THBQ's showcase
« on: January 19, 2016, 11:09:14 PM »
I figured why not make a showcase of ironforge

bindi, a landmine in summer for anyone who lives in Australia.
has many pingage problems but can beat most of the stock AI in the middleweight class (Titanium 5)

that's because its a heavyweight ;P
ironforge weightclasses are a little weird, MW is 200kg and HW is 400kg, not counting ballasts. unfortunately we are unable to reprogram the game to change the weightclasses, so the best we can do is just remember what the weights are.

it's not a bad bot. you're on the right track. I'd recommend using a weaker weapon motor to save weight (you don't need a very powerful one on a shell spinner) and use stronger motors for the drive. Your batteries are technically fine, but you may want to use a car battery in there + another battery to get it up to 30 amps, it will last much longer than these energizer ones.

The main thing you probably want to work on though is your weapon placement. combinations of different weapon types and sizes is hard to do effectively in RA2, especially in the ironforge mod. in Ironforge, the weapons generally only do damage on the sharp parts, and it usually tells you this in the component descriptions in game. You've lined up all your weapons correctly except the iron spikes, which only do damage on the tip meaning they are not being utilized in this setup. while the crushing teeth are facing the right way, their placement here means they will generally not hit the opponent since they are not as long as the knives beneath. the knives are really the only things doing damage right now, meaning half of your entire weapon setup is not being utilized. It's very easy to fix though, just find some uniform weapons and try to use them all along the shell.
also try to post what armor type and thickness the robot has, it helps us a lot. You also probably want to rename your showcase something like "THBQ's showcase" to avoid confusion.

good first bot man, and welcome to the forums. I'll be glad to see what else you come up with :)

Beatdown, a heavyweight drum robot with protected drive and metagame razors (I built this in a rush and it isnt very good)

hey, it's not bad. you can make it a lot better with some simple tweaks.

note that 400kg is the limit for an ironforge HW, yours is 60kg over the limit. you want to bring that down. you are able to use up to 4 ballasts and not have it count against your weight limit though, most people generally use them for stability and such but you don't have to use them at all.

I think your main downfall here is the width of the robot. I would make it a lot wider. how you do that is up to you. your side armor is a good idea, but it could be improved a bit. this will let you get a wider weapon, which means its easier to connect with an opponent, and also makes the robot turn faster.
the razor tips are cool but don't really do much and will likely not damage the opponent much (they also have very low HP, it shows the values in the item descriptions in-game). The DSL bars are fine, but you may want to look into dark armor sheets for the sides, they are very strong and pretty light. snowplows may also work.
its hard to tell how the wedges are attached, but if they are on a static anchor you want to put them on a skirt hinge. static wedge setups are vastly inferior to wedges on burst motors/hinges.

I also highly encourage you to make this robot invertible.

keep up the good work man.

Pretty good for your 2nd bot. I don't think the 2 wheels at the front are doing much, I would remove them. if the bot is too slow, wider wheels or more powerful drive motors would probably work better. Mixing drive motors probably isnt a great idea.

Also, everything Reier said. All good advice.
