Because they make the bot non invetible.

Regarding the side armor, it sounds to me like you're not rotating them enough.  I would attach the last flipper segment using the opposite end-AP, then rotate and attach the skirts.  You should be able to get it invertible as well as realistic that way.  If it still goes through the wheels, then axle load the motors and attach the skirts.

Done that, replaced with 120cm poly skirts.
