That being said, "just screaming" isn't music.  screaming correctly is.  And, to me, someone who can switch back and forth seamlessly between screaming and singing, and do both well, is much more talented than someone who doesn't scream at all.

Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth. 'Nuff said.

Anyways, I've never really been a thrash guy. I've always liked the more sludge, stoner and prog stuff. I'm really digging Mastodon, Baroness, Opeth and Isis at the moment.

Their first was glam, but the second and third (and even CFH) has some thrash elements in it.

They weren't really a thrash band, though. Not quite enough punk elements.

Huuuuge diffference between sub-genres when it comes to metal.

:ermm:
It's a bit tricky, pointing out the difference between ALL the sub-genres you mentioned.
For example though my favourite metal sub-genre is prog, which is about complex song structures, longer song lengths, usually extra instruments (e.g keyboards, orchestra) and can have varying kinds of vocalists.

Thrash though for example, is a faster and heavier version of classic metal basically, at it's core is usually quite simple musically, tends to stick to a band of 4 (i.e no keyboards or extra instruments).

Thrash is essentially a combination of classic heavy metal (Black Sabbath and the like) and hardcore punk. It's really loud and fast with relatively simple song structures.

Death Metal is sh** with sh**ty vocals.

Prog(ressive) Metal is the metal equivalent of Progressive Rock. The song structures are very complex and the albums tend to revolve around a concept. Keyboards aren't a requirement, though they are often used.

Grunts suck. Black metal is far superior as it often contains vocals that aren't complete crap. I will say that melodic death metal isn't all bad, though.

It really depends on the band. Take Scar Symmetry, a band you haven't heard of (probably). Its death metal bt has clean vocals in many places. And sometimes the lyrics are very good. Opeth is sort of Symphonic Death Metal but is absolutely the best metal band on the planet for quality.

Here we go sage ;)
NWOBHM: This was the first kind of Heavy Metal and basically is like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, not extreme but very much like metal and rock mixed.
Thrash: Relies on fast tempos, not as fast as speed metal but very fast, with loud distorted guitars, with complex note patterns. Often features growled vocals. Good example is The Evil Has Landed by Testament.
Speed Metal: Basically patented by Motorhead and Anthrax in somewhat different styles. Very fast rhythm and a very punky attack, but with massively fast riffs. Probably the second hardest type to play after thrash. Ace Of Spades by Motorhead and Indians by Anthrax are your examples.
Black Metal: Genre basically made by Venom then made popular by Slayer. Like Death Metal but less extreme and with sung vocals. Varies a heck of a lot though. Two examples- My Twin by Katatonia and War Ensemble by Slayer are our examples.
Death Metal: A diverse range of genres come under this but it is mostly about very growly vocals and extremely heavy riffs. Can also be wonderfully well done as proven by a few band such as Opeth, Meshuggah, ISIS and Scar Symmetry. Our most generic example will be Bleed by Meshuggah.
Power Metal: A metal based off NWOBHM guitar and rythm wise but with higher guitar and cheap choir sound effects :P. Example is Mr. Torture by Helloween.
Nu Metal/Post Grunge: Characterised by rap and slowish industrial sounding riffs, this type of metal is by far the newest. Example is Stricken by Disturbed.
Progressive Metal: Scorpion loves this cause of Dream Theatre. Thrash metal with more progressive rock style riffs and keyboard backing very often.
Stoner: Basically rock, not very metallic to be honest...
Sludge: Slow, grungy rhythms and strange styling. I'm no expert here but Mastodon is your band example.

Hope my guide helped you Sage ;).

NWOBHM: This was the first kind of Heavy Metal and basically is like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, not extreme but very much like metal and rock mixed. Yeah, your pretty spot on there, it's a good sub genre that's sadly dying out as most of the former N.W.O.B.H.M bands are either retired, or have changed their musical direction (for example iron maidens turning towards the progressive side )

Thrash: Relies on fast tempos, not as fast as speed metal but very fast, with loud distorted guitars, with complex note patterns. Often features growled vocals. Good example is The Evil Has Landed by Testament. Thanks for pointing out the important fact that thrash is rather complexmusically, but I think that singing style in thrash is rather varied now, and unfortunately more "death style" than the N.W.O.B.H.M or hetfield style singers back in the 80's

I wouldn't call anthrax speed. Slayer were the big four of thrash band that pionered speed, anthrax pionered nu-metal(sadly), Metallica innovated on ol' fashioned heavy metal and Megadeth made dance/pop metal with risk

Black Metal: Genre basically made by Venom then made popular by Slayer. Like Death Metal but less extreme and with sung vocals. Varies a heck of a lot though. Two examples- My Twin by Katatonia and War Ensemble by Slayer are our examples. Once again slayer was speed/thrash not black, their songs are far too repetitive and stupid musically to be black  ;). IMO black metal focuses on gothic styles rather than heavyness, but that's clearly up for debate

Death metal is basically to metalwhat metal is to rock. You can put all kind of sub genres within death metal if you want (for example I think opeth are primarily progressive death metal). Still think the majority of death is too immature and lacks direction

Power Metal: A metal based off NWOBHM guitar and rythm wise but with higher guitar and cheap choir sound effects :P. Example is Mr. Torture by Helloween. Don't disrespect power metal! I know the genre has many flaws and often falls to the same stereo-types, but I still enjoying listening to some of it now and then

Nu Metal Is not music, is unredeamable, is immature lyrically, musically and imagewise and everytime i see somebody wearing a slipknot shirt part of me dies inside

Progressive Metal: Scorpion loves this cause of Dream Theatre. Thrash metal with more progressive rock style riffs and keyboard backing very often. It's Dream Theater, not Dream Theatre ahem, sorry about that, but yeah progressive metal = win all over.
Don't know what you mean by the thrash metal comparrison though

Sludge: Slow, grungy rhythms and strange styling. I'm no expert here but Mastodon is your band example.
Relatively new genre, I like it a lot though, very unique, often mixed with many progressive elements aswell which is only a good thing, crack the skye FTW

NWOBHM: This was the first kind of Heavy Metal and basically is like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, not extreme but very much like metal and rock mixed.
It was actually the second kind (hence the name). New Wave of British Heavy Metal takes the very bluesy elements of the first wave (Black Sabbath) and combines some elements of punk.

While I'm not necessarily disagreeing, Lemmy of Motörhead doesn't like to call his band a metal band. He insists that he's doing "Rock & Roll". It's a fair point considering how easy it is to hear the Rockabilly influence.

Black Metal: Genre basically made by Venom then made popular by Slayer. Like Death Metal but less extreme and with sung vocals. Varies a heck of a lot though. Two examples- My Twin by Katatonia and War Ensemble by Slayer are our examples.
Slayer is Thrash. Along with Venom, Mercyful Fate was also a Black Metal pioneer. King Diamond of MF helped define the image by introducing corpse paint.

Nu Metal/Post Grunge: Characterised by rap and slowish industrial sounding riffs, this type of metal is by far the newest. Example is Stricken by Disturbed.
Bad example. Disturbed stopped being Nu-Metal after their first album. By the time the song "Stricken" came out, they had gone Hard Rock.
