Title: DSL = glitchy?
Post by: Cougar on March 17, 2010, 09:12:47 AM
I'm trying to use DSL for the first time, and I'm working on my second design which failed more than my first.

My first design was a LW drum with a skirt, problem being that with the skirt attached the screen and bot would vibrate/shake like there is no tomorrow while in game, and the skirt would "Disappear" into the floor. I did set the start/finish to the same spot.

Second design is a HW drum, which while testing when the motor starts up and I lightly press a key to turn the robot will "float" onto its side and slowly spin....

Is it really that glitchy?

Show us some screenies and we could probably solve your problem. :D

Thats the LW, it shakes without the drums spinning, no change then are on.

That is the HW, I can full lock turn about 45° before it does it's floaty thing.

Thanks :D

For the LW drum, it vibrates like heck because of the springy skirt hinge. I'm gonna guess that using a metal hinge will also make it vibrate, just to a lesser extent.

As for the HW, I don't know about the 'floaty' thing. XD

the HW is just doing a normal VS thing from excessive force and no stabilizers

youtube the robot Redrum, its a real life robot that does the same thing your describing  ;)

Also just realised that the HW wobbles while stationary with the drums turned off.

Did you make sure both weapons aren't too close to the ground ?

These are rather nice for first DSL bots, also.

I'll remake it with the drum set a little higher. It is close to the ground though, trying to avoid making the chassis too tall.

[Edit] Thanks for the thumbs up too, I'm taking what I've learned from stock with me to DSL.

And this is why drums are difficult to build well...

Hmm, I'll toy with it for a little longer before discarding it. Not sure if the other motors will make me happy for a rumbletumble.

[EDIT] I made the drums smaller so that they have more clearance, still have the same problem, It's "just" like this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GJ3gTJ_q7w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GJ3gTJ_q7w)

20 seconds in.

...WTF ? Never had that on any of my drums :O
Title: Re: DSL = glitchy?

I believe ground clearance has a factor

put on some hypno wheels and see if it improves any ?
Title: Re: DSL = glitchy?
Post by: Naryar on March 17, 2010, 10:47:50 AM
I bet it would get worse with smaller wheels !
Title: Re: DSL = glitchy?
Post by: JoeBlo on March 17, 2010, 10:51:00 AM
Im just thinking as my first stock VS did it a lot at it used N-12's on motors that were base-plate level (high ground clearance

but I have been VS testing in backlash using the small soft compound wheels and I dont ever get the problem that bad

the drum is heavier on one side for a strange reason, look at my BW Dont use hax for a example it wobbles alot as well

I will test some designs, then get back to TT.=P

I tried smaller wheels, but still had the problem, could it be that the drums are too wide? If they are more inner than the wheels (wheels are further out) would that fix it? o_o

I won't have chance to test it until Friday. Work fail.

It might be skirt hinge AGOD. I had those kind of problems on some bots I've made.

AGOD. 4 hours sleep, partner is playing FFXIII, back to DSL. =D

Drum bot, I will beat you!

Tried another design with the same type of drum.

Exactly the same problem as before, turning causes the bot to float onto the side and fail while the drum is on.

This is one of the cases wherein you need to give your bot a wide stance/side stabilizers in order for it to perform well. Lots of VSes tend to have steering problems as well.

V-plow is going to block your weapons.
Title: Re: DSL = glitchy?

V-plow is going to block your weapons.

The idea is to ram the other bot then turn into it. Silly idea's to be honest. Probably going to give up on the drum... I'll make a showcase topic soon. =]

Your idea is a creative one. Try to put your drives there on a angle so that when you put the wheels on the top tilts in and the bottom tilts out thats what I do for this type of bot.

Post by: Cougar on March 20, 2010, 09:24:20 AM
Hm, I'm having another problem with DSL, when I test a bot I go into events and start one up, on some of them I start a match and non of the AI move, 5 seconds later the game crashes. If I reload the game and continue the event it will crash again, forcing me to forfiet the event.. Common problem? =\

[Edit] Also, why the F*** do my controls keep getting reversed!? I'm grinding down a bot and my controls end up going in reverse.. I'd understand it if I got hit but I'm not, it's doing it randomly. Also happens if I go up a ramp or ontop of another bot... ugh.

As for the event problem,Thats a bug in DSL. NEVER go into a Compressor arena event or Ocean Platform Event.

You can, because JoeBlo released a fix for them. In the downloads section of his site: http://www.robotarena.info/

No, but it's somewhat better than being a beauty therapist, like the school's career's software picked out for me. (It also picked out computer programmer/games designer, something I'm much more interested in.)

Thanks for the download link, fixed the events. =]

I've also come to notice that stacking is extremely easy in DSL, is it allowed or frowned on?

DSL is almost always supposed to be realistic.
Title: Re: DSL = glitchy?
Post by: Cougar on March 27, 2010, 07:06:18 AM
Can someone explain the control problems? I'd be grinding away at an AI, pinning them against a wall and my controls will randomize for 10-15 seconds, as in they will reverese or up will be left, down will be up... It doesn't happen when I get hit, it happens randomly. Starting to "really" annoy me. x.x

Thanks.

Getting the same problem on a LW and MW bot.

I suspect the wheels collicion is hitting a part of the opponent upside-down,Then you get that.

It happens to me when im above a bot :S
I have no idea why...

I suspect the wheels collicion is hitting a part of the opponent upside-down,Then you get that.

???

care to explain that theory in more detail ?

-----------------------------------------

is a small bug in the game that occurs with some robots on slops with a small gradient sometimes get a bit of a reverse control action, Codebreaker did it a lot

I suspect the wheels collicion is hitting a part of the opponent upside-down,Then you get that.

Translation: The top of the wheels are touching the bottom of the other bot.  You try to drive, the wheels get traction on the other bot and your controls go wonky.

I agree with Avalanche here.
