Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Music ATM
« on: June 12, 2016, 08:02:27 PM »
I think, because their stuff turns into pop when they start singing, they picked the songs that have the least singing in for more metal. However, that still has an adverse effect because they're doing their dances and stuff when they aren't singing but us metalheads don't really take interest in that.

What I had the most qualms with was the surprising lack of emphasis on anything. The singing was lacklustre, the instrumental backings were terribly generic/lacklustre and the dancing was bland, even for a metal-centric festival.

Got both bots, they're AI'ed and the match has been recorded but I'll edit it tomorrow because I'm tired.

Lots has changed since 2010 then? Any upcoming tournaments this year or is the attention turning to RA3 now?
Nothing is ever really 'upcoming' because anyone can host a tournament at any time. If you wanna see what tournaments are in the works, currently accepting entrants/in sign-ups or are already underway, have a look at the Tournament section and see for yourself. I don't know who was the tournament mod back in 2010 but, if you have any more questions in that area, feel free to ask me.

Attention is definitely not turning to RA3 due to the state it's in, so I'd say it's a safe bet to focus on your RA2 building skills for RA2 tournaments :P

I thought it was something to enter new and strange designs, not DSL unrealistic.
I'm not sure of his intention but I know that's what he said the premise for Bizzaro World is. Unless you're talking about your first impressions on the name.

I feel that the RA2T#2 is too small for DSL HW. Not really a fan of single elimination coupled woth BO1s.

I assume you're talking about the rule of 7. I forgot about that because I worked off the template which didn't know of it's existence back then :P I think I'll ban it, for now. Perhaps I'll allow it, if enough people want it that badly.
There's also two more parts to component freedom now. One disables component collison entirely, and the other let's you attach whatever you want to anything. I'd probably ban those two and let the RO7 bypass in.

Aside from that, I'd probably join. Haven't seen a unrealistic dsl tournament in awhile.
I see. Yeah, component freedom is completely barred but, considering the name and what Nary said, I may let the RO7 breaker slide. As for the arena, I'll do some test fights and I'll see what I think of it. If I still think it's suitable, you won't hear anything from me. And, as for single elimination BO1, I may change that to double elimination but still BO1 because my attention span wavers in bot matches. Thracker's most recent tournament has been the only one in which I watch the whole matches all the way through :P I really do prefer fast paced games. I, sometimes, feel that matches can drag on.

Tournament Archives / Bizarro World - Signups

Building rules:
DSL 2.2 - Unrealistic/Stock rules
Weight - HW (up to 800.0kg)
No BFE or any other kind of editing outside of the bot lab, however, as mentioned above, in-game glitches are fine
No cheatbot2
No multibots
There are no limits to how much or how many times you can update your bot after you have submitted one but be wary that the version you send in could be the one I use, if you don't update your robot in time. So, please, be vigilant when making and sending off your bot
Serge's rule of 7 breaker is allowed but no other component freedom

Other rules:
Electric Arena 2 - Hazards off
Swiss layout
3 minute matches
Havok rule - 1 strike results in a restart, 2 strikes and you're out. These havoks have to be game effecting (such as touching the opposing bot whilst havoking or a bot causing damage to itself via havoking) *
Maximum of 8 entries
Feel free to AI your own bot if you wish but I'll AI for you if you can't or won't. If you bot has any specifications in terms of their .py, please attempt to AI it yourself but I will do my best to apply the correct .py.

*If a bot havoks when the outcome of the match is near certain, that will be at my discretion, I will not restart the match and I will award the win to the bot that was about to win.

Entrants:
1. RedAce
2. Thrackerzod
3. DeadGenocide
4. battledutchman
5. Badger
6. Jet-speed
7. playzooki
8. TBD Devastator

Black - Received
Green - Accepted and AI'ed

Great tournament Thrack, definitely one of the most entertaining I've watched.
Definitely this. The quality of the robots was really high compared to some of the later tournaments, for some reason.

Posting on mobile so this may be a little on the wack side. I'll reorganize everything when I get back to a keyboard.

General Rules:
-DSL 2.2
-16 entrants max
-If empty spaces are present after signup close, bye-bots will take the remaing spaces to make a even bracket, and will be from the stock DSL AI
-1v1
-2 minutes matches, Best of 3, double elimination
-DSL Tournament Arena, hazards on
-Multibots are banned
-Meltybrain is banned
-Crawlers, TRFD, trinity spinners, bumble balls, and robots that attempt to create havok explosions are banned
-You cannot enter unless a bot is received and accepted
-I have the right to reject any bot under any condition

Building Rules
-DSL standard
-HW, 399.1-800
-Rule of 7 bypass is allowed
-The other two features of sergepatcher, component intersection and attachment freedom are not
-cheatbot2, stock, and custom components are banned
-All the usual out of game exploits are banned (BFE, AAM, etc)
-Bots must show controlled movement
-At least 2 powered wheels are required
-Smartzones do not add toward's your weight, however they cannot be used as ballasts/mounts and must be Madiaba's smartonzes that are included in 2.2

Other
-Bots get one free havok restart for a game-changing havok that has a major impact on the fight. A second havok will result in a round loss for the offending bot
-One update is allowed per person. This can be as major as a rebuild or as minor as a skin
-I can AI if you are not willing/unable to
-No cheaty .pys
-Builders who AI their own bot can change their robot's AI once and only once during the tournament (smartzone included)
-Zero tolerance for blatantly illegal robots, builders who send an illegal entry will be disqualified from entering another robot. Things that  I would consider blatant would include bfe/aam, custom components, and cheat .pys
-I will be entering with tba

Awards
-The winner and runner up will be awarded with the tournament AI and bots

tldr: it's a DSL-S tournament with no gimmicks

Any other suggestions or ideas you guys have?
This is now a signups topic and the rules quoted mustn't change. You've got 90 days, enjoy! :)

Sounds good to me, just as long as you make it perfectly clear what qualifies as a fast robot.

Although this topic has only recently become inactive and locked, Badger has given the 'okay' to anyone wishing to take this tournament over. If you wish to take on this idea, you needn't contact me or Badger, simply make a new thread about it.

You should be able to add a poll. Once I see Trov back in action a bit more, I'll contact him about it. In the meantime, would you like me to add a poll for you?

Custom Components Showcase / Re: Yugitom's RA3 Masterpieces
« on: June 06, 2016, 06:56:21 PM »
Deadly Teacups (looks better) and Deadly Teacups 2 (much, much better at fighting) respectively:

One motor powers the whole weapon at the base and there are actually motors beneath the top motors that you can see clearly so, I believe, it should have 32 saws but it seems to do much better than the '36hs' I built before. It's got armour that no robot can get through in the allotted battle time, a fun weapon mechanism and is actually reasonably fast/nimble. These are very close favourites next to Vishnu.

Right, I'm actually enjoying RA3. Obviously, it's not in the intended way and I'm rather upset about that but I really don't want to see updates now. If new updates come to make it more realistic, it will end up lacklustre with nothing going for it because the physics will always be bad. I am being very serious when I say that I would be happy if the only update this game got was a smooth multiplayer and nothing else (at least to add to the realism aspect) because it's not salvageable due to the physics, anyway. I'm having fun making these weird designs effortlessly and I genuinely think that RA2 will always be the best place to turn to for a more realistic combat experience (obviously only with self-enforced IRL rules and meta-games like DSL.) The only real updates I'd like to see are weight classes and stuff (possibly with the ability to go over the weight limit without needing the use of anti-ballasts or something) and a career mode that refreshes itself (don't know if this has been mentioned yet but has anyone actually completed all the events in career mode? As far as I know, it's impossible to refresh and start again.)

However, I could be completely wrong (which I hope to be proven, if the devs pursue patching the game.) The physics might be salvageable and updates to the game may be able to overhaul it completely but if realism better than RA2 cannot be achieved, I really don't want to see this game turn in to a snore fest in an attempt to achieve a more realistic experience which will lack when compared to RA2, anyway.

The only reason I'm posting this here is because I felt this reaction after building these two and I believe it to be relevant to the building of the above bots. Perhaps I'll copy and paste my feelings towards the game in the RA3 thread for those who skip over my showcase and/or to continue discussion based on what I have said.

I feel like it's an implied rule that bots are eliminated when they exit the arena.
Not really. The 'rules' for when a robot should be eliminated are inherent in the arena itself. It's just what the arena does and doesn't allow. If Mr AS (or anyone building a robot) built their bot with the specific arena-out zone in mind, it would completely undermine their design. I know that, in this case, Mr AS didn't intend for that (even though he doesn't mind the unintentional result) but if I were to apply this to a future tournament with a similar problem, any given bot builder could have built their bot with the intention of interacting with the arena, so I'll try to keep my decisions consistent.

I highly advise not editing the arena at this time ('this time' being after matches have already been conducted.) You'd be changing the way certain robots perform (I.e. Mr AS's bot) and you'd be changing the rules without permission. By all means, if you think you can make the case to change the arena, make the case.
