Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Combat Robot Hall of Fame« on: September 05, 2013, 03:50:24 PM »You're only thinking of one factor the hall is based off. According to the call of fame, there are four:Original Sin maybe? It was successful, but did it pioneer anything? Was it something new and creative? 1) Dominating success in combat 2) Pioneering or perfecting influential designs 3) Having great fan or entertainment appeal 4) Otherwise making a lasting impact on the sport So Explosion / Eruption would qualify for 1 and 3, and I suppose 4 to a certain extent. Obviously I don't know as much about Original Sin but 1 and possibly 4? With regards to point 2, Explosion did "pioneer" Hardox on featherweight non-boxes, and I suppose if I was clutching at straws it perfected that particular design of flipper that's not the typical "pure wedge" shape. But I admit these are a little bit far fetched :P 5
Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Combat Robot Hall of Fame« on: September 05, 2013, 10:54:58 AM »Explosion will probably become a legend when it retires anywho..I can personally guarantee that is never going to happen :D 6

I understand what you mean Joe. I've thought about it myself before and the reason is basically because it is so less well known than it used to be and as a result the few remaining communities of roboteers have "split off" (meaning there are far less international connections than there used to be).
I don't know of most of the American robots because I don't follow roboteering in America that much (have to spend too much time focusing on roboteering over here!). Similarly everyone in America won't know many of the robots over here, so the initial reaction is to question why a robot that you don't consider famous got inducted. That's why I'm so honored to get Explosion inducted, as a considerable amount of American/Australian roboteers value a robot that essentially has nothing to do with them enough to vote for it! (God know's why). I all depends really what you consider to be the definition of famous that the hall of fame should run by. Either how well known/valued a robot is within the entire population of the planet or how well known/valued a robot is among the people who actually care about roboteering. 7

I don't have any literal "control" but influence in the sense that we have quite a lot to do with the two major EO's so I suppose my opinion is respected and regarded. But there's no way that I'm going to request spinners at the main events. 8

Not to the extent of those examples, but essentially yes. Except for the main competition (Newport this year).

We're always trying to encourage variety, but when people are spending thousands on robots they're almost always going to build the most competitive design, and you can't really blame them for that. As regards to our team, we have our two competitive robots, Explosion and Eruption. We have now contemplating building a few other robots of a different design. This year already saw the introduction of Combustion at the GSL (FW spinner), which didn't go so well so is currently being rebuilt. We are then looking to build a FW axe, and then do what we did with Explosion and scale it up to a heavyweight. 10

...and yet shows are still selling out. The shows are still entertaining and Robot Wars in the UK is at it's hight of popularity since the TV show ended. The crowds don't find flippers boring at all so it doesn't really seem to be an issue.
Whilst everyone seems to think spinners are a great idea and are really entertaining, from a show point of view, there are three things to consider: 1. Spinners make for really short fights a lot of the time. When an audience has payed to see a show, they want to see three minute fights, not really short ones. Over here fight lengths have become much longer since the addition of cages and ropes. 2. They result in a lot of destruction of other robots which makes running a show difficult. Destruction is much more apt for a competition rather than entertainment. 3. They result in a lot of boxes being built. The major complaint in the UK is to do with featherweights, and the large abundance of weaponless boxes. If flippers are dull, boxes are REALLY dull. You've got to admit that fights such as Eruption vs Iron Awe or Ripper or any other flipper are more entertaining than Sewer Snake vs Original Sin. As for crushers, they result in the same three things, except there is no entertainment at all. Razer was made to look exciting on TV by very clever production. Tiberius putting its claw into a robot causes a lot of damage, but there is no sparks, no noise, and it looks very boring from a crowds point of view. Axes are entertaining because they are fast and loud, whereas crushers tend to be too slow and 'boring' to be entertaining. 11

I suppose it is less conventional, but it's not that new. It was the Disturbed for a few years before it became Rattler.

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: robot wars webseries« on: August 26, 2013, 03:26:40 AM »
We're always encouraging more variety but that's a hard thing to do. At the end of the day when people are spending thousands on heavies they're going to build what they want :P People want to win and so they build flippers.

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: robot wars webseries« on: August 26, 2013, 03:08:03 AM »
There will be one for each event. The Portsmouth one will be coming soon.
The commentator isn't the best but unfortunately he's the only person who has the time to do it so there isn't much choice. As for the flippers are boring, bring back spinners comment that arises in almost every thread about the UK, there are three main points. 1. Shows are still selling out. Until it becomes a problem, as harsh as it sounds, nobody is going to care if a small group of people don't enjoy the fights. It's only the people who pay to come to the events rather than watching it for free on youtube who's opinion is heard, as they are the people who support us. 2. The cost of making a spinner proof arena is monumental. 3. There are too many events to have spinners. Next year there will be 12 full Robot Wars shows alone, plus Robots Live and all the demo shows like we've just done in Tyneside. If you were a roboteer would you have the time and money to completely rebuild your robots after every event? 17

Thanks for voting guys! You lot are basically the pool of voters I have up on other roboteers so you probably swung it my way.
Its funny I only realised on the Friday when Explosion was mentioned in the middle of a fight as a new member of the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately the initial celebration wasn't much as I was concentrating driving :P 18
