Installing RA2 with mods
« on: July 17, 2015, 05:28:43 PM »
I've been trying to figure out why RA2 with DSL2.1 and Ironforge keeps crashing. Its not mentioned anywhere but I think I am coming to the realization that you cannot use DSL2.1 mod and iron forge at the same time? The way I read the stickied install thread was that I needed to unzip RA2, then unzip and copy all the mod files to the same folders overwriting old ones. But the more I think about it doesnt make sense that would work. So does everyone here play DSL2.1 separate of Ironforge? I was thinking oh yeah stock game with all its components plus ill install these mods to get even more components to build with blah blah. can you transfer bots from one mod to another?

I can't see why you couldn't have Ironforge and DSL components in the same game for your own personal enjoyment, but the two mods are not cross compatible. As such, we would usually have a separate install for Ironforge and for DSL, yes.

You can put stock bots into DSL and they will work fine, but no other way round for the three mods will work.
My above post explains everything about everything.

DSL and Ironforge are total conversion mods and therefore aren't cross compatible with each other or stock RA2, as GK pointed out.
It's like the original Counter Strike to Half-Life. Counter-Strike was built from Half-Life but you can't mix them together.
You'll find a lot of people here have many copies of the game for each variant they have.

EDIT: My RA2 folder. Arrows next to each full RA2 installation (The tournaments folder has a bunch of half-copies that I've kept around in case I need the AI.

The online play of RA2 doesn't work anymore (GameSpy doesn't exist). You can play online using a LAN simulator (I guess you can call them that?) like Hamachi or Gameranger, but the lag is unbearable unless you're playing over real LAN, like a cable.
We have AI tournaments here where you can submit your exported bots to be AIed (run by the game) and fought in tournaments for all to watch.

Im playing just Ironforge fresh copy, on desktop, windows 7 64, without compatibility mode. I have tried running as admin and just normal launching. It keeps crashing randomly during fights.

Before installing it would be well advised that you create a copy, one for Stock, and the copy for mods. Should anything go wrong with the installation you can always copy and try again.

so I took DSL 2.1, merged stock RA2 components folder and ironforge components folders into DSL components folders. for file discrepancies: I did not replace same name files. Now I have alot more batterys and motors in my DSL 2.1 :P

Only thing to ensure you know is that means bots won't really be able to be showcased here or used in tournaments, as everything is mixed and unbalanced. Other than that, enjoy. :)
