I wanna make a featherweight thats not butt
« on: May 23, 2018, 02:45:06 PM »
Hi guys, Ecolusian back once again to make sure that your not all babbling cavemen but this time I have new questions based on a whole bunch of guff, the main question which all the other ones branch from is how do I make a proper featherweight robot? I have an Extreme robots schedule that shows me how I can make a wooden robot but I'm concerned that might be a little too trash (at least for going to the small tournament events) which brings me onto the following questions, how cheap is plastic compared to wood and whats the best budget version I could use and I think the final question, for now, is what would be the best way to make a full body spinner or at least a decent spinning weapon (think wedged spinners). ill still have a look at the wooden featherweight bot stuff but id rather have a plastic spinner bot for practice and a way to mabey win a tourney or 2.

For plastics, you should look at HDPE or UHMW. They'll be more expensive than wood, but will be miles better in terms of performance. A simple wood wedge stands no chance, a simple HDPE/UHMW wedge can withstand a ton of punishment. It will be more expensive but should save you money of your internals getting chucked across the arena repeatedly. HDPE is cheap, and can sometimes be bought as cutting boards at shops. UHMW is slightly stiffer, slightly tougher, and fairly pricier. Because it's worth saying also, 3D printing is irrelevant at the featherweight scale for structure or armor. For internal supports and guards, it's nice.

For spinning weapons, you'll probably want some kind of metal supports, especially in the featherweight class. You'll need the ability to make or modify pulleys, the ability to make a balanced spinning weapon, and aligned weapon supports so it can run freely. These are all hard to get without precision tools, or without paying shops to make the parts. I think you're at the level where it would do you well to check out the Riobotz design guide and poke around on the FRA forums or facebook groups just to pick up some common practices and design styles.

This isn't the most beginner guide to building things, but it is the most extensive!

I'd never recommend doing a spinner to start with as your first bot.

In terms of feather construction, 20mm HDPE walls and 10mm HDPE base/lid are sufficient. Motors from Argos drills are great for drive. FeatherTwos are good speed controllers, available from Nuts and Bots. My feather in all, not including radio kit or charger which I already had, cost around £200.

Consequently, I did a spinner as my first robot. And second and third and literally everything I've ever built has been a vertical spinner. And I can back up the advice not to do one as a first robot. Even then, vertical spinners are still significantly easier to design and make than a shell spinner.

Thank you very much for the help guys, tbh I would settle for making an lifter/flipper as my first bot or at the very least some way to weaponise a servo since they seem like cheap and easy weapon motors

Servos will be used up to Beetleweights, you almost certainly won't be able to make a lifter using one in a Feather.

ahh okay, what would i use for a lifting/flipping weapon then? i imagine linear actuators would be too expensive

Linear actuators can be used, and a motor with a significant amount of gear reduction has been used as well.

As someone who made a wooden robot, I can vouch for them not doing well. Also as someone who is currently building a FW with a linear actuator as the weapon motor I'd say they're pretty bulky and limited. I wouldn't say they're too expensive for what you get though (Mine was £60)

Remember you can get hardox waterjet for surprisingly cheap if you're in the UK. That's a strong front wedge right there.

what about ramming spikes or a scoop?

I don't see why not. All a good start point.

what about ramming spikes or a scoop?

scoop is fine, you can make it active too. If you, like the ENTIRE REST OF GTM overestimate spikes, we can negotiate. Put the spikes on a hinge. It is an extremely successful design. It makes a very good wedge. They have been used from Antweight (1lb) example:‘Slim Pickens’ (nudge nudge Natef) to 250 lbs. example: Blacksmith

yeah, i like the idea of a pronged lifting wedge, what would be the best motor for such an aparatus?

Never built a 30, just recommending the weapon type. Look up Nyx for inspiration.

TL,DR: idk.

Edit: didn’t really need tldr

I would just use a linear actuator for it. It doesn't really need to be a fast it just has to be able to lift.
I wouldnt take advice from me though as although I currently own a bot I dont actually know much in the way of feather weights

Linear actuators. Charles Guan's deWut kit. RS-775 motor into a Banebots Speed 57 or a Versaplanetary v2. Just gotta do the math to get your gearing set and make sure you have the grunt to lift a bot. Otherwise the smoke comes out.

Riobotz Guide will have some formulas for you to do this math.
