I personally think that it sucks these days, as the lyrics almost always have similar themes and there's no longer any sort of instrumental focus. Add to that an utter lack of experimentation which you can find in electronic and rock music and it's an instant turn-off for me.

I've personally found only one album that hit no.1 in recent years to be any good, and that was Iron Maidens "The Final Frotier". Went no.1 in 7 countries and was still kick ass.

Meh, metal grew on me once I started listening to it enough. Naturally there's a huge difference between Iron Maiden and say, Edge Of Sanity, although I like both.

2 of those aren't really metal (tool is close, QOTSA isn't) imo.

They may sound fairly similar and use the same instruments but really they have their own unique features.
