I like the "four random bots" idea, because it is actually based off their ability to do the tournament, instead "they have been here a while" or "they talk a lot".

But they still shouldnt be nooby. It doesnt matter if Sparkey could AI or not, he would probably end up running the tourney like LRA2 does, with trying to change the rules and stuff...

How about add I this: if you, the builder, do not think the person can run a tournament, you just don't join their tournament. If he gets no entries then he can't run a tournament. There is also the rule already in place that says you can't run a tournament if you have already failed to do so.

But theres always people who will just join any tourney. It could be the worst tourney ever designed and people still just say "I'll Join!"

Then that becomes their own gamble for joining the tournament.

I think, ultimately, we are trying to get new hosts to prove themselves worthy in a more solid way before we all waste our time.

"4 Bot Test" recorded, cut, posted and displayed would give most people a general idea of whether they want to enter a tournament or not.  If they post it, and the AI stinks... or the editing is poor, or they play Miley Cyrus for background music, whatever... you have some grounds to decide if you want to participate.  Rather than just taking the new host's word for it.

I think that there should be a seperate subforum in the Tournaments and Contests section, titled 4 Bot Test or something like that. Using the four given (and very different) bots, that could be found in a stickied thread in the section. Each little 4 Bot tournament will be in  its own thread, which will be a poll. After a two week or so voting period, It will be either yes or no. If it is no, then they must wait 3 months before they are allowed to start another thread. We can keep a list in another stickyed thread, and anyone who has already done a good job will be put on the list, along with the people who pass. The people who fail can go onto another list in the same thread, with the date that they can have a second attempt.

only thing I can suggest is a split section you have the "big league" and the "little league" newer members cant make any big league tournaments until a few successful little league tournaments are made.

that would give the "big league" section more prestige like what Scrap is after while not reducing the amount to the point the community is on life support  ;)

I like this idea.  You could put limits on the size of little league tournaments, say 16 bots or 32 at the very most, so the host doesn't bite off more than they can chew.  After they finish one or two little league tournaments they can make big league tournaments, which can be as big as you want since by that time the host will have experience.

Or, a simpler variant.  Just add to the general tournament rules a stipulation that your first tournament can be no bigger than 16 bots.  Your second tournament can be no bigger than 32, and after that it can be as big as you want.

Wait... that's actually pretty similar to the 4-bot test.  The 4-bot test is kind of like a mini 4-bot tournament.  Now that I think about it, that's a pretty good idea.

I think 32 for your second tourney is too much personally. Maybe 8 and then 16?

I dont know if this was mentioned but why dont you say for instence G.K goes againest a new person who hasn't done a tourment before (only if they want to make a tourment) and if they win they could get a decal as a medal and put it on the robot they won with. For losing I dont know.

I like the idea of the Four Bot Challenge, I have been thinking about maybe starting a tournament after BBEANS, but I dont know if I have the capability. A Four Bot Challenge would allow me to attempt something simple, give me experience with FRAPS and splashes/opening cutscenes, background music and all that good stuff. So it would be just as much of a "learning and improvement" experience as it would be a test. Sounds like a good compulsory thing that everyone who wants to host a tournament should do.

A whole new thread section under the "Tournaments and Contests" area called, "Four bot Tournament Challenge" (or some other more suitable name) should be implemented in it.
This would contain a sticky with a list of:
-Green light tournament hosts (Those who have passed the 4 bot test with the general approval of the community)
-Yellow light Hosts (Those who can do it, but maybe the edges are still rough, bad ai's, lame splashes, little to no obvious effort)
-Red lights (Those who do not have the capability or follow through to complete a tournament at all)

Those who are red's cannot host, yellows can but only a max of 16 bots and its basically builder beware, greens can host up to 32.

Not alot of Tournaments get above 32 entries, only events like BBEANS and CC seem too, if a green light host wants more than 32 than he/(she?) must pm JoeBLo or ACAMS (Or whoever is best I am unsure) for permission. This can be done if there is overwhelming interest, or other good reasons, it is then up to our Trusted Moderators to make the best decision to keep everyone happy.

Of course those who have already hosted succesful Tournaments will automatically become green lights.

Perhaps it will become mandatory in the rules or discussion of each tournament that the host specify whether he is green or yellow?

As well as everyone posting their mini tourney's as "d-larks four bot challenge" for community review.

Well, thats all for my ideas. Would be a neat Idea, If anyone wants to send me four bots, I might try and do the AI/ Mock Tourny thing as a test to see how well the idea works in practice. I don't mind being a guinea pig and am 90% sure I have the capabilities.
