The Lego Robotics thread
« on: April 26, 2014, 11:19:39 AM »
Well I did mention in the Lego Robot Wars thread something about me buying some Lego motors, but what I didn't mention me making some bots, we'll here are some:
An old design, still proud of it though

And here is the later version, OF WHICH I made today :D :

(Please excuse the backgrounds)

What are your thoughts?
Also, feel free to post any Lego robot things you like :)

Niiice, always liked the claw robots

Edit: can never seem to get a powerful enough weapon, I definately need some more parts for armour as well as the weapon.

Edit 2: what motor would be best for a flipper?

Definitely 2 XL motors, to make all motors even more powerful, buy the rechargeable battery packs.

Update (Now with flipper!)

Front:

Back:

Flip:

Good:
Fast
Can Self right
Good flipping ability
Sharp wedge damages other bits
Bad:
Flipper is inefficient

Also another note: I forgot to mention I can make this do wheelies in its base chassis as well as with the flipper.

Any thoughts towards it?

I had the privilege of toying with some Lego Mindstorms about fourteen years ago or so. I was on one of the inaugural high school teams that adopted the "Mindstorms curriculum". :P My knowledge in the field of radio controlled robotics pretty much got me a "bye" into the high school team; I had been the event organizer of a robot combat event series at the middle school so the instructor who was in charge of the Mindstorms ended up "using" me as a way to add some legitimacy to the club and to hopefully attract former competitors from my event.

The issue here is that he recruited me -- someone whose experience in the field of robotics and radio-controlled hobbies consisted entirely of combat -- to stir up interest in a robotics club that was the complete opposite: autonomous task completion.

I hated it so much, however that did not stop me from remaining with the club simply to build Lego versions of combat robots. The instructor asked for "Twilight Foundry" and he got it; it was during this period of time I built the first version of the famed "Tha Thumperizer": https://wiki.gametechmods.com/index.php?title=File:THUMP!.JPG

Unfortunately, that's the best and only picture I have of the robot. The inaugural Thumperizer was not a combat robot since the "event" it was meant to compete at did not allow combat. Instead, it was programmed by a second team member to perform some gyroscopic stunts and flips while the RCX played a hip-hop music loop that a third teammate wrote. Thumperizer was put into an open class for "show bots" and wowed the meager audience with its spectacle. I'm not going to upsell it, the first/Lego Thumperizer sucked. It only served to fuel a design I eventually wanted to pursue in actual combat but was never able to build, sadly.

The rest of my Lego robots don't have pictures, I only have stories to tell about them instead. Since this thread is for pics I won't bore you with tales of high school-aged me being a complete ass.
The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

There's an exclamation point in the URL (because the sticker on the side of the robot says "THUMP!") so it looks like it's a broken link unless you manually copy and paste it. D:

Finally can get a link set up for all you to get your own parts if you want, remember to change it to your own nation
Lego: Pick a brick

To look for the motors, there's a search tab in the top right, search for:

Lego Power Functions Motors

and they should pop up

A quick question, do you reckon it is possible to make an axe with that wedge design?

Edit: Also, have you got any name suggestions for my flipper?

I was thinking about that, but that means The front will be a bit bulky, I'm ordering some M motors soon though, should I wait?

Nice, I shall look into these, also does anyone want me to do a tutorial on how to make a strong bot design?

Should we collaborate? You seem to have a different building method to me, I build for destruction and use old technic bricks, whereas you seem to use new-technic and are building for strength.
Also, what weight are they? There are two, Lightweights (My class - 500g) and Heavyweights (The original - 850g). If it's a heavy, you way want to gear your motors down for power in the flipper rather than speed. Otherwise, good.

EDIT: No, wait, that has to be heavy. You need two use two batteries for 4xl motors, as one battery powers four m motors or two xl motors. I'm guessing around 650g?
