Junkyard Arena
« on: May 27, 2006, 01:31:39 PM »
How about a junkyard arena?  The walls could be piles of junked cars and assorted debris.  The floor could be dirt (grease- and oil-stained, of course). possible hazards could be a pit, falling debris, the car-crusher (like the crusher arena, just on one side), the wrecking crane with a magnet or claw ...

If you really wanted to get into this theme, you could also make a junkyard AI team (kinda like Steelyard Dog), but make them "low-budget" robots using whatever you can find.  I have a RA2 robot i built for fun using all tools for weaponry - the crowbar, car fan blade, baseball bat, tire iron, DeWalt hand drill, screwdriver ... you get the idea, tools that would normally be found in any garage.  And, aptly, i named it Gran'pa's Toolbox.  Yeah, it's full of cheat parts, but since I wasn't planning on really using it for real combat .... I'll see if i can upload a couple of pictures for you guys, along with whatever specs i can remember :)

Yeah, bring back the compressor in a new arena. I love that hazard.

Posted the pics of Gran'Pa's Toolbox in the Robot Showcase - it's the "not-so-stock, but fun anyway ..." post.

I'll hafta u/l more pics of some of my other creatures ... I mean creations - sooner or later.  About half are stock RA2 components, the rest are WAY out there with custom stuff.

One more thought I had on the junkyard arena while I was driving home ...

You know how the garage has all those loose things you can run into? (crates, cinderblocks, cones, etc.)  Why not make some junk and leave it laying around the arena for additional hazards/obstacles?  Maybe stuff like ... I don't know ... car engine block, wheel rim, bucket seat, the welding tanks .. stuff like that.  Just something else to think about ...

How about an arena with garbage all over the floor that makes movement harder and more tedious?

I was figuring not ALL over the floor, just a few scattered obstacles here and there.  But, on the other hand, could be fun having to crawl over stuff to get to your opponent, like combining the mars arena and the obstacle arena.

ur joking right? a combo of those two? most bots don't do well on the mars arena and the obstical course is too laggy and half of it is messed up (ie: fall through "solid" walkway to an imposibal escape...) But I had that idea... somewhere here... look for it in the arena request or ideas thread or uh the dsl 2.0 preveiw topic...

Bump? you havn't learned have you Tygron? I learned not to bump topics like a month after I joined a forum. knock it off.

EDIT: Maybe I exagerated a little, it's nearly 2 months old, but still a bump none the less.

Ok so I didn't look at  the date but still it was the top topic that day so technicly not a bump... plus isn't a bump more like when you post in a topic a month or two old and pop it to the top of the page wehen it is ont the 50th or something?

The last post was from may...that's almost 2 months ago...and it was like the 5th or 6th one down (this forum isn't really that active, so, there can be some posts that are months old, but still close to the top.

I'm just advising you not to do that, people can get more pissed at you than I did.

I thought it was ok to bump a thread provided you had something that contributed to the discussion.

Originally my post, I can bump it....

Has anyone figured out how to recreate the compactor in the compressor arena, or is that part of the .exe?  That would be a nice addition to a new arena - I love that obstacle.

I'm going to start playing around with the floor skin for the compressor arena, see if I can add oil-stains, tire marks, generally make the whole floor look dirty.  I'll post a picture or two when I get finished.

Spyguy,
I have hacked into about everything in the game except the .exe. You can relocate hazards from one arena to another through the gmf and its python file.  I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for but I know many things can be done...... ie:
I have relocatd the Flamer torches, the Claws of clawtop arena, and several others objects into new or different arenas.  Move and/or re-sized objects in arenas, made 2-player arenas into 4-player (and put together a couple new hazards working with the gmfs and python files).

But I have found, as was mentioned, if you get to many things going at the same time 'lag' will creep in.

Yet with patience, and with time(which I seem to have so little of) many things can be done.  This is a liitle more than re-skinning, but I'm sure CB, ACAMS, Goose, Dark Rat, etc. will help if you want to try (and I offer to help too, if needed).

Input is appreciated. :)

Play on the new Small Arena and accidentally leave hazards on... it's the same thing, except vertical.

Hmmm..... interesting.  I haven't tried relocating any of the hazards yet (honestly, I haven't even really hacked into the gmf's much, except to fix a few screw-ups with filenames), but that sounds pretty cool, Madiaba.  I have lots of ideas for arenas, but not too much on the patience part to figure out how to build them, I'm afraid - I seem to have more fun reskinning things than actually building them, although I have been studying the notepad way of building components and such.  Maybe one of these days I'll actually get off my duff and try building something from scratch, myself .....  Thanks for your offer of help, though - I appreciate that.

@Click: leave the hazards on in the small arena?  Cool!  I'll hafta try that .....
