Why I built the Chaos AI "Pack"
« on: November 12, 2009, 07:30:41 PM »
Recently my video on Youtube was found not long after it was posted. Well, I have decided to build this pack to do the following

Reason #1

I wanted to get local people who were interested into robotics get into RA2. I built this pack to show different designs for those who were interested. Now, the majority of the bots are unrealistic and some are rebuilds of some known robots (Only two bots were copied and two were inspired by a design and completely built around this design) If the owners want them gone, I will remove them immediately. I have them unrealistic because the majority of the people that are interested like both unrealistic and realistic (which DSL 3 will be another tournament later on after its release, unless it gets cancelled, then DSL 2.1).

Reason #2

I have this AI Pack for entertainment and art purposes. Now many who have tried this mod already know that there are some, not all, UI changes. I have yet to completely finalize everything and I have even rebuilt the main menu. I am changing everything from Chaos AI Pack to Chaos Tournament, because that's what it will become. Now, when I mean entertainment, I mean a lot of destruction and a lot of throwing around the arenas. Realistic bots have quite the battles, but heavily unrealistic bots have a lot more fun and excitement around them (custom components or even bare stock bots like those from the Starcore AI Packs).

Reason #3

I wanted to build something in my spare time and I was still interested into RA2, though DSL just wasn't cutting it. I actually like the unrealistic values of stock RA2, but since using Alphasim's motors, I wanted to build custom (well, not custom as in having a one weapons bot that will do 999999+ damage per hit). A more balanced (but unrealistic) set of components. I wanted to add that extra unrealistic value to RA2. I have played so many games with mods that either made things really great and realistic, to those that throw things out of proportion. Both of them entertain me, but having the satisfaction of building my own mod (originally for myself) made me start it.

I'll probably be bashed for this, but I respect modifications to games. They add life to the game, not matter how realistic.

Okay, now for some pictures of the progress. Expect the title to show up better on the final release, though I don't know what I'm going to do with it without it looking bad.

Now the below image I'm being a bit controversial about. The surrounding background for the bots look good, but I don't know if I want to keep it or the original one for the purpose of making easy to photoshop screenshots (you know, for robot previews). My original thought was to keep this one and have the bland one that's easy to photoshop as an extra that can be swapped with renaming files.

This modified Octagon will have one last change. I don't like the top plates' stripes not being even. The guard rails are even and the guard rail at the entrance is a bit odd as well, but I'm keeping those.

lol Binary

Now, I am planning to make some new bots. I'm going to get rid of the replica bots, and RAMJET II (SCRAMJET remake) and Playmaker. The others may have modifications, especially textures.

thats my mod :-D similar in the means of destruction and throwing others around the arena but realistic is still enforced, also not to mention spinners are the only thing allowed lol

this is a teaser movie with myself testing the kinetics's of VS robots for my mod

best of luck with your project :D

My mod's focus is to have something for me and my friends to mess around with and try to make a tournament out of. Plus having similar properties of unrealism back in the day. However, the GTM community found it easily and many have already asked questions about it.

BTW - Your mod looks very promising. I had seen some of the UI, but I haven't seen the video until now. Very nice and it still sticks to realism (and might I say that it adds more realism IMO). I'll have to play it whenever it comes out.

It is a small internet world.  Especially in relation to robot combat games because as the years tick by, none of the game developers see the need to make a new game.  This, in turn, seems to keep the interest in RA2 mods steady.

Bravo for all your hard work.  Glad you are having fun making the mod, who cares if anyone disagrees.  It is your own project and your own time, so enjoy doing it. :D

thanks, as JD said with the lack of new robot combat games mods are welcomed by most, people may disagree with things like realism, etc in one mod but you have to love a standalone mod for what it is not drag in other things

(its why before starting mine I wrote up general excepted rules for robots in this mod for when people showcase, etc)

if your mod isnt based over realism rules then we enjoy making uber powerful robots with less restrictions :-D

Ahh. Well, this is a bit different than what I've expected. I'm glad that some like both realms of gameplay.

Later on today I'll show some more progress on this. Then I'll work on it and probably not come back until next week.

I had a look at the mod yeterday. It looked nice, the custom compenets and UI were very nicely done, but I must ask, how did you get the BBEANS prestacked Black and the Nifty with CB space under it? I tought that only the winner of BBEANS could choose one of those?

Yeah. I downloaded BBEANS a while back and checked it out. I almost forgot about those stacked batteries.

I am working on the UI again, and I ought to have pictures up soon, as well as some changes to the arenas and the AI. One thing that's hurting me in the AI is that Beta (one of the DSL replicas) doesn't like to move when its weapons are firing while it's being counted out. Frenzy is very similar to whipper, so I'll take a look at Whipperplus, since Whipperplus has some sort of code that apparently helps this issue.

Eh... I guess I never did take a look at the cheat parts in BBEANS pack.

Well, good luck with that mod of yours. It looks fun but unfortumnately Ihave lost intrest in building robots. This does mean that I will not make a bot for my Amazing Rage tournament. Wich still has one open spot left for the minimun im expecting.

Ahh. Well, thank you. I've basically lost interest in Stock, but DSL and custom bots still interest me. Particularly the HW and SHW classes, but I'm somehow building decently into the Lightweight class in custom and I've yet to build much more other than the Lightweight that I had earlier in DSL.

I'm sure that my interest in DSL will overflow when DSL 3 comes out.

Edit - Check out the first page. It has some screenshots of the newer UI build. I'm only going to make incremental changes and this may take awhile before the final release. I am also putting some of the components that are illegal into the cheatbot2 components list. Now I am not allowing special mobility components (hovercraft, magnets, bumble bee configuration, etc).

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q09MODGA - Password is "hecken" without quotes.

video just in case you haven't seen it -

Next week, I will have a new version. The new version replaces some of the modified bots such as the modified SCRAMJET and PlayMaker with two new ones. I also replaced the replicas with new bots.
