The uncanny valley exists because all too often people with diseases such as smallpox and leprosy looked "off" and animals evolved to shun them, not for hate but for survival. This also crossed into Mentality when it includes diseases such as Rabies which affect the mind.
 
It is a fear, but only as a defense mechanism. This is a primal feature that has no use. A vestigial mechanism of the mind.
