Recommend a Game Thread
« on: June 05, 2010, 01:03:40 PM »
This thread is for writing little "articles" (or whatever you want to call it) about games that you would recommend to others.

Example (and one of mine)

Retro Game Challenge
Console: DS

Based off the Japanese TV show Game Center CX, this game takes you back to the 8 bit era of gaming. There are 8 fake Famicom (NES) games, like shooters, racing games, and platformers, with different challenges to complete, (like beat level four without dying, or complete track 2 in less than 2:09). To complete these challenges, there are in-game magazines that can be read to learn tricks and tips. They also add a bit of humor, poking fun at games from the time. A sequel is already released in Japan, taking place in the 16-bit era. It will most likely not make it out of Japan. The perfect title for any retro game fan!

Pokemon Heart Gold/SoulSilver
Console: DS

Based off of the old games for the GameBoy Colour. This is a must buy for any serious Pokemon gamer. It brings the magic of the DS to the old games and gives them a new life. They live better than ever with fresh new colours and great, smooth battles. Battle your Rival, Gym Leaders and win the Pokemon League in two regions. Interact with Pokemon; raise them to become a top trainer!

BUMP

Toy Soldiers

Platform: XBLA
Rating: E

If you love tower defense games, and little army men, you'll love this! You take control of either a WWI British or German army in a diorama located in a kid's room.  Waves of enemies come to try to make it into your toybox. To prevent this, you must build up your defenses, with over 50 units are at your disposal, from machine gun turrets to tanks. You can play through the campaign, or fight online via Xbox Live.

Dark Messiah Of Might and Magic

Platform: PC

Dark Messiah is a First person sword RPG. Quite fun, with a variety of puzzles to solve and plenty of enemies to fight, from orcs to cyclops, from the black gaurd to Palkais (degenerate dragons)

Hotel Dusk, Room 215

Platform:
Nintendo DS

A mystery thriller-game set in the 1970's, you play Kyle Hyde, a shady for-hire with a dark and troubling past.  After checking in to the titular establishment, Hyde discovers that this roach motel is crawling with something else entirely: secrets.  The guests are shady, the staff are suspicious, and you've got one night to make sense of everything.

This game covers all the bases of the Interactive Story, with puzzles, items, and plenty of dialogue.  A must-have for fans of the genre, you can easily snag a copy on eBay for less than $20.

For the people who like RTS.

One I would suggest is Earth 2150 Lost souls or any other from its set, different game play those who have played impossible creatures would feel a little at home with the unit creation part. I'll leave you to find more details.

Plat form: PC

Another one I would suggest is Total annihilation, very old game, more than 16 years ago old and if it had bin given the chance would of ranked near star craft "looks at Joeblo" also its still alive hear is the link to its forms http://www.tauniverse.com/

Plat form: PC

Theres 2 of my favs and I got more but don't want to take others ideas.

Is taking one challenge request. First come first serve. I'm a bit rusty now but I'm going to try and crank something out for this. MW and up no glitches DSL or Stock.

It's actually quite possible.  I've seen many critics regard Half Life 2 as one of the top games of all time, second only games like the original Super Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, and PacMan.

True, but seeing it isn't playing it.

I originally got it just so I could get Garry's Mod.  I figured I'd play it very rarely since I normally dislike single-player campaigns.  I gave the game a try, and about 3-4 hours in when I finally had to stop playing to go to bed my opinion had completely changed.

It is VERY worth trying.  Sure, it's old, but it's still awesome.

Oh and if you do feel like giving it a try and get interested in source in general, steer clear of Garry's Mod.  You'll waste more of your life on that game than you would on any other.

Might I make a suggestion that you recommend only games that other people might not know about (like Dark Messiah, I haven't heard of that).  I think most people know about games like Pokemon, Halo, Half-Life, etc. and most people who would want to play them, have.

Now,

Golden Sun/Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Platform: Game Boy Advance
Undoubtedly the best RPG I've played (and I've played several).  It doesn't do anything radical, it doesn't break any new ground, but it does everything an RPG is supposed to do, and it does it excellently.  The graphics are good enough for a DS game (and still better than many!), the story is engaging and involves a few unexpected twists, the dungeon design is brilliant with many cleverly crafted puzzles, the music is memorable and distinctive, it's long and it's challenging (some of the secret bosses are truly diabolical), and there is a plethora of items and abilities to get (you could easily spend a year just trying to acquire all of them).  It even has a multiplayer battle mode, a rarity for RPG's.  The ONLY thing I can think of that could possibly be called a shortcoming is that the game doesn't give players much incentive to play with the class-change system--the default classes seem to work best.  (Or perhaps I just haven't found the right strategies to use.)  But the sheer awesomeness that is 99% of this game overwhelms any possible complaint.  And now is the perfect time to find a copy on eBay or something and play it, with Golden Sun: Dark Dawn scheduled to come out on DS.
(Fun fact: the Golden Sun games are the only RPGs that I have fully played through twice.  If I had more free time I'd even play through a third time.)
(I sound like an advertisement, don't I?)

To lack feeling is to be dead, but to act on every feeling is to be a child.
