Worst: Making a sequel that could just be DLC (Halo: ODST).
Best: Download-only games that are awesome (Monday Night Combat, Toy Soldiers).

-Storylines written by professional writers
-The Platformer & Adventure genres
- Bright Colours (brown & grey palates suck)
- Shoutouts to retro games

Worst
-Movie-based games
-Casual Games
-Unnecessary overuse of the Wiimote
-Repackaging the same game (I'm looking at you, Animal Crossing)
- Mr. Resetti (Not a trend yet; pray to C'thulu it stays that way)
-Unskippable Cutscenes

Games that pushed the envelope of acceptable content.

Like:

1988... If you beat the game you got to see the main bad guys face explode in wonderful 8 bit bloody gore.

Night Trap http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Trap#Controversy
1992's controversial Sega CD release in which you had to protect a house full of coed girls from slow-moving zombie vampires by triggering traps within the house while spying via hidden cameras in the walls. (bathroom included)

Doom http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_%28video_game%29
1993... The first-person shooter that launched the genre into the stratosphere.

Honorable mention to Duke Nukem in 96 for the same reasons.

Worst:

The death of adventure games (i.e. Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Police Quest, etc etc)

Best trends:
Where you can actually destroy the environment your character is currently in.
No really, the whole 'Your Lightsaber can only cut through [X], [Y], and [Z], despite the fact [A], [.B], and [C] are made of the same material' is total BS.

Worst trends:
~~LETTING 8 YEAR OLDS PLAY ONLINE~~
Games that dont give you some kind of god-like power or character/feature when you get 100% on the game.
Look, I want to be rewarded for my hard work.

Though to be honest, Ive actually been playing Wii 'Just Dance', and recently started playing 'Just Dance 2'.

I don't think it's fair to tar all Wii games like that. The motion controls are hard for designers to work with, and cross-console games usually suffer, I'll grant you.

But at the same time, there are plenty of devs who know what they're doing, and are able to make a truly great game without over-dependence on the motion sensitivity.

You've got to be shrewd, and know the difference between a game that's primarily game, and a game that's primarily a gimmick-exploiter of the Wii's motion controls

Games being released to PS3 and Xbox 360, but not the Wii. I mean, come on Capcom! What is the problem with releasing Super Street Fighter 4 on Wii?

The 3DS proved that it could run it effectively, so why not?
