Survival of the Fittest (testing the waters)
« on: April 07, 2010, 05:59:48 PM »
So, weird idea for a tournament here.  Just wanting to see what kind of interest there would be in it.  I haven't decided yet if i want to run it or not, but am curious about the reaction it would get.

Anyway, instead of submitting one bot, each entrant would submit a team of bots, consisting of an antweight, beetleweight, lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight.

Matches are team matches.  It starts out with the AW and the BW of a team facing off against the AW and BW of the other.  As soon as one bot is eliminated, the match is stopped.  A new match is started with the next weightclass bot replacing the one that got eliminated.  So on and so forth until one team is out of bots.

In the event of time running out, the bot with the lowest point total is the one eliminated.
In the highly unlikely event of a tie, whether 2 bots being eliminated at the exact same time or 2 bots at the end of the match being tied for lowest points, both bots are eliminated.

Comments? Further ideas? yay or nay?

Good idea, bad timing. You have not been here long enough to run a tourney. Wait a little while, at least until BBEANS is over, maybe longer.

Oh, it'll be quite some time before this gets going.  Again, i'm just seeing the reaction to the basic premise right now.

I like the idea... Especially if somebody makes a LW that could actually make it all the way through the bracket to the SHW  :3

Downfall would be the insane amount of videos to record. If you do it I recommend keeping the entry limit to 16 people maybe? That way you don't overwork yourself for a first tourney.  It sounds like a great idea.  If anything... I think you should make it optional for people to make the HW and SHW... that way the overconfident uber builders can tempt fate by only entering bots for the lower weight classes in hopes of winning.

Or, here's a random thought... maybe the ability to build a SHW could be used as a handicap offset for the noob players?

I think that would be a can of worms. Trying to decide who is noob or not. Example: Am I a noob? I have only been here for two months.

Just stuff like that that could be a problem.

(Don't change subject of thread to who is a noob and who isn't. It was just a hypothetical question)

Yea it could be the difference with the n00b thing that could cause problems. It could be a Reier (arriving with something like MDIII) against an Avalanche (been here a while without much success).

After a little more testing, I think i might even drop it down to teams of 3 (LW, MW, HW)  to cut down on the time of each match.  Easier on me, and on the entrants as well, not to mention it starts getting a bit boring with 6 bots per team.    Might even be better to make it rumble matches, with 4 teams going in one battle. start with all lw's, and continue from there.

and yeah, definately keep the number of entrants low on this

4 way rumble of 3 bots does sound a lot better

easier on builder block too :P

that way 16 is also not an immense number

So is this like everyone builds 6 robots (1 in each class) or is this like 6 user get thogether as a team an everyone builds 1 robot?

If these are rumbles this is going to be spammed with flail shell spinners and SnS.

I'd rather it be each entrant does his own team.  I've noticed some people are really good at heavyweights, but not so good with lightweights.  It's a chance to kind of branch out and get out of comfort zones.

If these are rumbles this is going to be spammed with flail shell spinners and SnS.

Maybe put some restrictions on it.  1 shell spinner/sns per team?  maybe even ban them entirely, even though I don't like the idea of flat out banning a bot type,  I want to see variety in this more than anything.

Oh, and....
