Retro & Classic Gaming
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:53:19 AM »
Retro/Classic Gaming - Anything video game related that was released during the PlayStation/Nintendo 64 era or before. The only newer generation system accepted into this category would be the Sega Dreamcast.

This is how the classic gaming community defines it's self.

Discuss all things that fit this definition in this thread.

MGS is probably my favorite PS1 game, unoriginal as that may be as a choice.
Who here loves Super Metroid?

Oh yes, I've recently downloaded it for my Wii, and I must say, it's really good. I already had Metroid II: Return of Samus on my Gameboy and I'm hoping to obtain Metroid: Zero Mission at some point, so I figured- why not?

some good retro links for everyone :)

Reviewers and collectors:

http://www.youtube.com/user/InecomCompany - My favorite youtube retro channel! this guy is funny, easy to listen to, loves the Vectrex and has a great collection of many different consoles/handheld/games that he reviews.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Highretrogamelord89 - 1800+ videos of retro games.

http://www.youtube.com/user/PeteDorr - Does (mystery) unboxings, has a large collection and seems to love obscure titles.

http://www.youtube.com/user/cubex55 - over 4,000 videos for mostly retro games, I believe all of them are longplays.

Sites:

http://www.retrogamingcollector.com/Retro-Gaming-Collectors/Collectors.html - Plenty of info on retro stuff also contains a lot of Retro youtube channel links to collectors etc.

http://www.atariage.com/ - Has a great homebrew community and forums.

http://gamesdbase.com/ - A tonne of gaming info including everything retro, has old-school video game commercials and all!

http://videogamecritic.net/ - Reviews for everything retro-current complete with grading and screenshots.

http://www.vgmuseum.com - A load of screenshots for most games on all(?) systems.

Who here played Spyro or Crash Bandicoot as a kid? And I really need to try out Super Metroid, I've never heard a bad thing about it.

All the time. =D I've completed Crash Bandicoot 2 twice, and Spyro 3 four times. Both of them are still in my Top 10 video games, Spyro's probably in my Top 5. I would say they're better than some of the big shoot-em-up games nowadays, such as Halo and Call Of Duty. I play video games to escape reality, not simulate it. And if I wanted to simulate it, I wouldn't want to simulate war.

3 reviewers/collectors I shouldn't have left out:

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheLastGamertube - Probably the largest collection on youtube he even has his own arcade!

http://www.youtube.com/user/Gamester81 - Massive collection! one of the largest I've seen.

http://www.youtube.com/user/SteveBenway - owner of   http://www.retrogamingcollector.com has a huge collection including   retro computers! and seems to be very knowledgeable and well-spoken.

Yey. I've completed every Spyro game in original trilogy, Crash 2 and Spyro 5 (4 was a glitchy, unfinished mess). I wouldn't consider Spyro 3 the best game of all time, but it definitely is my favourite of all time. Playing that game always puts me in a good mood.

doom was in mine too along with duke 3d and a little wolfenstein 3d, it came a tad later then most my previously posted gaming memories though.

My most loved games have all got some great customisation in them like 4d boxing, 4d driving (which I knew only as stunts) and even newer games like robot arena 2 and jade cocoon. 3D movie maker is probably my most played game of all time (not my fav though) I spent ages (literally ages..) on that making movies and watching other movies from people in the community, it had a pretty large community with loads of sites and tonnes of movies.

I thought Twinsanity was Ok. It's when Crash of the titans came along when the series took a major turn for the worse IMO.

Grab a copy of Baldur's Gate 2 if you like RPGs

As for me, my childhood mostly consisted of LoZ: Ocarina Of Time and Hot Wheels: Turbo Racing, but my favorite classic games are Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Age Of Empires 2 (this game probably defines gaming in my childhood), MGS, and Mario Kart 64.

Pity it started going downhill after the wrath of cortex.

Wrath of Cortex was the first Crash Bandicoot game that was made after Naughty Dog left Universal Interactive Studios, who still owned the rights to the Crash Bandicoot franchise. That probably had something to do with it.

My childhood was spent with my mom's NES and the three SMB games. I finally finished SMB3 a few months ago (it was the GBA remake sadly, we sold the NES for a Gamecube a long time ago)

The 3 games that made up most of my childhood were RA2, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and Need for Speed III. All for PC.

All these came close:

Driver - PC
Doom - PC
Silent Hill 2 - PS2
Grand Theft Auto III - PS2
Microsoft Train Simulator - PC

And a bunch of other games I'm too lazy to post/can't remember.
