Check other people's showcases for ideas.

*tosses Blink a copy of "Getting Your Bot Kicked In RA2 DSL And How To Avoid It - A n00b's Reference Manual"*

Like the man said, check out some of the galleries that builders have posted on - also check the official (and unoffical) forums for ideas at:

I give you two very simple hints.

First. Use maximum armoring. That's the 10mm Steel armoring. That should do enough well...

If that isn't enough for you, then make some external "extra armoring" on your robot. Like adding armored plates around your robot. That should make your robot to last very long.
I was Da beta tester Da da dada DA, Da. And that felt good.

Well first I'd start by trying to beat the replicas (real robots).  The upgraded stock AI are meant to be tougher, for veteran builders.

Also take a look at the new Rookies bots and see how they're built.  No wasted space in the chassis, good armoring, usually some kind of wedge to get under opponents.  Try using some of those same techniques for some killer bots.

Oh yes it can...
Look at the rfsHQ downloads section for an anti-ballast, or make your own. A useful tutorial for doing such: http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/modding.htm
Aye, and if thou hast DSL thou mayst ignore thy instructions for CFZ decompiling, by Jove!
