worried about the forums direction.
« on: August 24, 2010, 05:34:46 PM »
The amount of 12 year olds on this forum has me worried about the direction the forum is going, too much smiley spam, stupid ideas, not reading rules and people trying to host tournaments straight away/all the time. I dunno about you guys but it feels like we are being invaded by trolls or just a lot of little kids all at once and either way I don't like it.

Back when I was new we didn't have all this trolling/flaming/spamming, we just had people who wanted to build robots and get better at it. I might be gone from the forum due to reading all the rubbish gives me a headache and trying to find great robots and new inspiration is lacking a lot lately.

Discuss, maybe I'm not the only one who feels this way?

This thread is nowhere near as bad as some of the other threads I have been to.
And all the invading 12 year olds would be nice.... Well.. Member count wise...
Though they shouldnt post so many of the same topics, and actually make showcases like the rest of us do.
(...Not sure if that would be a good thing, but ehh)

He wasn't referring to YOU specifically. I can tthink of one 12 year old who's much more likely to be who he was talking about.
My above post explains everything about everything.

You're on the YCM forum too? I'm making a series of Pikmin cards on that site, look for "Pikmin Set" in the Media Cards.

This forum is really in a transition cycle when I showed up 2 years ago, and still is. 2 years ago, when BBEANS 4 was starting, there was an astounding lack of mainstay members (we had trouble filling a 32 bot bracket!). Since then, these forums have grown tremendously. Tons of people have joined. Tons of people that are INTERESTED IN RA2, which is the main point of GTM. The main core of people here have shifted a lot. Gone are the days where n00b whacking was rampant, and tons of members were driven away in droves. Now, we get lots of mainstay members. They can be a bit immature sometimes, but I can always get a laugh out of something on here. And maybe some people are immature. I used to be. The longer they stay, the more mature they get, and the better this place becomes.

P.S. These kinds of threads are just as bad as the n00by threads IMO. Its a valid point though, but still...
I built that big robot on that TV show that time

Agree with Ian. It's become an RA2 forum where 80% of the posts have little to do with the game. The section that should have the most posts (Stock/DSL Showcase) by far, is beaten out by the Junk Yard. Story time is the most useless thing I've ever seen. There's maybe 5 builders where I actually enjoy looking in their showcase, while the rest don't have any inclination to get better and reject our advice. (See, Sparkey's 90 page 0 good bot showcase)

If you don't want to get better at building or modding OR you want to but are too young to know whats going on, get off the RA2 forum.
You got my vote for RA2 Wizard. Always and forever.

*stock. And that's of the people who post bots pretty frequently. Like I don't count Inf, Pysc, or Luigica in that count.

I can see where you guys are coming from, but what the heck do you want us to do? Make some sort of gated community of RA2 so there's only a handful of us left? And then how do we decide what qualifies a person to come in or not? We can't just ban anybody who isn't an RA2 god like Click or Inf. Somebody pretty much summed it up with his post.

This community is simply a microcosm of the real world; we have the top brains, the people who control it, the idiots who don't listen, and everything in between. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Hopefully the idiots get smarter, as they usually do. They just progress at different rates. We even got Hydro to start acting mature, that's like a record or something.

Guess what, I was a n00b once. Naryar was a n00b once. Inf, Pys, Click, ACAMS, we ALL were n00bs once. The point is, it's a game geared towards kids. Most of us were kids when we picked it up, and a lot of us still are (I'm only 17 if you would believe that.) Age obviously has nothing to do with it. It's all about maturity, which is something that can only come with time. Like I said, some people just take more time than others. Most of you guys that just said you were only 12, I never would have guessed.

Surely it's a good thing for tons of 12 year olds to join?

After all, it's a game for 12 year olds.

And besides, this forum needs more popularity, as RA2 is a dying game, and WE are basically the only people who play it on a regular basis.

It's dying because most posts aren't RA2 related, I'm here to look at interesting designs and watch tournaments not to read useless junk in the junk yard section where some people spend most of their time.

Maybe we can Sticky some showcases like Click's and Inf's so people can look at them for ideas and building tips.

One of the main problems is is that the showcases are at the middle of of the main page.

Most people are inclined to look at the top (announcements and tournaments) and the bottom (all the crap), NOT the middle.

I feel that the showcases should be nearer to the top.

Eh, it isn't as bad as you're making it sound imo and I don't read half the topics on here since most are just retarded. Just stay with the threads that you know are good and skip the others.

Showcase section isn't that bad either though. Stock is obviously dieing since there are hardly any nnew posts and a lot of people just don't bother learning glitches, which leads to bfe which makes things even worse. DSL isn't as bad since you can make a pretty simple bot and still have it be effective despite what DSL has become.
