JD's DSL Showcase
« on: June 04, 2009, 09:20:58 PM »
Wow... I've been kicking around for a while... and I just got around to installing DSL a few days ago (mainly to participate in clash cubes).

So, anyways, I don't have a decent bot to post yet. I am tinkering and learning first.  What pointers do you want to share with me gtm community?

What batteries are the best? Wheels? etc etc.

Is there a definitive description of the "realistic rule" or is that merely a gentleman's agreement? (or gentlewoman's agreement if we count Barbie) I know that weapons and things cannot pass through items that they normally could not in real life.  But what about actual performance reality?  I notice that some people make popups in DSL but I have a hard time believing that a real life popup would be half as effective as it is in game, so does that make it kinda unrealistic?

Any feedback is appreciated... I would rather hear from you before posting crap bots.

Ant batts and battlepacks are best, for wheels, all of them are good. I usually use Hypnos, Tornado wheels, Vladiator wheels, Taz wheels, Techno Destructos, and WBC wheels.
Avoid the beam and you won't get hit!

Actually, Taz wheels have low grip. And Technos are better than WBCs due to same grip for less weight.

But yeah, you got most of them right.

taz wheels suck.

JD if you want high battery longevity use a good bunch of ant batteries. For total power i prefer battlepacks, but if you have a really large chassis the larger batteries are better - however the 20kg black batts suck.

Also multi extenders are awesome once you have some practice with them.

unlike stock, in DSL if you don't have a wedge, it's much more difficult to create decent bots. spinners are far less effective in DSL than they are in Stock. Skirt hinges are a god send.

and on the realistic stuff. it depends what you're aiming to build, i find, personally, the best bots i've built have been realistic, it's alot easier in DSL to create something effective whilst not breaking the laws of physics, as is the case in stock with 90% of the robots you build, for tournaments it's a great idea, but in actual building, who gives a banana if you've built a good bot, realistic or not, it's still a good bot.

Uhm... Sage, when you get married... asking for permission is the safer thing to do.

But, I will build some bots and post them, just for you!

This is my first effective DSL bot... It is tough to say how effective it is though, because I can't seem to find any SHW bots in DSL (if any exist) This will most likely be my Clash Cubes entry unless I can design something that does more damage.  I will probably work on a HW version of it next... and see how it fares against other HW bots in the pack.

Any feedback is appreciated. I have stuck to the realistic rule as best as I could.  I have not skinned the bot yet... I might tweak it or shoot for a smaller chassis, but it is so stable as-is I really like driving this one.

Edit: 13th warrior has now been renamed Lament Configuration for the clash cubes tourney.  I will post a pic of the skin soon.

not really, cause when you propose, you didn't ask permission to propose, you just did. if they refuse, then you would ask for forgiveness.

1mm Aluminum... I am also working on trying to put a sheet of metal under the bot to protect it, but the extenders go a little too far and hit the ground. Still trying though.

Naryar... what does it remind you of? Did i manage to clone a bot without actually seeing it?

Thanks for the link! Wow, the similarities are uncanny. Well, I suppose when you have built as many bots as Naryar... these duplicates are inevitable.  Sorry if you feel copied Naryar.

I totally understand what Naryar means by this design being unstable. When i first made it, it would not stay on the wheels at all. It would flip over like crazy. After some tweaking... making it 4 wheel drive helped, and adding the tail was the clincher.  Now it sticks to the ground, and simply wont flip over.

What is the best way to test the effectiveness of a SHW bot in DSL?  Are any of the AI bots SHW in this pack at all?

Thanks for your comments... more bots to come.

Not a problem at all if you came with the idea yourself.

...

...well i must say that Monstruosity was, say, "inspired" by Reier's Endentured Slave but nearly no one remembers that one so no one tells i'm cloning... and in a different weight class.

And i think the design is naturally unstable because of the unique spinning disc's reaction. It's just like a one-spinner HS that chassis turns towards left if your spinner accelerates towards the right, but in vertical movement, so the wedges are unbalanced.

it's a pity you do not show more bots, first because your DSL one was noticeable, second because i like the bot you show in your signature's picture : not killer but so well painted .
please show us your Stock ones.

Heh, thanks! The bots in my sig are both from olllllllld contests held on the original RA2 forums.  Neither one is effective at combat.  The Hammer bot on the left was built for a Building contest that ACAMs hosted.  The military themed one on the right is for a bot skinning contest from back then too.  ACAMs had a prebuilt chassis that everyone had to skin.

Thanks for your compliments.  I will do my best to post more soon!
