Team Cyclone
« on: June 12, 2010, 08:25:06 AM »
Yep, i'm gonna be building my own robot. a FW tracked robot with two protruding spikes, like 101 but with double the weaponry and the spikes being electrically powered. Still VEEEERY early in production. Going to start making it awesome in the 6 week holidays.

I'm just throwing some ideas and thoughts out here.

1. How will your weapon damage the opponet/control the fight to win?
2. How will you build your tracks? Custom from some company or make them your self? Rubber or metal links like a bulldozer? Have you ever seen a truly affective tracked bot?

Problems I see.

1. Your weapon will not be able to cause damage or control a fight and seems like a waste of weight.
2. Tracks need to be tensioned to stay on. One hit from a spinner and you are done. Tracks are generaly wasted weight because they don't offer any mobility and you still can get outpushed.

I also recomend 4 18 volt drill motors and colson caster wheels for an unbeatable featherweight drive train.

Good luck

1. It's only a VERY early beta, might change it.
2. It comes free with the base (http://www.lynxmotion.com/Product.aspx?productID=660&CategoryID=121) so I thought "Why not?"

Sounds Awesome Fotep! What do you plan on calling it?

Planning Raider, Aeza, or CybeRaider.

a FW is 30 pounds, that track kit is designed to handle about 5 pounds plus it was not designed with combat in mind. try starting smaller and more basic

Check this out if you want a bot kit: http://Kitbots.com

I have used the 18 volt drill motors to great sucess with Shish-Kabot. If you are determined to use the kit you posted you probably could make a sub par hobbyweight.

I don't want a hobby robot, i want a fighting robot.

Step 1 to improve: 18v drill motors
Step 2: ?Up to you guys?

PS: Is this a better base? http://www.lynxmotion.com/Product.aspx?productID=279&CategoryID=5

Did you even check out Kitbots.com? The kits are based on very competitive bots. Surgical strike is ranked #1 in the Hobbyweights.

Hobbyweight is the 12 lbs weight class.

I did, but they didn't seem to have what I wanted. Either that or i couldn't find their full list of item sellage. Roaming robots only has FW, AW and HW, BTW.

That base you just posted Fotep says in the page that it is for autonomous robots.
I built that big robot on that TV show that time

Thats a 3lbs sumo bot. You could build a crappy beetleweight with that.
Heres a real baseplate
http://cgi.ebay.com/2024-T3-Aluminum-Plate-50-x-12-x-24-/320419599364?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4a9a7f1404

Edit: You aren't going to find any true pre-made bots where you just add a weapon and go. If you do not have capibility / abillity to make a baseplate for a bot you probabily can't make a weapon or armor either. Questions to ask yourself before you start your build.

1. Do you have ability to work with metal or plastic?
2. Do you have the tools?
3. Do you know anyone who has experience or tools who can help you?
4. Do you have a design or plan?

The answer to all them is yes, but we're carp when it comes to wiring.

OK the reason i said what i said was to try and save you from wasting 400$ on something that wouldn't work, even now the sumo bot kit your looking at wouldn't hold up very well its not designed for huge impacts, its designed for pushing. I'm just trying to give some advice to help you from wasting your time and money.

oh and for the record Sparkey98 i have built over 11 combat robots in the past 2 years, all of witch, even my crappiest designs, trump your cardboard boxes ten fold. in the past 4 competitions I've been to I've won 3 1st 2 2nd and a 4th, videos are on youtube, and no there aren't any strings attached to my bots

you can take your advice from Sparkey98 if you like but but wouldn't you rather have someone with real credentials give you help

sorry if i have come come off cocky but its frustrating that you would rather listen to a kid that does this

rather then the person that does this

you mean that piece of paper with the fan scotch taped to it, I'm sorry but you need to have controlled linear movement in order for that to qualify, witch it does not. i will give you some credit, at least you have something RC now, but you might have better luck with wheels next time

Ummm, no. It is made out of hobbygrade foam laminated with packing tape, and has a hobby zone model airplane motor attatched to a three channel reciever, and can move forward very iseally.

Not to mention I now have a walker, a four channel Sumo bot, and a face spinner.

and a hackbot wege.

your brushed ff-030 motor with the prop attached to a piece of depron foam does not qualify as a combat robot because it does not show controlled forward movement, all it can do is spin uncontrollably. it is "something" but you would not be able to compete with it at any normal competitions other then to teach you Humility. as for the sumo bot statement, sumo bots by the standard rule set are autonomous, so you wouldn't control them. plus you will never need more then two channels to drive a sumo bot, no matter how many drive motors you are using one channel for right side forward/back, and another for left side forward/back

enough off topic rubbish here..

...Like?If you're going to just critisize at every possible moment, then I seeno point you bwing here. You ahve to HELP somehow if your going to beso negative.

he was offering you advice, take it or leave it but dont bite back when you dont want to hear something.. you should be thankful for others showing an interest.. they could sit back and watch you pour countless $$$ into something that wont reach your end goal.

remember text does not convey feelings.. if you think he is being mean its your own personal thoughts when reading it.. nothing to do with the poster.
