They are twice as powerful as the regular, and also consume twice the amount of power.

they dont. the description lies

I think "don't dox anyone" is a pretty common sense rule that we shouldn't really have to write down.

because abs is the paragon of common sense

If you are using the in game multi-player to do your battle, then remember that it's impossible. I think the Gameranger server that hosts RA2 multi-players was already dead, meaning you have to use an outside program to do online play, like Parsec, for example
*Gamespy
but yes you're right.

In between Centauris (8 players) I'm thinking of doing 4 player mini tourneys that I can film in one day (5-6 matches). don't have a name as of yet. Each one can be a different event or the competitors can vote on the subject or whatever. I may enter some of these.

Ideas:

1 hour build-off
Pick a stock ai HW
mystery meta
random arena
fun themes (walker bots etc)
everyone submits a bot and you have to drive someone else's
n00b warz: pvp

Could be fun little tournaments with the potential to be competitive or fairly casual. 4 players is easy to organize and doesn't take long if I'm pressed for time with a full centauri. They would likely be double elim, round robin always kinda bored me.

SPLASH

Congratulations to the winner, Thrackerzod!
Like last time, I mean it when I say everyone did great and made it a blast to host. I really appreciate everyone being respectful and very timely. I would love to host another later this winter after job slows down. Undecided on MW or LW. Stay tuned!

That being said, it's time to give out some awards to recognize the achievements of those you think deserve it. The categories are:
BEST DRIVER for who had the most driving skill, using their bot and the arena to their advantage the best.
BEST DESIGN for the most efficient, well constructed build.
INNOVATIVE DESIGN for which design pushed the limits of building and can inspire the building of others in ways maybe not considered before.
BEST NEWCOMER (evil toaster, Nightraven, Plerco, 090901) for who you think the best newbie was by attitude, performance, etc.
BEST MOMENT for your favorite moment from a match.

C&P:
My votes:

Competitors are encouraged to vote, but you may not vote for yourself. Voting closes in 1 week, 10/15.
Congrats to everyone involved!   :gawe:

Modifications / Re: Ironforge "Unofficial" 1.2 Update
« on: October 08, 2018, 10:49:08 AM »
no servo boost makes me sad...
we tried to no success. for whatever reason the ironforge servo doesn't respond to stat changes at all. it likely has something to do with the axle in the gmf. we thought about adding an additional servo with different dimensions but there is no guarantee that would work so we decided to drop it for the time being and focus on things we knew we could fix.

BY THE WAY: we noticed a minor error. the 30x120 dark armor was actually 40x120. it's been fixed and the downloads in the description were updated to remedy the situation. Just download the patch version and override the components folder and it should be fine.

Modifications / Ironforge 1.2 Update
« on: October 07, 2018, 05:32:17 PM »
Hey everyone. Some of the top Ironforge builders, geice, 090901, and myself have a bit of a surprise for you. For the past week we have been working on an """"unofficial"""" (official) 1.2 update to Ironforge. 123STW, the original creator of Ironforge, has visibly left the community and will be missed. We have attempted to reach out to him asking for his permission to let us to do minor updates but he is MIA. Under those circumstances, we decided to go ahead without explicit permission. (UPDATE: He has PMed me and said it's ok.) We have made several additions and tweaks that we think will improve the building experience for everyone. It seemed to be a good idea to release the patch before we begin to work on Redace's Reforged AI pack update in order to take advantage of these new features and changes. I hope you will enjoy everything.

Ironforge 1.2.1 STANDALONE (Full game, do not need to apply it to a previous Ironforge copy)

Ironforge 1.2.1 PATCH (apply to your existing Ironforge v1.1 game)

---------------

IRONFORGE 1.2 UPDATE LOG

Ant, Mini, and N12 wheels lightened in weight by 50% (roughly).
This was done to encourage the option of using 4WD, especially in lighter weightclasses. Before, wheels were so heavy that 2WD was the only viable option. Now, the torque-weight ratio is basically the same whether you use 2WD or 4WD+. 4WD LW/MWs should be viable now.
The wheels changed still are less efficient than armor panels by a weight-HP ratio. Larger wheels remain unchanged to discourage using them as armor and as due to their size they would likely only be used in HW+ where their weight would not be as much of a factor anyway.

New component - Rubber Wheel
Imported from stock and modified with the Ironforge thin-medium-wide defaults. Ironforge needed an intermediate wheel size between Mini and N12 and here it is. It has weight and HP in line with the other wheels following their weight reduction as well.
1_2rubber.png

Larger wheels and treads now have a small degree of fracture and/or slightly increased HP.
This should hopefully encourage more use of them on larger bots if they are not removed as easily by the opponent. They are still not armor, however.

Treads have had their grip reduced to 0.9 from 1.2.
Small treads especially were nearly straight upgrades from thick wheels due to almost identical grip, weight, but having far higher HP. Hopefully this change should help the treads find their niche as armored wheels instead of an all-around upgrade, especially with the mentioned addition of the small amount of fracture.

All dark and light armor panels have 4 new additional attachment points.
Done to encourage building creativity and a major quality of life change.
1_2armor.png

Car steering and the wide skirt hinge are now able to be attached outside of the chassis. The skirt hinge also has its old version for internal use only.

Heater Skirts/Plow and Treads have all had the flame textures... changed.
Hopefully using these parts should look aesthetically better on more bots now while still being consistent to the style of Ironforge. For those who love 'the meme', the old RADIKOOL flame skins are still available with identical stats as cheatbot2 parts, never fear.
1_2heaters.png

Fixed some minor spelling errors and incorrect information in several descriptions.

---------------

The changes should not penalize existing robots in any meaningful way, the exception being the minor grip nerf of the treads. The biggest change you will likely notice in most bots is that they will now be lighter due to the wheel changes. All other changes exist to hopefully encourage creativity and balance. No other weights or damage values were edited (motors, weapons, etc) so you don't need to worry about bots you've built being suddenly overweight or underpowered. and theres no mechavore disks in ironforge anyway  ;)

Many thanks to 090901 and geice for helping balance and doing most of the gmf work, and to redace for hosting and organization.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Favourite non RA2 Video Game?
« on: October 07, 2018, 02:29:33 PM »
posted this the last few times we had this thread
these are more like top games that have made an impression on my life though, not necessarily favorite ones at the moment.

Game (first played date, not release date)

20. Strike Vector (2013)
Incredibly solid third-person Quake-esque arena shooter with spaceships. Very fast-paced. I haven't played it as much as many of the games on this list, but it left so much of an impression in that time that I had to put it on.
19. Miniclip (2005)
What person in middle school didn't play miniclip (or teagames or nitrome)? This may not count as "a game" but dangit you know what I mean. I KNOW YOU WERE THERE TOO
18. Oregon Trail: 5th Edition (2002)
Played this a ton in grade school. 90 year old Jedidiah and his 5 pre-teen grandkids unfortunately didn't make it to the west coast with their Conestoga full of grandfather clocks most of the time.
17. Pearl Harbor: Zero Hour (2002)
This obscure super-low budget WWII fighter game that I oddly have fond memories of. Very arcadey gameplay. Once you beat level 10 you unlocked BS cheat ships like a Raptor and UFO and had to go on a mission back in time to save Pearl Harbor. I never beat the bonus mission for 10 years and I lost the disk. Fortunately I found an iso like 2 months ago and beat it... it was super lame but I can die happy now and I regret nothing.
16. Champions Online (2011)
The only MMO I have ever played and likely will ever play. Super mindless, but the gameplay is cathartic to me and I will never not like a game with endless stats and character customization.
15. Minecraft (2011)
   I was alive in 2011.
14. Left 4 Dead 2 (2012)
Super solid co-op game. Great fun in college.
13. Depth (2015)
Possibly the only co-op game I would put higher on this list than L4D. It's basically a 4v2 underwater L4D with divers vs sharks. Very fun game and extremely tense. Again, I played this a ton with college bros and that alone makes it worth mentioning.
12. Smash Bros Brawl (2010)
I don't play it much now, but back in high school I played this a lot. Unfortunately I live in the middle of nowhere and had no friends to play with, so I never really got that good. Still, a classic.
11. Mata Nui Online Game I/II (2001)
Quite possibly one of the best flash games ever made. This was a not-insignificant factor I am still the hopeless Bionicle fanboy I am today. Playing this in 2001 blew my mind, even though I didn't understand much of it. Playing it since then really makes me appreciate how inspired the story and art was in this series. For me, best toy line ever made full stop.
10. Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 (2002)
Classic. Got it second hand from my cousin when I was 6 or so? I have 2 and 3 but 1 will always be the one for me.
9. POD (1999)
Racing game with fairly standard mechanics that game bundled with a lot of Win95s. What sets it apart for me is its super inspired artstyle along with a ton of free DLC, which is even more impressive since it came out in 1997. This is one of the first games I ever played, and I still play it today occasionally.
8. Trackmania United Forever (2009)
Geez, I played this in 2009 so much it isn't funny. I wasn't even that good, but man did I enjoy every minute of it. Made tons of crappy tracks, got smeared by people that had decent framerates and better driving skills, but I regret nothing.
7. Lego Stunt Rally (2000)
This is a big deal for me. This game is a (pretty mediocre, honestly) isometric railroaded racing game where you could build your own tracks. I bought this game with my own $7 when I was 5 years old and I played it straight for over a year. It was my first 'addiction' to a game you could say. It's nothing special as a game but it will forever be important to me.
6. Civilization III-V (2004)
One of the few games (series) that I reliably play as much now as I did when I first found them. Got Civ III in some scholastic catalog back when I was 8 or 9 and it blew my mind. It might have done more to influence my love of history than I give it credit for. Who knows, maybe I wouldn't be doing the comic I'm doing if it wasn't for this game. Played IV and V a ton as well, both are extremely good games in their own way and outshine III by a long shot.
5. Skyrim (2012)
   Sorry. It was on sale.
4. Lego Racers 2 (2003)
Yeahhhh boyyyeeeee. Spent more afternoons in 3rd grade playing this thing than I can count. One of the first games I 'beat'. It will always be near and dear to me.
3. Combat Flight Simulator I (2001)
My dad is a huge WWII history and airplane buff and it rubbed off on me. This is a 1998 game where you just fly around a WWII fighter and shoot stuff. It's pretty realistic with physics and stuff if you want it to be, or you could be like me and turn on unlimited rockets and fly under the Eiffel Tower to dodge ME-109s. This and Lego Racers will forever be the face of grade school gaming for me.
2. Team Fortress 2 (2011)
Yeah so I was never one for shooters before I tried this. Gave it a shot right after the f2p update and here I am with 2300hrs. And I was still hooked while my only option was to play it with 10fps on my old laptop. Best shooter ever made. Haven't stopped playing it since I started.
1. Robot Arena 2 (2003)
What can I say? It is the only game besides Civ I play as much today as I did when I was a kid, and its more special to me than Civ by far. We've had ups and downs, but you will always be mine, girl.

« on: October 06, 2018, 07:04:46 PM »
I'm really not trying to cast any shade towards anyone or their work, but can someone please answer why they find the Stock aesthetic so appealing? I think it looks revolting and so very visually disgusting.

I'm seriously not trying to be rude, it's just a question I've been meaning to ask for a good while now.
it's the same quality that engineers see in a well-engineered machine, the efficiency of a design is often the major beauty in and of itself

the component designs themselves are arguably messy and goofy looking, but the components can look like anything and still not affect the thought put into the design. it's the same mentality behind people making things in beseige, where every part looks ridiculous but there are some very fine designs made out of those parts than can be appreciated by ingenuity and creativity alone.

I'm PMing 123 with all this stuff. I should be able to do a lot of it myself if he gives me the green light. If he doesn't respond after a while I'll work on it and see from there.

he didn't respond so w're going ahead with an """"unofficial"""" update. geice and 09 are helping and we are likely trying to get this done before we begin work on updating redace's reforged pack and before yugi's tourney begins. will post a thread with the changes soon.

I'd recommend either MW or LW. didn't really have it crash mid-match with either.

MW gives a little more variety but LW is definitely easier and faster to build a bot, will help with those who aren't confident in ironforge

pvp LW isn't bad at all. you can outdrive a lot of the dumb things AI does that make LW matches 'boring'

Discussion / fall damage in ra2
« on: October 04, 2018, 06:27:55 PM »
I kinda wish ra2 had fall damage. when I toss a robot 30ft in the air it makes me a bit sad that it takes -20pts and is totally fine. in real life that thing would be toast.

ra2 does have fall damage. you notice it the most in stock where the components and armors are weaker. it's still ineffective, but i've seen more than 1 pixel on the armor HUD go down when I've tossed bots across the arena before. in DSL or especially ironforge fall damage is a complete non-factor.
GTMCS1 tried to fix this with their arena by having a damaging floor. that made all sorts of other problems.

i've got a fix. nerf the HP of all parts in a mod down by like ten times. i'm serious. fall damage in ra2 is basically a constant coded into the exe, the only other thing to do is reduce the HP and DP all parts by a large factor and then by design fall damage would rise dramatically. it wouldn't affect fights since all parts would still be balanced with each other. if you get DP values and such too low there might be rounding issues and stuff but the main theory is sound.

I doubt any mod will take advantage of this, just thought i'd mention it.

compressor arena has bad camera angles and may encourage camping. not sure if it's a good choice. if you don't want octagon (which is a very good arena in pvp), I recommend half circle or metal skull. just be sure to buff the hazards to ironforge standards. you need hazards in PVP if you want variety.
I did initially want to go with Metal Skull but the massive pit seems like a pretty easy/cheap win con. Half Circle feels too cramped. I'll test out the action cam with the Compressor Arena. And I'm not too sure what you mean by encouraging camping, other than both bots refusing to leave the starting gates. What do people feel about the current arena choice and possible fallback options like the Electric Arena and the Metal Skull? Have any suggestions for better arenas?

well personally I would also use a class lighter than HW for online but its your call. my reasoning is that you need a lot of room to move around for strategic reasons and  I think LWs are actually the perfect size for most stock arenas (whether that is a class you'd want to film i'll leave up to you). they crash way less too, it happens more with parsec than you may be used to.

if you want HWs, I would try an arena about the size of the DSL tourney one. I wouldn't use that one specifically, just the size.

i'm in even though i am the bad man and may lag in UK.

I hope you are able to host a tournament online with 8+ people though. it's very difficult to coordinate people esp with different timezones. don't expect this to be over with in a month or 2. plan for it being very long. it's better to have infrequent good matches than have tons of people ragequit or not be able to connect at a given time. I highly recommend making a discord channel specifically for the tournament like I did.

feel free to steal anything from the centauri rules if you need including images.
