I got some advice from Sierra the other day. It wasn't the best advice:

Step 1: You buy an alarm clock from the store, and then you have to break it and put it in the sauce.

I've got all updates installed for windows XP SP3, and all updates up to date, specifically, which updates should I remove?

Back up and Re-install is my best advice to you. I have gone through 6 re installations on my computer alone :P
No wait, RA2 puts files in the registry, it might be corrupted. Try doing a reg. cleanup.

Delete RA2 after backing up bots(EVERY COPY) and try again.

Hmm. Sounds like a good idea. How would I do that on Windows XP SP3/SP2 (cba to find which one my compy is right now, on my grandma's computer)?

do a system restore. If you had the same problem I had this works as long as you do it from before the game started not working.

Anyway I think all you can do by now is not run it off an external hard drive...

What about

1. Disconnect external hard drive
2. Uninstall and reinstall RA2 on computer
3. ???
4. PROFIT

Or close all windows and running applications, then start RA2. Or start it, use either the Windows button, Ctrl+Alt+Del, or Alt+Tab to switch out, then go back.

Just throwing stuff out there...
