A fear of anything that could easily kill you is a rational fear. It isn't necessary, but it is rational nonetheless.

But is there anything rational about fearing death?
Though it may be true that only the one who lives forever never fears dying, if the ultimate of life is to enjoy it, why should we fear anything at all?

A fear of death comes from a fear of the unknown. No one knows what happens after people die, where their consciousness goes, etc - because no one's ever lived to tell the tale.
