, MAD, or anybody else at AceUplink; but I realize that you probably would still like to see me eaten alive by wolves or something and I honestly don't blame you. The reasoning behind my demeanor at AceUplink is both lengthy and personal, and I'll spare you the insightful monologue (that I'd rather not be public information anyways).

I'm sorry.

PS: I apologize for ****ing up your telephone, something you wanted to blame on me when it wasn't actually my fault in the first place - but that's a conversation from 2003 and water under the bridge. I work for Miniclip.com now and I have since been harassed and threatened by troublemakers who see ME as a "Nazi" and have my contact information and haven't been shy about calling me and saying bizarre things. What goes around comes around, I got what was coming to me.

PPS: We inherited the download database from HackerX's and Nanaman's RA-Reborn. Anything they did to the files was their own idea, we just took up hosting them. We didn't strip anything from any tutorials.

PPP?S: Don't call me Justin, Anthony. Really. :(

P4S: Can I just say "snipe1040" and we can all just laugh and forget about this? :)

I ran into that problem when I returned here a couple months ago. All of these kids these days stack everything (without cheating too), and now I'm having to play catchup.

About AU: I was never actually banned from there, but I assume that was because I didn't post often. My main beef with the place was with allowing DaStompa to be a part of the administration. That guy was a tyrant and an all around douchebag.

Oh, I remembered another thing from AU I liked: the AU motors. I think I re-skinned my copy to remove the AU logos, but I appreciated the extra power. Those motors made fighting the Battlebots AI bots a little less hard.

We've both got our own lives now... I'm actually very impressed that you addressed this personally. I hope this can maybe be an example to the younger kids on here that e-fights are kind dumb. Back then I took all of it really personally, kinda silly in retrospect, AU was a group of my friends. We spent ALOT of time experimenting w/ everything the game had to offer and threw days of our lives into it, kinda like how crazy kids are about W.O.W. now.

Maybe we can dust off some bots and go at it once for ole' time sake... what ya think? :gunz:....

That's right kiddos - the Internet is not really SRS BIZNEZZ (a catchphrase that wasn't even around in 2003), it's only Internet. :P

I came out of the woodwork because a little birdy told me that "someone from RA2 history came back to GTM... and ratted on you in his first post", and at first I was like "haha it's COLONMAN/Chexmix (COOL MAN aka Technex) isn't it?" and my buddy said "no, it's MAD actually". And then I was like, "oh... well crap he hated the heck out of me :(".

I'd battle ya (Thumperizer V Deep Blue) but I've gone through two computers since AceUplink, bro - RA2 is no longer installed on my hard drive. I backed up my files onto a few CDs, but they're in storage across town from where I live. Collecting dust. :(

I still don't have a decent Internet connection six years later anyways. :P

Meh, it was "personal" on my half too. I was really caught up in it and such, TOO far caught up in things, because to be honest at the time I was pretty screwed up (mentally, at least). It wasn't my idea to take the fight IRL (the phone thing), that was a third party suggestion that I laughed at, but they decided to take it way to goddamn seriously.

As for WOW addiction, these my "re-discovered" interest in dragons and reptiles drives me these days. Things were wacky with me in the past because I started trying to be somebody I wasn't, and now that I've just gone back to what seems like I was "meant" to do I've been a lot better. Went on a date today to go see Land of the Lost with "Mrs. Dracophile" - and I had a plush Spyro to give to her, and she had a plush T-Rex and a copy of "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight" for me. :3

These days I mostly try to be a role model for the youngin's on Club Penguin (a company I work with by proxy from my position at Miniclip) since they're all about 13 years old - try to get them not to make the same stupid mistakes I did. I've tried to bury the hatchet with everyone else I've crossed with in the past. I made amends with AW and CARP on their robot combat website a couple years ago by giving them a bunch of photos and such for their archives.

Good to see you guys back and going at it. I knew you would come back Radio. BTW, Thumperizer is in your AI pack, which is in the downloads section, so you can get it if you want to.
Why don't you guys start showcases and see how far behind you have become

I would reccommend you guys check out BBEANS, Clickbeetle's AI tournament

Who cares about the bots, we have two oldies back. Kinda. Ok, one. I'm sure dracophile will go back to GatorAIDS. (I still love that name.)

Anyway, Deep blue is a non invertible poker? if so, I go for tha thumperizer. But in a lighter note, should we have a tha thumperiser based bot for the new Starcore AI? We have got Ultra Violence... (A play on Ultraviolet which in other words is DEEPER blue...)

Stick to these forums, we all have a pretty good time still. This game is certainly not dead by any stretch of imagination, and heck, it is still evolving as we speak.

and then they seized and compiled all the faqs/resources and started to be posted around the web after they were conveniently edited to exclude AU mod/member names. I once found that when searching the internet for Robot Arena 2 Stuff
I also found a bot exchange with bots all from Jimxorb

Yeah, it'd be awsome if you guys would start showcases. :gawe:
BTW, was DSL out before you guys left? You should check out Naryar's, Urjak's, MikeNCR's, Mine, R0B0SH4RK's etc for some cool bots.

Yep, I was here when DSL came out and also for some time after that. I created a promotional RFS DSL AI Pack V1.0 for the DSL mod where I updated some of the bots/teams from my previous stock AI packs and also spiced in some new ones for good measure.

I could go to the workshop and pick up my copy of RA2 I suppose, however most of the bots I actually DO have are just the ones that went into my AI packs. I think I have some old pictures though, I will do some searching for you guys. Special.

GatorAIDS... hehehe. I'd love to see an updated "modern" Thumperizer. For a simple robot design the name went on to be a really annoying AU forum fad. :P

Stick to these forums, we all have a pretty good time still. This game is certainly not dead by any stretch of imagination, and heck, it is still evolving as we speak.

Even though I never met you before, welcome back.

Wow, two vets back on the same weekend. That's like a new record or something.

Anyways, it's always kinda neat when someone from waaaaay back (like, what, 5 years max?) pops back up. We hear about AceUplink and RFSHQ, but very few of us were actually around to see them. From my understanding, it was like one constant flame war (worse than when Venko joined GTM's O: ...). Nowadays, the community is too small to support two communities at e-war.

But welcome back, enjoy your stay, etc, etc. Just please try and stick around longer than some other returnees ;)

February 18th, 2003: Robot Arena 2 is released. I got my copy the day it came out, and I joined AceUplink on March 16th, 2003. RFSHQ opened February 12th, 2004. :3

I was "around" on AceUplink back when it was known as RoboUplink, in the days of the original Robot Arena. SimTycoon (JFranco) was mad at me for calling it RobotUplink on accident.

Way back in the day, when RA2 was still just a demo featuring Nightmare, Yellow Buzzard, and I think a third bot, there were RA1 tournaments. The most feared bot around was a bot by N4S (Need4Speed) named TAWD (Tim Allen's Wet Dream). I took part in such a tournament. In the first round, my former newb self had to fight the great TAWD. When the match begun, he drove into a corner without attacking me. So I attacked and destroyed his bot. The results then popped up, but much to my surprise, it said that N4S won the match. "Now how could that be?" I asked. Apparently on his screen, the exact opposite occurred.

And that is why RA1's online play was so sh**ty.

It doesn't say in your profile but I'm willing to bet money that you are nine years old based solely on the information in this post.

I am fairly certain that if you ever DID meet me in person your threats to "hit me in the face" would probably translate to you awkwardly trying to save face by spouting out a couple of retarded 4chan memes because you'd be unable to cower behind a computer monitor and a keyboard and use those big boy words like "gay" and "really queer". If you actually had the tenacity to attempt to strike me I would have no problem knocking your baby teeth out with my foot. How about instead of acting like a homophobic piece of sh** you instead man-up and either say something of merit and prove to me how the heck you ended up with a "Veteran" status or simply keep to your own simpleton self.

In short? Shut the fuck up.

Inf is a veteran cause he is the best builder in the game. He's been around longer than most people know. According to the wiki, he is 6 foot 1 and 195 pounds. I believe he is 17 years old. Knocking his teeth out may not be so easy.

That aside, he probably remembers you back in the old days (like I said, he's been around a long time) and as you said you were pretty stupid back then.

Wow seriously he is the best builder in the game? My apologies, let me just get down on my knees and start sucking his because I am clearly in the presence of a real[/u] legend. If we're going to start playing the Wikipedia credentials game here then let me just go ahead and say while I don't list my weight, age, height, location, hobbies, school, sexual orientation*, blood type, name of first born, and credit card number I am, apparently, the only user here with the "Forum Master" political stance, and no I didn't just edit that in there myself. According to the powers that be here, I kicked enough ass for enough time to earn myself that title.

"Back then" for me translates to "back then on AceUplink with MAD Scientist", which dates back from 2003 through 2004 (and arguably 2005 if you want to get technical). If infiniteinertia is 17 years old TODAY that puts him in the age demographic of 11 to 13 when this was going on. While I "acted stupid" (in my own words I will admit, because when the crap hit the fan both myself and AU were acting stupid) I also worked solo and with others to create literally groundbreaking RA2 mods for their time. Let me again consult the Wiki to find out what makes infiniteinertia so great. Wow look at that, he can make good horizontal spinners AND he put 36 maces on one of them all at once! Great job! Let's see, compared to people like dummee (first custom components ever), SovereignII (first AI pack ever), goose, Starcore, LuTze, DarkRat (DSL Mod), AW, CARP, (AU BB AI pack), HackerX (RA-Reborn database), Jimxorb (starting the first "database" of downloads), Slider_V (first true "chain" components), and MAD Scientist (starting the Ant craze) infiniteinertia has done a grand total of jack sh** in terms of advancing the Robot Arena 2 community. He put a lot of parts on a robot, big deal. I have a 7 year old brother who can do that.

Am I being an elitist? Unfortunately I think it looks like I am, but I am by no means attempting to say "you suck because I am a Forum Master and you aren't PS have your grandma pull the car around". I simply have a problem with arrogant stuck-up assholes who think the entire world owes them something because they hold an air of greatness around them. If infiniteinertia is the bad-ass that he says he is because he used to make fun of "n00bs" then he will know that he can simply take everything I have just said, throw it behind him, and reply to this post with "yeah well at least I don't screw dragons ZING" and perpetuate his Napoleon complex. If he isn't that bad-ass and instead is just a troublemaker with an ePenis the size of a Freightliner then when he reads these posts he is going to act like it's nothing at all but for the next undisclosed amount of time my words are going to sit on his back and stay there while they sink in.

I am completely unfazed by his accusations of me being *gasp* GAY or even *double gasp* QUEER. Son, you aren't the first person to use that completely original and most certainly not run-into-the-ground derogatory term to try and hurt me. I'm surprised you didn't complete your trifecta by throwing "faggot" in there as well to top it all off and secure your eWin. I don't particularly like being rude to people (because to be honest I'm a really nice and caring guy and this little altercation I feel is giving people the wrong impressions about me) but when you can read the correspondence of enemies of over 6 years and see them settle their arguments and fights once and for all it takes a special kind of asshole to come in and start dropping grade school insults.

Tip: If he wants to play the kindergarten-aged Internet Tough Guy game by threatening to punch me in the face over the Internet then I'm pretty sure I can be retaliatory and make a mockery of his "insults" by throwing the same ploy back in his face. I attacked MAD Scientist's website, he had a valid reason to want to hit me in the face (and we actually settled our demons of 6 years). Unless infiniteinertia is angry because I wrongfully occupied the handicapped parking space outside of the post office for all of five minutes today or something, he does not.

*I think the article does mention furry fandom though.

Hate to break it to you, but RA2 is a game where you Build Bots. If you don't want to give respect to the actual builders, you can't claim respect for the programming aspects of the game. Because without the builders, all of your AI packs, custom components, and ant crazes are pointless.

Just to prove how technically difficult a 36 weapons HS is, I would like you to try to build one (or at least get your 7 year old brother to do it). Oh, before you do, another requirement: don't look at anyone else's. That's what me and Inf were working with when we built Absolute Chaos.

Oh wait, what's that? You build realistic bots? Well too bad buddy, stock is not realistic anymore. Maybe 5 years ago, but that time is long gone.

Now, I may not know the actual reason Inf hates you, but when you start throwing crap around like "He put a lot of parts on a robot, big deal. I have a 7 year old brother who can do that." I had to say something about it because obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. You're just claiming superiority because of age and the "Forum Master" thingamajig, as well as your, and I quote, "groundbreaking RA2 mods." While that may be true, you won't hold much more than custom license plate components against Inf once he finishes his two (yes i said TWO) AI packs.

(Note: I'm not trying to insult you here RFS, just following my nature to debate.)

Honestly, I am giving you (and everyone else) the benefit of a doubt here because I have been outright gone from this community for upwards of over three years. I don't even play the game anymore. I don't blame you if you have no idea who I am or what I've done for fan-made RA2 development, but I'd like to see an example of his absolutely fantastical AI packs. I'm not bragging and saying mine were the coolest things ever to be put on the Internet nor am I attempting to be elitist as you claim, but let me ask you a question about his packs. Does he have it setup where the AI teams have 6 robots (or more if someone has developed it further) and not 3? Does he have more than 15 teams?

I don't know if he does or not - but if his does, then the only reason his pack is able to accomplish that is because of the programming exploration of myself and my partner TheDisturbedOne. Anybody can make an AI pack, because there are numerous tutorials out there, heck I wrote one of the first of what's now many I assume. If he has a special coding twist that bends the rules of the game that me and TDO didn't figure out then I surrender my declaration that he's a moron and I myself have enough egg on my face to feed a starving nation.

If the baseline of your argument is the fact that I build robots from the Internet equivalent of 1798 then this entire "debate" is pretty moot. If you want to make it about robots then I will stoop to your level and I'll go put together a robot with 36 maces on it. I'll go do it too, if it'll really make some vague point clear, that I can apparently "hang" with the now "new legends" or however it works today. I have nothing to prove to anyone though, because I already stated that I didn't enjoy partaking in the building activities of TODAY'S RA2 community.

I joined the community as a robot combat enthusiast (and novice programmer), not as somebody who looked at the game and said "I bet I can fit FIFTY saw blades on that". RA2's community has evolved past the stage of admittingly simple designs and that was enough for me. To be honest I returned back here because I heard MAD Scientist was back in town, and out of all of the people whom I savagely attacked and berated on AceUplink, he probably got it the worst and I felt it my personal duty to make amends with him because I acted out of line. I posted my classic robots for the sake of nostalgia (along with MAD) not because I am a super awesome hardcore robot builder extreme, but because people like myself and MAD come from a time when ability and status was judged on what you DID for the community, not how overloaded you can make a robot. The folks who were around to be a part of the community then understood my gallery, whereas everyone else simply said "where's the fluff" and missed the point. I see now the times have most certainly changed and I feel a little bit out of loop standing here in my Colonial clothing get up and powdered wig.

PS: Thanks for the italicized CliffNotes version of Robot Arena 2.

I want to see this ended before I have to start banning people. I see this argument as pointless, there are 2 sides to every story and you both need to keep your sides to yourself before you tear them apart to the point where some duct tape will no longer fix it. This is going absolutely nowhere, nobody in this topic is going to persuade another that their views are better than the others. I don't want to see another utterance about this. Its a shame that the return of some people who had been away for a while had to be ruined because of petty arguments like this.

So we need to move on to discussing the history and leave the insults.....else the thread will be reclosed, and some could miss out on some insight into RA2's back ground, that has lead to where we are now.
If you need to vent,... find a toilet.  Else keep on topic.

It was lost to a brief "Who's got the biggest joystick" argument.

In short? Shut the **** up.

IMO, the best ending ever to a flame war post ever.

And seriously guys.

Wait till he screws up, THEN flame him. He hasn't done ANYTHING but try to make amends and help to fix what he has done. I think that it is a good thing that he is trying to do that.

And RFS, definetly check out DSL 2.1. Its very good, and all realisticism.

How much hard drive space does DSL take up?

Hate to break it to you, but RA2 is a game* where you Build Bots.

*From the free dictionary:
Game
1. An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime.

In short, it's supposed to be a relaxed pastime, A hobby. Not something people try to attack people's sexual orientation and personal life over.

This thread proved it to me. Half of you people are way too disconnected to even understand that the thing is about fun.

You'd better ban me soon, because I'll probably take it as a personal job to alienate and harass every new member until he leaves. (In other words, be Nary and inf at the same time.)

I suppose attacking people's political opinions is fine on "a relaxed pastime"...

theres no fun in a competitive sport if theres no competition. if games were just about fun, then they wouldn't be fun. example in soccer- "Hey, you can't just pick up the ball and run!" other guy says "oh just let him do it, hes having fun."

Sage, There isn't a rule where you dictate what other people build. If they ask, you help. If they don't, you leave them the **** alone. In a lighter note, you guys seem to be really trigger happy with double standards, no? You are so eager to reccomend this and that yet play the "It's a competition" card when other people ask why.

Do all of you, as customers, reccomend your personal choices to random people in shops?

Naryar: I do it in the off topic board.

In total, QED.
