a possible tournament with new format!
« on: March 24, 2009, 12:41:53 PM »
ok so i used to host some tournaments, but they take a lot of time and effort and i hosted a few in a short space of time and in the end just couldnt handle it. when i was hosting tournaments, the main thing i wanted to achieve was variety and giving you all entertainment.

with all that being said before i finished hosting tourneys i had an idea that didn't get off the ground due to my lack of concentration so here it is...

this tournament idea that i had has the entrants face a series of challenges to obtain points.

-2 on 1: your robot faces 2 robots at once that are a weight class below yours.
-beat the box: a beat the clock challenge.
-Tilt: a tabletop match against a strong well built rammer/wammer(wedged rammer).
-Survival: a 1 on 1 match against a powerful bot that is at least a weight class above yours.
-i would also consider a death match at the end with the 2 top bots to decide the winner.

points work like this, the best performing bot on a challenge gets... lets say 10 points (depends how many are entered) and last place gets 0.

seems like a pretty nice tourney that offers variety, i will have a video demo of all the types of challenges on youtube shortly (NOTE: i made the video some time ago and the robots you face in challenges would be submitted (hopefully) by an accomplished bot builder).

what do you all think?

Edit: video is up..

Interesting.

Suppose the whole "weight class above" or below thing means a decent higher/lower class bot?
Thinking of my DSL BW.. which can beat Ronin (the DSL replica HW) and such..

this tournament would have to be stock to start i believe to test everyone's stock skills in a number of different ways. the original plan was stock lw.

i also made a mistake with the survival challenge info, the robot you face should be at least 1 weight class higher.. i had plans for the lws to face a hw to see who would last the longest :P

video should be up soon, and should explain the challenges better.

should also note that this kind of format requires 0 byes and any amount of bots could enter, plus everyone would see their bot compete in the same amount of challenges as all the others except the top 2 if the death match is included.

So it's a series of challenges and the bot that performs and the best overall wins? It sounds pretty cool.

How about a boss rush, you k'now, two LW's against a HW that has probably got some sort of weakness... EX: A rammer with large wheels, a Hammer with an exposed side...

i went to continue ARBBC but the computer that i was hosting it on i think got formatted and everything was lost, the bots, arena and some of my better robots were also lost.

this is an idea i'm putting out there, i might get a small group to test it out. i don't think people should lose faith in me yet as i failed to complete 1 tournament O.o i also hosted another 3? and they all got completed.

also my AI skills aren't really that great, if someone could ai the bots and send them in a pack i shouldn't have a problem recording, uploading and posting the vids.

The only thing I dislike is beat the box. The box should atleast get better batteries and/or stronger weapon motors.

that was just a demo and no the box isn't going to have weapons, the drive was to stop immobility issues :P (i would let it sit there if i could) if anything it'll get more defense. here's the idea behind each challenge in case some haven't got it yet.

2 on 1: tests the offense and defense of your robot.
beat the box: tests the offense only.
tilt: tests the drive, pushing power and wedge (if any) of your robot
survival: tests the defense only (unless you can knock the much bigger bot out).

if anyone wants to throw together a small test tourney pm me, just another 2-3 people will do.

So it's like a Pentathlon for your bot. The same bot competes in all challenges. Sounds interesting.

I don't know if this would work for one of your ideas, Ian. Spyguy and I had thought up a "Challenge Arena" where your own bot would face 1, 2, or all 3 AI bots; but individually/1 at a time.
The weight classes would be up to you. After/If your bot defeated the first AI, only then would it move on to the next AI... and so on. How far your bot gets totally is up to your bot's aptitude.
Obviously if the AI's are more than one, then their weight class should be lighter than yours: say your entry bot was HW, then if 2 challengers, then thye should be 2 MWs; if 3 then they should all be LW (or mix them... MW at first, and final bot is LW).
But you get the idea... What do you think?

.
Input is appreciated. :)

yeah that's basically the idea. i seen that in arena idea's, so it's kinda like a gauntlet? maybe it could be the final challenge between the 2 top robots.

i thought about the pros and cons of a tourney like this..

Pros: no bye rounds needed at all, adds variety, you get to watch your robot as much as anyone else (expect maybe top 2 at the end).

cons: more videos needed to be recorded, uploaded and linked.

The Challenging AI are individually partitioned off and kept from even approaching the Contestant bot,... until the defeat of the previous bot(s). Then the partition is removed.
Technically, if that's what you're asking, it's done with python controlled gmf objects (like the inserted and removed gmf objects in the practice garage).

BTW: All of these bots would fight on the same turf w/o any arena obstacles or hazards. The Contestant bot has only the challenge of defeating those 3 AIs, one after another.

Overall, I think your idea is good, Ian.
I'll get back with you later about this arena.

BTW2: When you have a congruent plan together, don't forget to run this by ACAMS.

i just need to figure out what's a good amount of entries for this. if you think about it 10 entries with 4 challenges = 40 videos that's less entrants and more videos that is the one concern i have about the tournament.

good news, i still have all the robots featured in the video so i can use them as the challenges still. i don't wanna race into anything and it would be best to have it all organized before any talk of starting the tourney happens.. i just really like the idea.

I would be one of the first to reserve a spot in the tourney. It is a great idea.
The points could work easily
(For 10 bot tourney)
1st: 10 points
2nd: 9 points
etc.
On all of them. Based on time.
I built that big robot on that TV show that time
