Favorite OS and why?
« on: March 05, 2010, 04:58:26 PM »
What operating system do you like best and why? Not just for RA2, mind you.

I myself, really have no preference between Macs and Windows. I think they're both good.

Macs are just way more expensive, so I generally stick to windows. Apple is smaller than MS and it even makes its own computers, so it's logical than they would charge more I suppose. I also LOVE the little CD slit instead of the spring loaded thingy on 90% of other computers. They also seem sleeker somehow (the computers and the OS). I like Macs a lot in general.

Windows I'm just used to, and it's cheaper. XP was ok, but my desktop just got really cluttered and slow after a while. Windows 7 just flat out rocks. Aero is awesome, W7 is faster, need I say more?

I've never tried Linux or anything. What about you?

BTW, please don't make this a flame war over which is better. Thanks.

Windows: It's good for its large library of software and hardware support and offers a good amount of customizability. I haven't tried Windows 7, so most of my familiarity is with XP and 2000.

Mac OS X: This is my favorite operating system. I like the interface, the dock, Exposé, Widgets as an extra layer, Spaces, and the iLife suite. I also enjoy how it has a huge amount of drivers built in, so when you buy something like a new printer, you can skip the setup phase. I am familiar with OS X 10.1, 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), and am using 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on my 2007 MacBook right now.

Chrome OS: Chrome OS is a neat idea, but it's not very practical. I like how simple it is, but I don't like how it doesn't allow for storing files to a disk. Also, how can I play my tunes without a music app? That being said, it would be kind of cool on an iPad-like device. My experience is with a pre-release, so it might vastly improve when it's finished.

Other: I don't think I have much experience with other operating systems. I keep intended to download Ubuntu (or possibly Kubuntu), but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe when I get an external hard drive.

Window XP in classic view.  Nothing else will do for now.

Mac feels slow in my experience, and since mac computer comes in model and OS, it's not like I can do much about it.  And did I mention I hate overly graphical interface?

Linux doesn't support any programs (namely games), plus it's not really any faster than XP.  Driver (especially for sounds) can also be a pain to find.

Windows is what I have used since ever touching a computer

I know XP incredibility well so I tend to get it/ advise others using my network to get it.. otherwise I wont set it up for them :P (my sisters Vista got lucky)

I have been using Mac a lot lately as its heavily used within Graphic Design (the career I am studying) and its really growing on me too

never used Linux myself, some peole say the open source is the way of the future but meh the other 2 operating systems meet my needs so why bother trying a 3rd ?

Well it's windows, cause that's what Ima used to. If I were to get a mac, and use it about 1-2 years I could change my mind, but you never no.

Funny thing is, the public school I went to had apple computers with mac OS and it took a couple of months before me and my friends figured out firefox it what apples use instead of IE :P

Vista/Ubuntu Linux dual boot.
Vista for gaming (one of the few things it doesn't balk at), Ubuntu for everything else (free!). It's a good system. And Frezal you need to try it, especially considering all you need is a blank 700MB CD

Don't really like the Mac mostly because of its weird file storage system. I can't find anything on them.

and your still incorrect :P

Safari is the original Apple browser, firefox is an addition same as it is on windows.. but it is a very popular and common browser on apple

I'm a PC.  I don't like Macs.  I would like macs more if they had a task bar like interface in the dock for switching windows. I also don't like that file edit ect. Are on the top of the screen in a bar not in the window.  I used to love XP. I got a new computer in January with windows 7 I am never going back. I do agree with Joe on graphic design programs tend to be better on Macs.

My trusty old Mac Powerbook is still running OS 9.2. I only use it to run Photoshop.  My main computer is running XP, which is an awesome OS.  Since I work at a store that sells computers I got to get down and dirty with Vista and determined that I would skip that OS generation altogether (because it's a RAM hog).  Now that 7 is out I can finally upgrade, because that OS seems quite awesome and runs RA2 nicely.

I might have to give it a small partition at some point in the near future.

Windows 7 is really handy in that is has a search bar built right into the start menu (right by the shut down option), and it's really really fast.

Windows XP

Its good enough, for me.

And I dont like changing to newer systems because its going to cause problems when I try playing older games, wich im already having problems on this. Should propably get the 64bit version so I can add more RAM. I got 4Gb and this only regodnizess 3.2Gb...
