So, I'm up against this guy who runs Cyber Valley and Swords of Revealing Light and then has the balls to say this about my deck: I'm actually astounded.

With ai tournaments they just rush each other at every opportunity with no variation. its that bad that I think its affected the meta as rather then make interesting and fun design, all that's gets made is bots with more razors slammed onto a tribars and razors under the bot that fly out of nowhere then ***** in a bukkake party. its really getting out of hand. so that's why I don't tournament, im the kinda guy who doesn't like following meta since I like variety and interesting concepts rather than bot shop clusterfocks.
You see, whenever there is an established meta in something, fun can still be had. You play Yugioh, right? When some guy came 3rd (or something like that) in the World Champs using Mystic Tomato, everyone went crazy and started copying his 'innovative' idea. If you try to break the meta by doing something unorthodox, you can have some fun. However, RA2's steep learning curve and over 10 years of testing bot designs may make this difficult. And when I say 'innovative', it doesn't mean something that hasn't been done before, just something that isn't a 'joke bot' and has been executed in a way that makes it successful, more so than previous iterations of that bot type. Variety will only come if you attempt to instigate it somehow, either by doing what I just said or hosting a tournament yourself in which people won't want to/can't use 'meta' bot types.

Yeah, you'd have some people without rivals and that goes against the gimmick

Okay, guys, let's try not to clog up the thread with this. It was fun for the first instance but let's try to keep things on topic. In the spirit of the tournament, I'll allow Kosso and Nary to have at it a tad bit more, same goes with any other rivalry, but try not to make quote walls while you're at it.

Btw... shouldn't we create a new thread section for this forum? For Robot Arena 3 related topics.
I think that should happen, at some point. However, it'd just be empty space right now because the game's not even out. Hopefully, if we find the game fun, tournaments will be happening for them asap, too.

Haha, well, I've seen heavyweights drastically slow down, so I'd imagine AWs would probably end up completely stopping if they insufficient battery power. Never happened to me before, tho.

This was going to be my 800th post, but I overshot. Instead, it's my 800th + 42 post, which is also pretty good, I guess.

The best new tournament host 2015 is at it again with another terrible gimmick tournament!
BORING RULES: -DSL 2.2, standard building style, HW -No cheatbot parts, custom parts, etc. -Multibots are not allowed -No BFE, AAM, EXP, or whatever other crazy acronym you guys use -Arena will be the Ring Arena, 3 minute matches -Single elimination, best of 3 matches -16 (hopefully) spots -I will not enter. -Havok rule: In the event of a major havok occurring during a match, I will rerecord the match. If you feel like your bot was unfairly influenced by a havok that I did not consider restart-worthy, say something and I'll see about redoing the match.
THE GIMMICK: -Entrants will signup without actually entering any robots yet (kinda like Pot Luck) -All entrants will select a rival (the rival must also be in the tournament, obviously) -Rivalry must be mutual; If I asked ACAMS to be my rival and he said no, I'd have to pick someone else. -Similarly, if I pick ACAMS to be my rival and he said yes, then he would not also get to pick a second rival. -If there are an odd number of entrants by the time the deadline rolls around, whoever entered last will not be able to participate, unfortunately. -Once the entering phase is completed, each entrant PMs me a bot type. Their rival has to build a bot of this type. I will post the assignments once they all have been made. -I reserve the right to refuse any given robot type. Gyro Drills, Crawlers, SnS and Trinity bots are banned. -All entrants will build their bots and submit them and all that jazz. -Hybrids are okay so long as the main weapon system is the assigned type. For this tournament, "main weapon system" is defined as "the one with the most weight, including extenders, baseplate anchors, motors, etc." The weight total does not include batteries, however. -The first round of the tournament will be rival vs rival matches. After that, it'll be a standard single elimination tournament.
Thoughts? Anything I should change up? Anything I missed?
This is now a signups topic and the rules may not change. Enjoy, you've got 9 months :)

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting about the Steam discussion page. Well, we'll just have to make a thread on there detailing what GTM is and that those interested in RA3 should definitely visit here.

I still hope the community can persevere if this happens, tho. Can't let an amazingly long-lasting forum like this to go to waste.
honestly i doubt that ra3 will outlast ra2. I wouldn't worry too much tbh. I'm sure we'll have our own RA3 subsection added anyway.
Oh, I wasn't doubting that we'd have RA3 stuff going on, but I hope we can direct more players over here for tournaments and stuff rather than them thinking a potential official forum is the only place to go.

This will be unsalvageable, on a creative level, if there is no customization methods or glitches to make the blandness fun. Let's hope the latter is not the case and we can customise this as much as we want. (Unless the RA team make their own forum for RA3 )
I wouldn't be too surprised if they did make their own forum because we, on this forum, don't know how to help people yet but they will. I still hope the community can persevere if this happens, tho. Can't let an amazingly long-lasting forum like this to go to waste.

It seems to me like placing down components has snap-to-grid going on. I hope this is something you can turn on/off. It'd be useful for matching up drive but annoying if you want to go for a precise design.

I've updated the OP with a link the new webpage and the Steam page.

Oh, wow. Not sure I entirely like the look of how the robots move. Seems a bit too akin to the Robot Wars games where it just looks like they're sliding. Hope to see some footage of robots leaving the ground and see how well the game handles physics. Also, 26 May. Not too far away!

Of course, hopefully everyone will send one, but that might be too much to ask for.
I sure hope it isn't too much to ask for. If we go out of our way to penalise tournament hosts if they do not do what they said they were going to do, I think we should ask for the same of those who wish to participate in these sort of tournaments (where you must sign up and then make a robot, not the other way around.)

defining "main weapon system", so I'll define it as "the one that has the most weight, including extenders and baseplate anchors and all that". If that sounds reasonable, I'll add it to the OP.
So a 51/49 split is cool?

Not sure about the bot type thing entirely though, is the arena open? Otherwise giving your opponent flipper would be an easy win?
The Ring Arena is open but I think the idea is to give your opponent something more outlandish, or perhaps something you haven't seen them build before or in a long time, rather than go for something that might actually give you the edge against them.
