DSL: OVERLY POWERED REPS AI
« on: July 02, 2011, 02:03:35 PM »
Yes I just did. I am making a new mod. I know to a lot of you you're all going to think this is going to be a disaster but I have to give it a try. Here are some Q's and A's:

Q What will be in the mod?
A This mod will be an AI pack. Basicly I will be replacing ALL the replicas in DSL 2.1 and amping them up. For example, If I were to replace KillDozer, I would put more Killdozer plows and make the bot faster. You get the idea. There also may be new UI and music.

Q Why are you doing this?
A Because I have some other ideas for modding and this will get me started. Also if you noticed the reps in DSL aren't that hard to beat. Any experienced builder can easilly beat the replicas in DSL.

Q Can I help with the mod?
A No. This is a one man mod. Remember, I want to do this by myself so I can get better at modding. Practice makes perfect. Although if I do run into troubles I make ask someone personally. Most likely Craaig

Q You can't AI.
A Thats not a question.

Q Can you AI?
A Yes I can.

Q When will it be done?
AMost likely 1-3 months.

Thats it for Q and A. The mod is already in progress. I will update you when some bots are done.

I would advise you get more experience in RA2 before attempting a mod

Post some proof of progress when starting the thread to show that you're serious or don't bother posting a thread at all. It's annoying how many noobs want to make big AI packs and tournaments and stuff like that without having any experience themselves....

Post some of this so-called "Progress" or this thread gets locked come midnight tonight.

For once the mods did something right

Before you try to make bots better, you should get better at building in general IMO.
I built that big robot on that TV show that time

[troll]Backlash? :trollface [/troll]

But yes I think a post should only be made after it passes the 20% mark.  Alternatively you can also sticky the released mods/ai packs on top.  I just think the stuff that actually is complete enough for download is more relevant than "oh hay I gonna might plan to make something I have no clue".

Put this onto your signature if you were part of this crappy fad in '03.

Indeed- it's beyond me why all these new guys seem to think that they can run before they can walk with things like Tournaments and AI packs, with visions of creating whole new DSL-like mods without even being able to AI.

Hate to be blunt about it Garvin, but I really don't think you're capable of this yet.

(Image removed from quote.)
*headdesk*
where to start
1) Underpowered (Kind of Ironic for this "Overpowered AI" thing going on)
2) Wheels are intersecting each other (Kind of Ironic because that is a "Replica", replicas are considered realistic, yet this isn't)
3) You forgot to read Kill's sticky (The one about too many AI Packs)
4) ??????
5) PROFIT!

Also care to explain how a "replica" of killdozer has 10 wheels when the real one only had 6 wheels?

It is a "Overpowered Unrealistic Realistic Replica that also isn't a Replica and happens to be Underpowered"

"Only experienced builders can easily beat the replicas" is complete blasphemy.  Therefore Garvin must make an AI pack even easier so even he beat them easily.  Ways to do that includes

1.  Not having any weapons
2.  Having enormous open chassis
3.  Having large number of motors but no batteries

This ensures any n00b who uses piglet for drive can still catch up and kill it with a battle axe.

Quoted for truth. Even I, the epitome of DSL fail, consider the reps to be more like toys rather than actual challenges to fight.

Excuse me Garvin, but I think you're missing the point of your own ai pack.

Not so, actually- my comment was in reference to this part-
"Only experienced builders can easily beat the replicas" is complete blasphemy.  Therefore Garvin must make an AI pack even easier so even he beat them easily.

But in retrospect, maybe I should've followed up on the statement a bit more, perhaps stating the sheer pointlessness of this pack when the reps are easy enough already- even without modding, they're still pretty much toys with little fighting capability.

1: Why is there a rule against AI packs? They keep the game alive and allow us to put our bots to the test, as well as seeing new designs in action.

2. The reason the DSL reps are easy to beat are because they were meant to look good, not to be combat effective.

so no, I do not like this. At all.
