Working on a second car right now.

If your tx has the capabilities, you may want to play around with the trims and acceleration curves to get the bot to drive straighter. Seems like the weight balance is pulling it hard to the right.

Really late to the party. Just sent Badnik stats/skin. At least the car should look decent.

Discussion / Re: DSL IRL Building Guideline Suggestions
« on: May 16, 2012, 05:05:39 PM »
I've been seeing a fair bit of discussion about whether or not a particular battery setup is IRL and thought this would be the place to weigh in on it-

In Nyx, I use a 1lb battery to power 3 fairly powerful motors in a 30lb robot, though one is intermittent use.

that works out to 3.333% of the weight of the robot being battery. In the case of a RA2 LW, that means roughly 8.33lbs should be battery for an equivalent drive/weapon system, which in the case of Nyx, has enough battery for two full matches before needing a recharge while using the equivalent of 1.3 ants for the whole system.

In the case of Moros, I use ~2lbs of batteries, so 16.5lbs for two drive motors and 1 weapon motor, however in this case as well, I have far more battery than I need in Moros, but even then, it would still only use the equivalent of 2.5 ants for three motors.

Real world battery technology has blown right by the "capacity" ratings in DSL, and I think if you  really want to set hard "capacity" rules, it should be more weight percentage based than number of cell based. If a real world robot is using more than about 5% of their weight for batteries most of the time they've either got an insane weapon system or old battery technology.

Nice.
What would it be able to handle weightclass-wise? Beetleweights?

With the walls I'm planning, I'd feel safe testing a beetle in the arena, it'd be a bit small for them to fight in though. Combat area is 4'x4', which is enough for US and UK ants.

Progress on the safety cage for my practice arena. The next two planned   ants should have spinning weapons, so walls are somewhat necessary for   safe testing.

What are the best combat robotics sites to refer to when looking for local competitions?  United States would be most important to me, but other countries would be good for other members.  Whenever I google search I get a ton of dead links and old expired crap.

http://www.buildersdb.com/index.asp is the main registration site for most US events
http://robogames.net/index.php should have RoboGames/Combots info
http://battlebots.forumotion.com/ usually has educational event info
http://www.gonrl.org/ also has educational event info

Is that a BW or LW? Looks nice either way.

LW, 4 astros, so it's fairly quick.

Ooh, this sounds interesting. I might ask the first question- who did Mortis get sold onto after Team Bud?

Based upon this thread- http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/fraforum/viewtopic.php?f=166&t=4980&hilit=mortis it seems likely that it's now in the possession of Make Robotics, the builder(s) of Behemoth.

Attention-Attention-Attention

There is a new thread for all things robotics question related. If you feel it necessary to continue discussing that side of things, move the discussion to this thread- https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,10288.0.html and keep it civil.

This thread exists for several purposes:

1: Robot history related questions.
2: Robot component and design related questions.
3: Discussion of answers to said questions given on this site or any other site.

Keep the discussions civil and don't get personal. There are a lot of experienced builders around that can answer questions and we likely disagree on many key points. Flamewars will be nuked from orbit.

Anyone can answer a question, and several people can answer the same question. For history questions, do try to make sure you're answering accurately. For design questions, there's likely no "right" answer and they will more often than not be an opinion based answer.

I do prefer the looks of the second one, personally. It's like a big dragon-looking thing. Beater Bars don't appear to fit, in my view, but that's the only worry for me. What's attached to the Judge Bursts on the second one? (I assume that's what they are.)

Both are built on the same platform, which includes two flipping arms attached to the bursts.

Bot on the left would need custom AI to use, as the intent is to grab with the mag snapper arms, hold for a few seconds, then flip.

Looking spectacular. Only problem I can see is the beaters on the flipper segments in the middle impeding the bot from one pair of drums. If you attach them flat, then I reckon the drums could come into play more often. Axle-mounted Spike Strips also look cool, though might not be terribly effective.

The top of the beaters on the flipper sit just a hair lower than the teeth on the actual drum, so it doesn't seem to hurt it much, it also reduces pressure on the drums when you've got a HW sitting on them, meaning the drums tend to keep their speed better.

Flipper. I was trying different setups for a MW IRL flipper. The one to the left of it and the one in the middle row on the left are from the same tests.

Bunch of newish bots, forgot that I'd already posted the SHW in the back.

Just one of those thoughts... Do you want me to record real motor/pnuematics sounds? The in game pneumatics sound nothing like the do in real life.

I like this idea. Between the two of us, we've got a pretty good range of motors. You could probably also take a recording of Phoenix's flipper.

Motors/rigs I've got
Short Magmotor
18v dewalt
18v dewalt flipper(maybe burst-ish)
Spark (ant) motors
Servo

Could also probably record the drill press/table saw/mill etc.. for some other noise options.
