Yes I agree about that, the only really innovative robots were Nightmare (HUGE DISC), Warhead (although British), Run Amok (for it's epicness) and Diesector (for its epic clamp)
Vlad The Impaler had the first Self-Righting Mechanism, IIRC. It used a pneumatic piston to kick itself back over onto its wheels after Biohazard had overturned it. It didn't win, though, but I'd still say that quantifies innovation.

JUST PUTTING THIS OUT THERE, but Tough As Nails is my favourite robot of all time. It's absolutely beautifully designed and I loved watching it in action. And it looked really, really cool.
I agree that it was a very well-engineered robot, and a great piece of design, but it could have put on a better show during its matches, rather than the clamp-and-pit tactics.
Oddly, Crushtacean used broadly similar tactics, why has no-one been going on about that one?
