Naming your bots.
« on: June 29, 2011, 03:31:48 PM »
When you're making a 'bot, is the name of the robot important to you? Or is it a mere afterthought for you? Do you have any themes/traditions when naming your bots?
Most of the time I name my robots after songs, in case you haven't noticed already. And for some reason I usually come up with the name before i've even started making the robot.

Sometimes they're based on the name, sometimes the name describes them, sometimes it's an inside joke

and sometimes it's really really offensive.

I come up with the name after I've built the bot, unless I'm building a bot around a name.

The names of mine are usually silly, like Helifapper

Recently I've taken to naming mine after Exodus songs (Piranha, A Lesson In Violence) or Carcass songs (Buried Dreams).

I normally make up something off the top of my head once I've built the thing. Occasionally I have an idea of what it could be called before I'm finished, but more often than not it's a sort of afterthought.

I tend to think of cool names, typically team-related, before I build, saving them in the form of empty BOT files in the team. I then build them one-by-one.

Come to think of it, I just had a random thought- "Bitter Consolations" would be a good name for a bot.

1. Equations
2. Keyboard mash
3. Literally describe the bot.
4. Songs

I would use #2 but I am afraid i'd close the game and lose the bot in the process.

Sort of controlled like. Fronhild (just did that)
You need to consider vowel locations but don't think about the whole word.

That. Though I name the bots that I thought about before I actually built it...which is rare for me really.

Most of my bot names can actually be described as "placeholder" names. As in, I really can't think of anything better. =D

Sometimes a great name comes up randomly when I'm doing something completely unrelated to Robot Arena or while I'm building the bot. Other times I just look at the bot for a while until a good name strikes. If I can't think of anything, I just put random letters together to make something cool, like Eximoq.

I usually think of a name and a weapon system at the same time, then I build the bot.

Mine usually got their name during the building process.

Like this one I was building for a MW tournament....BEFORE effee glitch, and axle glitch, and all the other glitches that made making a bot like the easy.
