Actually, the reason that honey bees' stingers get ripped out of their bodies is so the stinger will stick in the victim's skin and continue to pump venom even after the bee flies away, thus creating maximum pain and irritation. Also, the stinger releases an alarm pheromone which attracts more bees to that spot so you will get multiple stings in the same area. Since honey bee hives are so huge, the workers are more or less expendable and it doesn't matter so much if they die.

I've heard of something like they don't lose their stingers when battling against other small insects. They only lose them against vertebrates or mammals or something.
