Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Dragon Con Robot Battles 2014
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:45:57 PM »
Quick and rough rundown on how the bots did at Robot Battles-
Algos: 2nd place, in need of weapon repairs.
Klazo: T-3rd place, needs a new drive gearbox, otherwise seems to be in good shape.
Reptar: T-5th place, needs a new flipper plate at a minimum, may get a moderate to major redesign.
Gelos: Lost to Algos in the first round. Special guest driver- MassimoV.
Hypnus: Out in the first round.
Dolos: T-3rd place, worked well overall.
Spanky: Out in the first round to Overthruster.
Nyx: T-3rd place, lost to Uberclocker and officially retired, with the new version on the way shortly.

Video coming soon.

Modifications / Re: Robot Wars RA2 - OFFICIAL MOD

Thanks lads!

Sonny, I would just like to make the chassis lower than the slider can manage but I want to know if the lowered chassis would still work using higher quality graphics.

As far as I know, the only thing that gets messed up when BFEing the chassis height lower is that the graphics on the side get vertically compressed, so you'd need to stretch the initial image vertically to compensate for the vertical compression once it's in game. What I'm fairly sure is happening is that the graphics area isn't updated for the new vertical dimension, so it'll import the same area, but then it's applied to a shorter area, resulting in the compression. Easy way to compensate would be to do the graphic normally, scale to the proper width, then vertically stretch it to the height RA2 thinks the graphic should be.

The real bot is being built to the 30lb Sportsman/Dragon Con rules

Reprinted at 1/5 scale, did the lifter version as well-

New merch?

Maybe but not likely. The 1/5 scale version is a 5.5 hour print job not including the axe/torque clutch. Planning to print one with each weapon assembly on it. May do a few commissioned bot prints, but that's about it.

I printed a thing-

Planning to up the size a bit and print with the axe separated then pin it in so it can rotate. Gonna do up the crusher and lifter versions as well.

I think Killerhurtz had one of those trigger-based toys or something, didn't it? I remember re-issues of the toys having things like battle damage and such, I would venture a guess that the robots that won awards would also have had toy versions of them included to add to their collectability.

Those came with some of the Battlebots toys. I think I've got one around somewhere, but I haven't seen the thing in ages. Might be worth a buck or two.

Real Robotics Discussion / Dragon Con Robot Battles 2014

Since 1991, Robot Battles has been staging robotic combat competitions around the United States, with annual events currently held in Chattanooga, Tennessee at Chattacon, in Atlanta at Dragon*Con, and near Nashville, Tennessee at the Geek Media Expo. Past events have been staged events in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina and Colorado.

Robot Battles is one of the oldest continuously running robotic combat competitions in the world, and is a direct descendant of the oldest still running robotic event: the "Critter Crunch" held every year at MileHiCon in Denver, Colorado.

So what makes Robot Battles different? Well, we don't have a TV show, we don't have supermodels, and we don't have huge cash prizes. What we do have is a creatively unique host, some of the most imaginative builders around, and the most involved audiences in the country. You never know what to expect, so be sure to get a good seat and enjoy!

Our next competition, Robot Battles 50, will be held at the DragonCon convention over the Labor Day Weekend. This is our biggest competition of the year, spread out over two days. The Microbattles event (featuring the one pound Antweights and three pound Beetleweights in an enclosed arena) will be held on Sunday, August 31 and the Main Event (featuring the 12 and 30 pound robots in a larger-scale sumo combat environment) will be held on Monday, September 1.

Robot Battles is what I consider one of my big two events each year, the other being Motorama. The event is great fun and both days have absolutely massive (At least 1,500 people at any one time) crowds. I'll be bringing the whole fleet as usual and Near Chaos Robotics will be defending the 1lb, 12lb and 30lb titles again.

Mmm, looks nice. How well does it work?

Won't know for a bit, not gutting the current Nyx until after Dragon Con, so I'm mostly pre-building where possible.

Nice axe. I also like the one with the spike strips because it looks like a cross between an angled bracket and spike strips from RA2.

I'm looking to get into robotics (general robotics, not just combat). Is a high school robotics club a good place to start?

Yeah, unless it's a botsIQ/NRL club, it'll probably have some of the focus shifted toward programming/AI, but still well worth it. I did USFirst for three years in high school and it was well worth it.

Did you mean to make it look like a elder scrolls axe, also do you have any examples of other weapons you've made.

That wasn't explicitly the goal. Triangles are very strong from a structural standpoint and I wanted to keep the strength up but the weight down, so that resulted in the triangular pattern on the hammer arm. The head's designed to put as much of the total mass as possible out by the tip, so for the same weight and speed it'll be able to hit harder.

Here's some of the other parts from the same batch:

Axe is up top, lifter arm's on the left, crusher parts are on the right, and at the bottom is a bar for a partially designed 3lb last rites-ish spinner.

That's pretty cool, how did you make the elder scrolls axe?

It was cut on a waterjet. Material is 1/4" thick AR400 steel.

How sharp s each end, and what kind of force do they hit with?

Axe side has a sharp but relatively thick end, spike's got about a 1/16" wide tip with a sharp edge. I've managed to nearly punch through 1/8" 6061 aluminum swinging it by hand, so I suspect the mag can do a fair bit better than that. Energy calculations say it should be able to hit about as hard as a .22lr pistol.

Spike side is the primary side, but the blade side should be good for semi-blunt impact.
