Somebody said 'You can't touch me, I'm a girl' so I poked them in the arm, they then slapped me and I hit them back and said 'Self defence'

That never happened at my old high school. Everyone punched everyone, and I went to the library.

I'm not one to use violence to solve my problems. But if I were to be physically attacked, I would use any means, including contact (IE. a hard shove) to defend myself and/or get to safety, regardless of gender. So basically-
"Violence is not the answer to any of your regular problems, nor is being an abusive bully. But if someone is coming at you, don't let them use their gender to prevent you from defending yourself"

And technically, it's not any more illegal to punch a woman, but a jury is a hellava lot more likely to convict you for punching a woman than a man.
