BUMP!

I HATE zero tolerance in schools. Kids have been suspended and expelled from schools because they brought in a 'dangerous weapon'. Here are some examples:

* A third grade girl was suspended for bringing a knife with a cake for her birthday.

* A six year old boy brought in a Cub Scouts dinner knife for school and was suspended and sent to a reform school for 45 days (9 weeks).

* An 11-year-old died of asthma because his school's zero tolerance policy prevented him from carrying an inhaler.

* A student in Manassas, Va was suspended for giving his friend a breath mint.

I know that some parts of zero tolerance are important, like no guns and drugs (crack, cocaine, pot, etc.), but some schools take it TOO FAR!!

WAT? I can understand that bringing knifes could be bad, but no need for such harsh countermeasures!

Seriously what were they thinking on not letting that 11 year old cary his inhaler. They tought he had some sort of drug hidden in it or what?

Sometimes it seems like most of who decide things have and IQ of less than 60!

Suspended for a CAKE knife? If you rammed that into someone's eye it wouldn't do any permanent damage!

I'd like some citations for all of those examples.

Okay, here they are.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/12/education/12discipline.html

http://www.buildingblocksforyouth.org/issues/zerotolerance/facts.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_tolerance_(schools)

Based on the facts presented in the first source, the kid probably shouldn't have received that harsh of a punishment. At that age, educating the child as to why that's a bad idea would be more useful.

The other two links you provided aren't very legitimate. The building blocks source has a clear bias and doesn't properly cite its sources. Wikipedia is sometimes a good basic source, but this article doesn't look particularly well put together. I'm very surprised it hasn't been slapped with a POV tag.

Don't get me wrong in all this. Zero Tolerance is bullsh**. Everything should be on a case-by-case basis (including possession of drugs and such). However, that doesn't mean that we should try to persuade people using unverified circumstantial evidence. There is plenty of empirical evidence showing that Zero Tolerance policies are ineffective. Stick with that. It's stronger evidence, and can be easily verified.
