DSL is basically stock to most people.

I'm one of the few people who only build in DSL, mainly because I feel that there is more variety.

No, most people build only DSL. After a few lame attempts at stock, most people decide DSL is easier.
You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

I only build in DSL because of the realism of the Ai and the components in the bot lab.
In my honest opinion, I think stock is better for those who like to 'Build bots, fight bots', as quoting the back of the RA2 box.
And DSL is better for those who like to build a basic robot/advanced robot, post on showcase/seek advise and improve so
they themselves can enter a tournament.

For me I only use DSL for the realism it offers. And for someone like... Sage let's say, he probably enjoys using stock for
the freedom and endless creativity that the building style of stock offers.

Thats my view only.

Because there is a set amount of parts.
I expect that Backlash, when finished, will have it's own showcase section.

Surely it's a good thing for tons of 12 year olds to join?

After all, it's a game for 12 year olds.

And besides, this forum needs more popularity, as RA2 is a dying game, and WE are basically the only people who play it on a regular basis.

The more people, the better.

It's dying because most posts aren't RA2 related, I'm here to look at interesting designs and watch tournaments not to read useless junk in the junk yard section where some people spend most of their time.

Maybe we can Sticky some showcases like Click's and Inf's so people can look at them for ideas and building tips.

The only reason why the community isn't as vibrant (I wouldn't say "dying." We've been "dying" for at least six years) anymore is because Battlebots and Robot Wars aren't on network television anymore. It really has nothing to do with us or the community, just a general lack of interest in the subject. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that many of the people who have been kicking around for a while discovered Battlebots or Robot Wars first, and then found RA2 where they could live out their dreams of robotic dominance vicariously through a PC game. People like that are getting rarer and rarer. It also dosen't help that we've pushed the learning curve for both Stock and DSL so steep that many new members don't stand a chance in tourneys. I remember that Ian and I placed second in his Tag Team Tourney really soon after I had joined - I was still a n00b, but I could compete head-to-head with some of the best. That just doesn't happen anymore.

I'm not as concerned with the direction of the forums as some seem to be, I will say this though: since the move to GTM's from the Atari forums and the subsequent exposure DSL gained, it feels like the community has become a bit unfocused. I'm sure you've all heard by now how each individual tourney was a big deal, and how they were rare and that two at the same time was unheard of. But when someone was hosting a tourney, it felt like everybody in the community was following it, even those who weren't participating. Also, the discussion of DSL was completely minimal. Even though it had been released, GTM's was basically a small offshoot that played the mod. Everything on the main forums was Stock, Stock, Stock. And I don't even remember an off-topic section xD

At the end of the day though, Frezal pretty much has it right:

@ Sage

Relax man. I understand what you mean by the showcase sections are dwindling. But at least we have members here, if all these young members leave. Then the member count could drop and considering most members are 12 or under (im not im 15) that are active most of the time. This forum could fall flat on its face. So if you think about it they are helping us as well with their showcases as well. As Frezal said. the game is 7 years old. Its something you should not get wound up about. its like in the most hated robot thread. Everyone kept arguing about tornado cheating which happened 8 years ago.

Thats all i have to say about this.

people saying DSL is better then stock due to realism is kidding   themselves, stock is about being creative just as much if not more then   just making stacked 36 mace HSers.

For me...
Stock - Creative with the ability to stack.
DSL - Creative with realistic rules and some more components.

Stock still has plenty of uses but people just aren't trying hard enough, even though I hardly play the game I still managed to create new AW's that people have never seen before.

I standby my original post in believing that the forum has gone downhill with the amount of rubbish such as smiley spams and useless posts around.

@ Robo we actually only had one series of Robot Wars here in Australia and battlebots never got to our tv's, so I don't believe that the forums current state has anything to do with lack of robotic combat shows on air these days.
