Best antivirus ?
« on: November 10, 2009, 09:18:18 AM »
WARNING: thread might end in a minor flame war because of widely different opinions

My Avast! free copy died a few days ago (more precisely, the protection died, or so they say) and i am looking for another "free trial" antivirus to use temporarily (and when this one will end, i'll delete the registry entry and change for again another free trial because i am greedy and dont want to pay)

I heard praise for Norton and Kaspersky, but i am not sure... so what do you guys recommend ?

like reier said don't get Norton because i used to have it installed and it would not un-install and i kept getting viruses off of it.
in the end i had to reformat computer because of hundreds of viruses.

i use AVG on my laptop and macaffe (i think thats how its spelled) on my main computer.

AVG Free 8.5. Its very good, its completly free or if you want a firewall with it, then you need to pay for it. Its lightweight(doesnt use much memory at all) and it detects the virus files as soon as they are on the computer, like if you are downloading something and when the download is complete it warns you and allows you to instatntly Heal the problem, aka remove the file.

It's called Common Sense + an occasional Avast! scan.

I use Norton, never had any issues with it. Only problem is it lags your computer to a crawl while doing a system scan, so you have to set it to run when you're not going to use your computer.

That's the problem. I cannot imagine how badly this thing must be written in order to completely block the computer from all usage when accessing files from the HDD and comparing them against a dictionary (Norton's heuristics suck).

I still wonder why viruses / worms haven't switched to running kernel-mode, as a driver. It's harder to code, but ****, they'd be undetectable, they'd be able to hook into any system call to hide their existence from absolutely every program that runs in user-mode.

microsoft's new Free antivirus is actually really good. Very small footprint, great detection, and does not nag you.

I used to use ESET's Smart Security 4 for all of my PCs. Now for all of the Windows PCs, I use the new Windows Antivirus program. however, I still have an ESET license to burn through on my newest PC, so ESET will stay until December.

I never did like a lot of the anti-virus programs. I've tried AVG, ESET Smart Security (with firewall), Norton, and immediately got rid of Mcaffe after it destroyed some Windows files. Now I'm currently using ESET and the new Microsoft Antivirus program. My newest Windows 7 Desktop being the one with ESET.

I won't even talk about my Linux computers XP.

Comodo, AVG, Avast.

The thing with anti virus is that most of the popular ones (both free and commercial) have similar amount of scanning power and updates.  I use Comodo because it comes with a firewall and isn't littered with Ads/Reminders/Etc.

DO NOT USE MCAFEE. It is laggy and will slow your computer to about 1 fps and will update EVERY SINGLE DAY. basically, you cant do anything without mcafee ruining it.
