DSL = glitchy?
« on: March 17, 2010, 09:12:47 AM »
I'm trying to use DSL for the first time, and I'm working on my second design which failed more than my first.

My first design was a LW drum with a skirt, problem being that with the skirt attached the screen and bot would vibrate/shake like there is no tomorrow while in game, and the skirt would "Disappear" into the floor. I did set the start/finish to the same spot.

Second design is a HW drum, which while testing when the motor starts up and I lightly press a key to turn the robot will "float" onto its side and slowly spin....

Is it really that glitchy?

Thats the LW, it shakes without the drums spinning, no change then are on.

That is the HW, I can full lock turn about 45° before it does it's floaty thing.

Thanks :D

For the LW drum, it vibrates like heck because of the springy skirt hinge. I'm gonna guess that using a metal hinge will also make it vibrate, just to a lesser extent.

As for the HW, I don't know about the 'floaty' thing. XD

the HW is just doing a normal VS thing from excessive force and no stabilizers

youtube the robot Redrum, its a real life robot that does the same thing your describing  ;)

Also just realised that the HW wobbles while stationary with the drums turned off.

Did you make sure both weapons aren't too close to the ground ?

These are rather nice for first DSL bots, also.

I'll remake it with the drum set a little higher. It is close to the ground though, trying to avoid making the chassis too tall.

[Edit] Thanks for the thumbs up too, I'm taking what I've learned from stock with me to DSL.

And this is why drums are difficult to build well...

Hmm, I'll toy with it for a little longer before discarding it. Not sure if the other motors will make me happy for a rumbletumble.

[EDIT] I made the drums smaller so that they have more clearance, still have the same problem, It's "just" like this video.

20 seconds in.

I believe ground clearance has a factor

put on some hypno wheels and see if it improves any ?

Im just thinking as my first stock VS did it a lot at it used N-12's on motors that were base-plate level (high ground clearance

but I have been VS testing in backlash using the small soft compound wheels and I dont ever get the problem that bad

the drum is heavier on one side for a strange reason, look at my BW Dont use hax for a example it wobbles alot as well

I tried smaller wheels, but still had the problem, could it be that the drums are too wide? If they are more inner than the wheels (wheels are further out) would that fix it? o_o

I won't have chance to test it until Friday. Work fail.

It might be skirt hinge AGOD. I had those kind of problems on some bots I've made.
