What would YOU build?
« on: May 15, 2008, 08:28:37 PM »
Unlike Clickbeetle and MikeNCR, not all of us are engineering geniuses. So, what kind of real bot would you build if you had that knowledge?

For me, a middleweight crusher. Razer-esque, of course. It would have sloped sides (to imbalance spinners), a steep wedge, and a huge beak. The beak would be serrated, to possibly chew through wires the main piercing attack didn't directly hit.

So, how about the rest of you guys?

A MW sawbot/wedge hybrid, closely related to Ankle Biter but longer and flatter. Large rear wheels like RA2 slim wheels, these ones slightly enclosed, to make the bot invertible.
And if the weight allows it, reinforced plating on the wedge's edge and a internal servo to make the saw rise/lower, to use when inverted for getting the saw to work again.

I will perhaps make a RA2 bot like that, for showing you, and posting it there.

A shell spinner like Megabyte, definatly. They're just so destructive.

lw shell spinner. ZIGGO anyone. i already made a scale drawing of the bot. all parts to scale but the wight came out to 150.6. think geared perm 132 at a 10:1 ratio. it will cost about 12000 to build.

i dont think a perm is the right motor for a LW...

AW plain old wedge. got wheels and chassis done. but robot combat in insect classes are not popular in Brazil. only hobbyweights(few spinners/flippers) and middleweights(still crappy pushers/wedges)are.

I feel like RA2lover's. Perm 132 looks too powerful and unstable for a LW.

I'd go for some kind of pop-up wedge, maybe something like MikeNCR's Appollyon with an extra set of side-spikes down at the leading edge so I could double as a S&S.  I liked his setup with the wedge, the top hooks to hold the opponent on the chassis, and the pint-sized flamethrower, not to mention the chain-whip tail - I'm into damage.

^ Yeah! Go metal mashing!
If I could make a robot, (and had the money) I would make a robot with a small hammer, flailing weapon, pop up flipper, and mabey some spikes on the edge of the opup part (so it can pop the enemie robots wheels if I'm lucky).

Too big. A regulation MW is 120 lbs, but the upcoming Battlebots competition is using a 160 lb class.

I also agree to the sentiment. A Perm would result in what I call the "2x4 effect", so named for a strong but unstable spinner: when it hit something, it would go flying, and the stress from such a hit would destroy your internals. Stick to an E-tek or a Magmotor.

ya its a HW  but i have found a way around the 2X4 thing. i may not be a skilled bot biulder but i am a very mechcanicly minded person. the only thing it needs to keep from killing it self is a few minore chages on old ideas.

Heh, I wouldn't call myself an engineering genius.  Physics was my least favorite subject in college.  And if you look at my videos of Defy Ant, you'll notice it didn't exactly dominate the competition.

If I had the resources and know-how (and motivation) I would build a HW with a lifting arm like Wedge of Doom's, but on the other end there would be a claw, so when the arm went up the claw would come down and crush bots.  It would use a lift, flip, then turn around and crush strategy.

To lack feeling is to be dead, but to act on every feeling is to be a child.

There are a couple of Robot Wars competitors (8645T, Robochicken) who use a flipper/axe combo like that. The only problem with your idea is that to get enough power for a crush, you probably need hydraulics, which may be too slow for a lifter.

Last I checked, they had discontinued the Etek. They found some in a storehouse and were loading them off a while back, but I doubt there are any left now.

E-Teks aren't a little to big to put in a LW FBS ? I mean a flat one, Ziggo-style?
