GF93's DSL Rep Refining Corner
« on: November 07, 2009, 03:18:26 PM »
Hello readers!

On DSL, have you ever taken a replica apart to modify and/or improve its performance? If so, you'll know what ways you can fix up a replica so it performs much more like its real-life counterpart, or maybe even rebuild it from the ground up! This thread's dedicated to that funny little pasttime. Here's an example I did earlier.

Panic Attack 3 (DSL 2.1)

Original Performance
Originally, I was unhappy with how PA3 performed, as it was too slow, and its turning was little to be desired. As a result, I took it into the Bot Lab, and found out that the problems came from the fact that it was powered by thin motors (Underpowered), with Storm Wheels (Cheating and low HP) which, on such a heavy machine, were too unreliable and slow.

Changes
I stripped the machine out completely (Except for the weapons), and replaced the drive with Fast NPCs with Micro Wheels on them, and changed the batteries for orange Odyssey batteries, where previously, only small black Odyesseys resided.

What effects did the changes have?
PA3 now looks and performs much better than it did. Its wheels are no longer visible through the top plate on the ground, is now much faster, can turn much better, and as an added bonus, also lowered the ground clearance to an extent that it can now get underneath the DSL 2.1 version of Biohazard from the front! You can Download it below.

In battlebots, Panic Attack was more of a lifter, so you should put a servo instead of a snapper.

Also, how does it perform when AIed?

I know, but i'm thinking he could edit the snappers txt file and make it so it'll go slower, but still be as good as a snapper.

I'm only coming up with ideas so don't be an ass about it.

Those are lifter burst motors that power PA3's spikes and top panel. They move more slowly, but are still quite powerful, so they look good and work well on lifting weapons, such as Behemoth's scoop, or Vlad the Impaler's lifting forks.

Also, I can't AI, BFE, or edit Text Files. I am willing to learn though, it it helps me improve.

Although I can't AI, I can presume it would perform quite well at least. Do you know anywhere where I can learn to replace the old versions of the replicas with the improved, AIed versions in the team spaces?

Ofcourse it is, its only the game content and AI teams that change in DSL, not the games AI system.

I'd love to see what you've been working on, Craaig!

OFF TOPIC: I also noticed I'm against you next in "Replica Wars". I'll be looking forward to the day the Quarter Finals commence!

Should be a good match - I wonder whether your wedge will get under my flipper? I reckon that'll be the deciding factor :P

I'll have to agree. Cassius II's flipper is powerful, but not great at getting under stuff, which was the reason for the hinged skirt at the front.
Bigger Brother however, does look better at getting under stuff, but apart from OOTAing Naryar (Well done on that, by the way!), I didn't get to see too much demonstration of its power.

Thought I'd bring my old thread back from the dead with this little query- I'm working on an internal rebuild of the Chaos 2 replica (IE. Swapping out the batteries and motors for more powerful ones), but I've encountered a problem in the fact that when I remove the side panels to do so, I can't put them back on due to intersecting components.

If there's anyone who can BFE them back on once I've put the stronger motors and things into the robot, that'd be great.

it would bee easier to duplicate the existing Batteries and Motors > Text edit them > BFE txt file name swap..

1 minute job tops..

I did do that for the RADs that the original rep uses, but it has side effects on other reps- for instance, T-Minus can now only drive in circles, and El Diablo drives around way too quickly. Therefore, I thought that once I'd installed the new motors on Chaos 2, I'd reset the RADS to their old values, making the old reps fightable again.
