Think of it from Mark's shoes. The choice is between a boring-looking robot with a so-so chance of winning, and the holy grail of engineering with a next to zero chance of winning.

Any FIRST bot is way more advanced than any normal combat robot. On them you have potentiometers, gyros, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors out the wazoo. :P oh and did I mention they have to run autonomously?
