Jack Daniels' Showcase
« on: October 01, 2009, 09:21:38 PM »
It is about time I started a showcase...

I guess I will start things off with my Jousting Bot submission for KOK.  I aimed for super-fast and stable. The rear plow keeps the bot pinned to the ground.

Sir Robin the Brave:

Feedback is fine... though I will not change anything at this point because it is already submitted and AIed for the tourney. But thanks for any comments!

well named !

The Ballad of Brave Sir Robin
Bravely bold Sir Robin rode forth from Camelot.
He was not afraid to die, O brave Sir Robin!
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways,
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin!

He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken;
To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away;
And his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Sir Robin!

His head smashed in and his heart cut out
And his liver removed and his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped and his bottom burned off
And his pen--
...
Brave Sir Robin ran away.
Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin!

Yes, in case you don't know what a side hammer is.

Thanks for your feedback on Sir Robin the Brave.

Heh, Sage... you should know me better than that! I usually fill up to the max weight on my bots, I just didn't for the joust bot because it is a fun tournament and I didn't really want to invest a ton of time into it.

I guess the best way to proceed with my showcase is to show current stuff that represents my building now. Though, I do want to showcase some of my favorite bots that I have built over the years.

Tronbot: Ineffective hammer. I had built it with irons at first, it did more damage, but I did not like how it looked.  I was trying to use a unique chassis and origami all the components together for "wow" factor in the splash.  Got one vote (thanks S32!). haha

Kill Rave: I am insanely shocked how good the bots were in the Robot Design contest this time around.  I put about 4 solid hours of time into stacking the board in the battery just right.  Took about another 4 hours to build the bot after that.  I am soooooo looking forward to the next contest though. I want to step up my game and try to win!

Kill Rave is very effective in combat and holds up well against a good amount of Starcore 3 bots.  The lower tribar clips bots nicely to trim away wedges or knock them off balance to send them upwards.

The most amusing part is that half of the bot is built off of one T connector in the very center between the plows. If that T connector gets damaged enough... most of the bot falls off and it is a sitting duck.  I also somehow managed to mount a baseplate anchor 1/2 inside another one... it gave me an extra mounting point to fill up the weight of the bot and add the horizontal HPz.

Kill Rave is insanely cool. I love the plow setup. I just wish there was a way to get those side plows back a little more so they line up with the corners of the front ones.

For once the mods did something right

Thanks Kill343! I appreciate the compliment. I agree, it would be great to position the plows further back. I tried quite a bit to accomplish this, but I had hit the extender limit on that portion and could not get a good enough combo to keep them straight, and level with the wedges and wheels.  The bottom of the bot is very flat on all points for maximum ground hugging... I tend to to this with a lot of my bots.

Here is my RAW2 multibot entry:

Beavis and Butthead:  Obvious heavy inspiration from Insult to Injury's uncanny success in BBEANS.  I wanted my team to be able to thwart attacks from popups and also refrain from doing damage to each other.  Oddly enough, after a bunch of testing, Insult's general design seemed like a good idea to go with.  My only gripe with these bots is that their drive setup is rather slow.  I should have spent more time trying to cram better drive motors in there, but i rushed to meet the RAW2 deadline.

I might re-work these two and make them more effective... I should find a way to shrink the chassis some more and give them a more powerful/faster drive setup.  Of course, if they totally fail in the tournament... I might just ditch the idea altogether.

It fares well in most of the tests that I have run for them. My copy of Starcore 3 screwed up so I wasn't able to test the pair against decent competitors on that level.  I think alot of the success of this pair going to depend on luck and the AI responses.

The other thing that occurred to me is that Insult to Injury was a very heavy bot... and perhaps that is a good reason why it had such good success getting under wedges. These two MiddleWeights may not fare as well though... I guess we shall see.

Here is a splash of my Doomed Bots entry:

I built Guybrush about 2 years ago. It has a nice balance to it.
Obvious flaws are: Too much empty space... not enough weapons... poor choice of wheels. I probably will make a new version of this bot because it has always been one of my favorite designs. Mainly, I like the srimech on the bot (HpZ motors swing upward to flip the bot over).  It also seems to do well against popups because the bot is long, and I think it trips off smartzones quicker protecting the chassis better. I am not entirely sure about that though.

Building a newer/better version of Guybrush will probably be my next goal.

new popups Are activated by the Chassis only, so it's now a really old design...
Put this onto your signature if you were part of this crappy fad in '03.

I really don't want to create another thread for DSL bots only because I don't forsee myself making a ton of DSL bots.  So, I am going to cheat and show my old stock bot in this splash as a comparison! :P

This is my entry for the Replica tournament.

Crabmeat:

Pros: Decent Pusher, Pretty durable, Nice battery life, So-so Rammer...

Cons: No srimech. Once it is flipped over, the match is pretty much over folks! Just like the actual bot. How is that for realism huh? I never quite understood what the actual benefits to the real life design were. From what I have watched on battlebots and youtube... it doesn't put up a very good fight. But hey! I don't really care about winning much, so I wanted to see Crabmeat bounce around and have some fun.

Back Story: I made the original (stock) crabmeat about 2 years ago. I crafted the extenders around the chassis to make it look like a cage. For the DSL version I left the extenders out and focused on the insides so that I could make it somewhat combat effective as a wedge-rammer.  If I were to reskin the wheels, it would look pretty close to the real bot.

Not combat effective but a good replica.  Tornado wheels would fit better, I think.

The most recent version of Crab Meat that I saw had L-shaped forks on axles, so that when bots went up the forks, they would hit the back and therefore Crab Meat could lift bots with nothing more than their own momentum.  I thought it was pretty clever.  Tried to do it in RA2, but haven't had much success... maybe you can do better.

Dang Boxing gloves don't do very much damage.

yes you could go the generic option, but I think JD was after a similar effect to the original boxer rather then just turning a chassis into a common stock robot.
