What are some decent Medic and Scout weapons?  Scout seems pretty worthles with the stock weapons, and as Medic, I can barely defend myself.  Also what's a fair trade for said weapons?  I don't have much, but what I do have has proven pretty useless, so I've got stuff to offer.

I also have a crate that I can't be arsed to spend $2 to open, what's a fair trade for either selling the crate or getting a key?

You can't trade unless you've bought something from the Mann Co. Store.

Scout's primary is by far the best. The rest are either subpar or a bit more situational. The pistol though can be swapped for a better utility like Mad Milk, and pretty much all of the bat's alternatives are better.

as Medic, I can barely defend myself.
This usually has more to do with your playing style rather than your weapons, as you pretty much have to rely on your buddies to be your meat shields. The Overdose is an upgrade over the stock when you need to escape from a sticky situation though, and the Solemn Vow helps you check if there are disguised Spies around.

As for the trading thing, pretty much all the crates are useless (save for the salvaged ones, which I would recommend to spend some bucks to unlock as you would always turn up a profit), so you can either delete it or let it gather dust in your backpack. Also each regular weapon is worth around a scrap or 2 weapons, although some users specifically gear their trades to beginners and can do 1:1 weapon trades.
Clash Cubes 1 - Grey Matter (Runner-Up)
King of Karnage - Sideshow Freak (Runner-Up, Best Engineered)
Rust In Pieces - Paper Cut 3 (Grand Champion, Most Dangerous Bot)
Wheely Tag Tournament - Ion Thruster (Grand Champion, along with Ounces' DiSemboweLment)
UK vs USA - Dark Striker (Grand Champion)
Rust In Pieces 2 - Claymore (Runner-Up, Favourite Bot)
BBEANS 6 - Infection 4 (Runner-Up)
RA2 Team Championships - Serious Business, Skeksis (Runner-Up, along with Scrappy, S_M, and Badnik)
RA2 Team Championships 2 - The Other Stig (Runner-Up, along with Scrappy, S_M, Badnik, 090901, and R1885)
Replica Wars 3 - Abaddon (Runner-Up, Luckiest Bot)
BroBots - wheebot & yaybot (Runner-Up)
Robo Zone 2 - Dipper (4th place, Survival Champion, & Best Axle Bot)
ARBBC - The Covenant (3rd place, BW Rumble Winner, Most Feared BW)

I haven't bought anything, and yet, I distinctly remember someone opening the trade menu and giving me a hat at some point (unless it is a more recent change).
Yes that sequence of words I just said made perfect sense.

Chaos, you have Proof of Purchase. Those who bought TF2 before the F2P era, can trade normally.

What does that mean exactly, "each weapon is worth around 2 weapons?"

If you want to buy a weapon, you have to give 2 weapons for it.

Are those 50 cent bundles from the Mann co store worth it?  It's starting to seem like I need to buy them to stay competitive, which I guess is the purpose of offering them.

It's worth buying 1 just so you can trade in-game, then people like me who have duplicates and don't care a huge amount about moneys can give you weapons. :3

I recommend to buy only keys from the store... They are worth 2 Refined & 2 Reclaimed metal. Best way to get weapons is by scrapbanking (Trade partner gives you 2 random weapons, and you give him 1 scrap)

No, I think that these are the best things to buy if you wanna go premium:
1.2 keys/white paint
2.5 name tags/Tour of Duty tickets

Edit:
Opss, almost forgot, here's a newbie trading guide from the steam forums:

Is the standard Medigun or the Quick Fix better? I like the Quick Fix because it charges and heals faster, but other seem to disagree.

I only tend to use the Medigun - if you have a lot of members that need healing on your team the Quick Fix is useful.. but the Ubercharge isn't half as effective and you get no overheal on it either.

I use the standard Medigun myself. Of course it takes a bit longer, but I find it's better in the long run with the Overhealing and better Ubercharge you get from it.

I've recently duscovered the joy of watching other people rage.  I thought it would be upsetting to have people getting cursing/yelling, but it's actually quite a good laugh.  There was a guy getting pissed at a noob (by which I mean a slower adapter than I) about stuff like there being too many Spies or Snipers, and how everyone who used to play CoD only chooses those classes.

Also, how do I friend invite someone who's on the server with me?  I was trying to figure it out but they logged off before I could.

I can't remember if you can from the server itself but in Steam, if you go View>Players it gives you a list of all the people you've played with recently :D
