Hmm... fair enough. Don't forget to ask his permission, though. :P

You don't really need to spend much money to build a robot. You can always think out of the box and use common household components. Mythbusters used a simple wok for the shell of the first version of Blendo. And JB also showed here that CD stack casings and soda cans can be made useful. Some of RFS's showcased bots don't really need money. Me and my FRC '09 team also built most of our prototype bot using junk material (we had to fabricate the final bot, though). We just bought flat bars, nuts and bolts from our local shop (CPU, motors, wheels and controllers were provided). A trip to the hardware store should do. :D

or you could go to a hobby store. My first prototype bot is made out of an RC car.

6 YEARS!!!!!!!!

Lol

Listen, if you want to make a robot, then you need money.
I mean, 2 small AW motors cost me £39, which is expensive, but the motors are much better than others i had used in my AWs.
Overall my new AW, Little Patience cost me £70, which is rather expenisive.
Trust me, if your thinking of becoming a roboteer, then money shouldnt be a worry.
Damn I should probably put something fancy in this bit huh?

Use Tigre outrunner motors. They are fast, cheap, and easy to mount.

Depends on where you go cheap on. Armor, wheels, weapons, and motors you could go cheap on if you were crafty. But all electronics is some thing you should never go cheap on. Ever.

Remember always expect everything to be 2 to 3 times the cost of the robot you originally planned.

It actually is possible to build a good bot inexpensively., I think there was a SHW made completely out of lumber and recycled materials called "Bobbing for French Fries" or something like that that was built really cheap and actually won some fights.

On a side note, does anyone know where one could get cheap RC equipment? I don't need any at the moment but it's good to know.
Avoid the beam and you won't get hit!

The biggest problem with using house hold parts or parts out of a junkyard is that they are not nearly as good or reliable as something you buy off of robot marketplace. I would say for drive motors buy 2 cheap drills and use the motors out of them.

Here's a good place to look:
http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=166

There's lost of parts, some free, and if you've got the money, some whole robots in wroking condition.

If anyone has 900 pounds lying around, Iron Awe is for sale; the version that flipped out Bigger Brother.
