Real Robotics Discussion / Re: So, why do we all hate Chomp?

I don't hate Chomp, I just hate the scoring system for allowing Chomp to win its controversial matches.

« on: December 29, 2016, 03:18:14 PM »

DSL2.2 IRL (VERY strict IRL standards will be upheld. Rejected bots will be displayed as examples of insufficiently IRL bots.)
LW (249.9 and under, not including smartzones)
Cheatbot 2 is not allowed
2 minute fights (draws will be judged by me, not decided via points.)
DSC's extender pack allowed
Bots with frenzy hammers, typhoon teeth (large and small) and replica disks will be subject to extra scrutiny. "Tryhard" bots will be instantly rejected.
Ring spinners and SnS are banned
RA2CF is permitted. BFEing chassis height and/or burst arcs is also permitted.
Swiss army bots are allowed, but you must tell me what permutation you want to use when entering your bot (i.e. against rammers I want X setup, for the rumble I want Y setup etc), max of 3 versions allowed.
Multibots are allowed (if you're insane...)
Skinned components are allowed
I reserve the right to reject a bot for any reason

2 bots allowed per person
Bracket structure will depend on number of entrants, most likely will be a 4-way group rumble, with the top 2 moving on to a BO1 double-elimination bracket

The arena used will be the bitty bots arena:

Tournament Archives / Re: The Zone: Discussion
« on: December 24, 2016, 02:38:46 PM »
I'd like to give hosting another shot. Here's a concept:
16 entrants

Stock LW
IRL
HAX Mode Banned
No modifications outside of the game
Meltybrain and crawlers banned
One havok restart per match, after that, it's a forfeit.
Upgrades: You may make unlimited upgrades that DO NOT CHANGE THE AI. YOU MAY ONLY CHANGE YOUR AI ONCE. MAKE IT COUNT.
The gimmick: This will be run KotH style (BO1, winner keeps fighting, most wins, well... wins).
5 rounds will be run, with everyone fighting once per round.
Seed will be determined by how fast you can kill some kind of SFTW. The current king will go first after round 1, followed in order of the least kills to the most.
Arena: Starts as combat zone, no hazards. after 1 round, it's the king's choice, of any arena they want (as long as it works and is skinned appropriately).
I will NOT be entering unless there are less than 8 people who enter at the end of the deadline.
This is signups topic and rules quoted may not change. You've got 3 months, enjoy :)

That's something I'd like to hear feedback on. Don't really want to say 'they don't have to be completed' when I may be biased in that sense.
Tbh, I think they do have to be finished. For example, although GTMRW has great production quality, I don't think it's so far into the tournament that it could be deemed the best tourney of 2016.

Tournament Archives / Re: Stilt Stumble- Signups
« on: December 12, 2016, 08:14:07 PM »
Alright lads I've got a real stupid idea for a tournament

Boring rules
Stock MW
16 entrants
One entrant per person
Double elimination
3 minute fights
No BFE/AAM/other wizardry
1 havok restart allowed before the match is forfeited
No component freedom, RO7 break etc.
Combat arena
Skinned components are allowed
Multibots are not allowed
Robots must show controlled movement
Cheatbot2 banned
My robot:

Gimmick rules
All bots must be stilt bots
Armour will be BFE'd, the only way of winning will be by immobilising your opponent
The bottom of the robot chassis must be higher than or close to the top of a crate
Robots will be counted out with a self-imposed countdown as soon as they lose controlled movement
If no bot is immobilised in the three minutes, the winner will be based on points

It feels a little odd that we recognise the builder but not the bot. it comes off as "Well done, you're the best ___ builder, but eh, who cares what the actual bots were that made people make their decision."
I see nothing wrong with that, tbh. Seems needless to recognise every single bot that made you vote for them because it could be an entire showcase worth of stuff.

[cool ass logo.png coming soon]

yeah yeah i know i don't have the best tournament hosting record but just hear me out ok this is gonna be cool

RULES:
- DSL 2.2, Middleweight AND Heavyweight
- One entry per person per weight class.
- The arena we will be fighting in is the Death Facility arena from the Robot Wars RA2 Mod. I'll reskin this at some point between now and the time the SBV thread is posted.
- 2 minute matches
- Double elimination bracket
- This tournament will be held to VERY STRICT IRL Realism standards. None of that borderline crap. Make your robot look like a real robot or it will be rejected.
- Matches that contain Havok will not be shown. If your robot cannot participate in a match without havoking then it will be rejected.
- All glitches are allowed as long as your robot is still IRL-realistic. I will be judging this VERY STRICTLY so do not push it.
- RA2 Component Freedom is allowed and encouraged to make your robots look as good as posible.
- BFE for realism and aesthetic purposes are allowed and encouraged as long as the robot stays realistic.
- Robots must look as close to real-life designs as possible.
- No Flamethrowers, Crawlers or SnS. Thwackbots are fine.
- Multibots are allowed.
- MW Walkers/shufflers can weigh up to 800 kgs, but at least 400 kgs must be used on the walker or shuffler system itself.
- HW Walkers/shufflers can weigh up to 1200 kgs, but at least 400 kgs must be used on the walker or shuffler system itself.
- Swiss Army Bots are limited to three different weapon systems.
- DSC's IRL packs are allowed and encouraged for this tournament.
- Other skinned parts are also allowed and encouraged, as long as they are included in your PM. Make your robot look unique and interesting!
- If your robot looks really bad (like for example a garish box with a weapon slapped on it) then your robot will be rejected.
- I reserve the right to re-skin any robot I think has a bad or low-effort skin.
- I reserve the right to reject blatant re-entries or boring clones of existing robots. Put some effort into making something original, it really isn't that difficult.
- The following Cheatbot2 Components are allowed:

Basically I want you guys to put as much effort as possible into making something that looks fantastic. The art tournament to end all art tournaments. Can you guys do that?

JUDGING
- Fights will be judged on significant attacks and control of match.
- Judging will be done by myself. If anyone has an issue with this then we can discuss it in the thread.

ALL of the robots that participate in this tournament will be included in the first release of Live Designs AI 2.2. Yes, this will be a thing. That thread's going up once the tournament ends.
This is now a signups topic and the rules quoted may not change. You've got 3 months, enjoy.

Tournament Archives / Re: EMERGENCY EXIT
« on: December 02, 2016, 08:10:15 PM »
The following is a trial run of allowing one host to host more than one tournament at a time. This may become commonplace or I may make exceptions, in the future. We'll see. But, for now;

(Image removed from quote.)

RULES:
Stock
Any weightclass
No popups or stiltbots. Meltybrain and custom .pys are banned.
1 bot per person. After the first week of signups I'll allow you to enter a jokebot as a 2nd bot (John vs EMERGENCY incoming)
Custom components (including skins) are banned. Even sage's skin pack; I'm on a fresh RA2 install for this one lads.
RA2T#2 Arena
Fights last 1 minute 30 seconds
Bots will fight EMERGENCY. You can only win by KOing (WBP or OOTA via havok do  not count) EMERGENCY within 1:30.
Rankings will be based on weight; Bots that beat EMERGENCY (from lightest to heaviest) then bots that lose to EMERGENCY (lightest to heaviest)
Ties will be decided by a BO1 match in the RA2T#2 arena lasting 3 minutes.
After the tournament I'll be doing plenty of bonus matches, so feel free to request any. Currently planned:

SIGNUPS:
Signups will last 2 weeks, or until I get bored and just start it. So get your entries in quickly.
I can AI but strongly encourage you to do so.
Time left for signups: tba
