Yeah, you can easily use the 'PS2 isn't retro because it doesn't have 8-bit and cartridges' logic (which is somewhat true, PS2 and Xbox isn't retro) to say that the PS1 isn't retro either, and I'd certainly say it's pretty classic.

Did you know that in japan the Dreamcast was supported till 2007?

That would prove my theory, then. High speed internet was widely available in Japan long before the US. The Dreamcast was just before it's time...

Can you imagine what a Sega console for this generation may have been like?
Yeah I can imagine

BTW does the PS2 count as a retro console now that it's out of production?

The first post of the thread gives the criteria of retro-gaming.

And the PS2 is still in production... They still manufacture and sell consoles and one of the 2012 sports titles came out for it.

I disagree with this. While not as old as some others, the PS1 is pretty retro. I'm under educated here, but I think PS1, N64 and.. well Microsoft didn't really do consoles back then I don't think so just PS1 and N64 are at the same levels with eachother.

hmm then what of the GBA?

Retro. It's the predecessor to the Nintendo DS for the most part.

Here's how it goes for me.

Anything before PS1 is Retro.

Anything before Xbox 360 is Classic.

Anyone here ever get an Atari Jaguar?

I remember seeing those in the stores at the end of their life.  I could have gotten a new one for $30... Been regretting it ever since.  Had I known eBay and the internet explosion was right around the timeline corner, I totally would have snagged that $30 Jag.   q.q

Refer to the first post...

Retro/Classic Gaming - Anything video game related that was released during the PlayStation/Nintendo 64 era or before. The only newer generation system accepted into this category would be the Sega Dreamcast.

This is how the classic gaming community defines it's self.

Discuss all things that fit this definition in this thread.

This, but for just about every NES game that was released after the SNES. The later they were made, the harder they are to find, it seems. Same goes for Atari 2600 games.

lol nope, my dad was into computers etc. so we grew up with an apple pc and a C64.

I probably consider games/systems from 2 generations ago and before to be classic/retro

Also I'm not sure if anyone has seen this but some guy sold his massive collection of video games which was made up of (mostly sealed) nintendo/sega/nec fullsets including rare titles for $1.2 million US (1 million Euro) link to auction:

Been playing homeworld 1 right now.

It's the first 3D space RTS ever, and it's still pretty awesome. Hard as heck, but still awesome.

Now to win it without cheats...

I never saw a portable N64, but I know someone built a portable NES and SNES before.

A handheld PS2 would be nice, but that one seems to have a strange configuration for D-pad in relation to the analog sticks. You would have to hold it weird for a lot of the games I would play.
